So, I just got a brand new used copy of Unearthed Arcana from 1st edition AD&D. It says that Dark, Gray and High elves may be cavaliers, but I can't find any level limits, and my google-fu has failed me. Do elves not have any level limits in this class? Or do I just use the level limits for "Fighter", or what?

I remember them being there somewhere. Might be a chart in the back? Something along the lines of being limited to level 12 and lower. Don't take my word on the actual numbers though, as it's been well over 20 years since I've even seen Unearthed Arcana.

Lemme go dig mine out, but I believe it was 12th lv.

I was surpised, but I looked it up and also found no mention of a level limit. SO I dug out one of my old character,s a 1/2 elf paladin (closest thing I could find). He was noted as having U for level advancement. Maybe there is no limit on Cavalier classes, although that little 10 year old scrap of paper is all I have to base this upon, along with a lack of notation elsewhere. Email Gygax I guess. biggrin.gif

According to this http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3239, though the were no restrictions given in UA, there was an article in Dragon expanding on the Elven Cavalier (I remember this, and it's probably where I got the 12 from), and it did have limits.

Thanks, I had no idea where I got '12' from . smile.gif

Remember this lesson kiddos.: Respect your Elders.

Oh and Zhan, props to you man for playing first edition. I'm a huge fan of it, and love the feel of the old game. Nothing says loving like the GrandMaster of Flowers and his Quivering Palm.

A great set of 3.5 edt adventures, with a real good 1st edt feel, is the Rathan Appak: The Dungeon of Graves - adventure module. Freaking hard, and an awesome dungeon, with a distinctly 1st edition feel.

I really loved first edition because the rules were straight forward (sorta) and the lack of customization meant that the focus was a lot more on the characters themselves and the story rather than the next feat or the +2 shocking backstabbing sword of whatever.

(Always wanted me a +5 Backscratcher though. Karma to who ever gets that one, for whatever it's worth).

From the AD&D 1st edition Dungeon Master's Guide ...

QUOTE (DMG)
"It's either a wand of Bigby's Hand spells or a +5 back scratcher."

I figured you'd come through. 3 karma.

Is that a direct quote though? IIRC , it was "It either casts the various bigby's ...."

but that's without looking it up. smile.gif

Yeah, no matter how impressed I may be by the various rpgs released nowadays, I have a soft spot for 1st edition AD&D. "My first love" and all that. I'm also a sucker for Dragon magazine...spent a bunch of $ recently to aquire a lot of back issues (#200-previous). Love "Bazarre of the Bizarre"! BTW, were you able to get those titles you asked me about?

Dunno! I haven't even seen an AD&D (or any kind of D&D) book for over 10 years. It was a 'best guess'. wink.gif

Bizarre was awesome. And no, not yet.

If you have those, then you have the cavalier issue. It'll be somewhere between #70 and #100.

In issue #114, there was a write up on the elven cavalier, but I don't recall any level limits...it was more of a "elves would prefer these weapons and these mounts" kind of thing. I'll have to dig around in the back issues. And the ORIGINAL Anti-Paladin...far superior to the modern day "blackguard". Ugh.

@Fisty: I just checked the site. "H" is nowhere to be found; I guess it sold already. However, the do have two copies of "SSoB", one of which is rated Near Mint.

Hmm ... later than I thought. I know that there is one of the original Cavalier write-ups in or around #72, and figured it would be close to that.

Sooth. There's nothing quite like handing your players an Omelette of the Planes.

What I really miss is the Good Old Days™ when they'd post about half of the articles for their back issues online. Got a four-inch-deep stack of printouts from that somewhere, sitting next to the big collection of back issues I picked up off of eBay.

@Kagetenshi: According to wikipedia, a "Dragon Magazine Archive" was released on CD-ROM, albeit it's now out of print and difficult to find. I think it included the first 250 issues.

Yeah one of my house mates has it lying around somewhere here...

That's awesome. We'd always known there was/should be one, and used them in our games, but we never had any game info for them. And I agree, the Blackguard just blows.

As we age ... the memory .... ah shit ... I forget what it does. Damn it.

That's up there with the Kender Spoon of Turning and the Sword of Underwear Snatching.
