Dumpshock Forums _ General Gaming _ Darksun online PbP?

Posted by: fistandantilus3.0 Jul 21 2007, 06:23 PM

I'm trying to get a Darksun game going online with an old buddy of mine who now lives in Texas. The problem I'm having is that I am not having any luck finding a site to host it on. Wizards.com or what ever doesn't seem to have any boards for it. Also looked at RPG.net , but couldn't find any actual play forums.

We;re on different schedules, he and I , so it would have to be PbP. I was wondering if anyone knows any sites that might be appropriate. Athas.org doesn't have what I need, nor do any of the links on their site.

Have you considered using email instead of a web forum? When I tried my hand at a free-form game I had everyone email their actions to me, and set up Outlook Express to automatically forward people's "posts" to the entire list.

Set up a BBS. If you want to be fancy, use two modems attached to different phone lines and distribute a dialer script that will randomly pick one of the two and then try the other if it gets a busy signal.

You could always try http://ingomonk.bullhonkie.com/forums/index.php ... or http://rpol.net/.

indifferent.gif I have no idea what you just said. Going for effort - lite here. smile.gif

Fortune - the pub works for me, as long as they don't mind having a Darksun game over there.

Ravor - I had thought about email, especially since at this point, it's just a one person game. but I like being able to just scroll up and see everything from before, without having to deal with one massive email.

once SL comes back up, you could host it there. it's got a d20 side, complete with roller. somewhat steep learning curve, but it'd mean i could watch! (hopefully it'll be back up soon, i'm getting the shakes)

Shadowland would be fine too. I've gotten a bit used to it, and he can too. We'll see which one I get some sort of response from first I guess; shadowland or the Pub.

For the context of the game BTW, the character is an elf, that started at 3rd level in Tyr. Classic beginning lv Fighter/Thief.

Of all the most random people to get along, the other players were thri-kreen ,and a half elf! They all played the akwardness very well, especailly since there was a lot of interation with elf tribes.

They were in the north lands, chasing the legends of the so called Last Sea.

The campaing they were in took them through everything in the the north: the Lava Caldera, the Bandit States, Kurn and Eldaarich, The Cliffs and the Swamp, the Kreen Empire, the Kreen invasion, New Kurn and Oronis, the LAst Sea and the Mind Lords, the lost kingdoms of the elves, and a magical left over craetion of Albeorn ElfSlayer, in the form of a near-artifact strength Great Scimitar called ElfBane, and an ork magical creation of Albeorns, appropriately named Gruumish (not quite Gruumsh, but enough to get the point across).

By the "end" of the campaign, it had taken about 3 years of regular playing, and all the characters were around lv 25, which is a huge accomplishment on Darksun. The elf was the only one that hadn't completely lost a character, although he had died a few times. The Thri-kreen had been lsot for a good chunk of the campaing, and the guy who ended with a half - elf went through IIRC three differnet characters.

Everyone ended up moving differnet places, and some end bits of the campaign were never finished.

Shadowland has been gone for a week now. Rpol.net is still going strong though.

Yeah I know. I've got a bit of a "devil I know" syndrome though. I've got an open invitation on the Pub now as well, so it looks like I've got the bases covered. Now I'm just waiting to hear from folks.

Thanks to all.

It is taking a while to propagate. I wonder what's up.

Dude ... don't feel any pressure to use the Pub (besides ... it isn't like I care about a Darksun game nyahnyah.gif). I understand that you have a previous relationship with Shadowland, and you won't ruffle any feathers if you choose to run your game there. smile.gif

Honestly I'm still undecided. I've gotten used to the PbP format, and kinda like it. Even if something is new and shiny and cool, I tend to stick with the old and familiar.

On the fli pside, I like the Shadowland crowd as well. The dice roller is cool, but I'm fine with using real dice. I like the Chat option very much, but getting used to working the site is a pain in the ass. So they both have pros and cons.

'Course, mfb and I are trying to get a Darksun game together with all the old modules, starting with Freedom, and going up to Dragon's Crown, a long series of the original modules that is just all kinds of awesome to be running again. So that'll likely be on Shadowland. Which leaves me with the question of spreading the love and using both sites, both of which I like for their own reasons, or condensing and simplifying.

Well, to be honest, I haven't really seen any 'love' for (or hate, criticism, or indeed even knowledge of the existence of) Darksun at the Pub. Not that I'm a what you would consider a regular anymore, but from what I've seen it has just never come up.

Did you ever think that may be just because they haven't seen it in all it's Dark Greatness?

Posted by: Fortune Jul 23 2007, 04:56 AM

Did you ever think that it may be because the game was ... blah? wink.gif

Posted by: fistandantilus3.0 Jul 23 2007, 05:08 AM

No. Why?

Posted by: Fortune Jul 23 2007, 05:20 AM

Just curious. upsidedown.gif

Curiousity gave the cat Bad Karma. cool.gif
