Dumpshock Forums _ General Gaming _ What D&D Character Are You?

Posted by: Wounded Ronin Sep 9 2009, 02:22 AM

Well, I'd have thought this was posted before, but the Search function didn't find anything, so here goes...

I found a "What D&D Character Are You?" website. I like this one the best because it is very long, and has the most interesting questions. I actually thought a bit about some of them. I also am moreso satisfied that the results I got are suitable for myself moreso than with most other similar surveys I've done.

Here's the survey: http://easydamus.com/character.html

It told me that I'm a level 4 Lawful Good Human Monk. Again that's probably as close to me as you're going to get as far as D&D characters go. Actually nowadays I spend more time practicing with firearms than practicing combative sports like kickboxing or judo but I have spent many years as a very enthusiastic combative sport hobbyist. I still haven't totally given up combative sports and I spend quite a lot of time and energy working out so as to stay in the best physical shape I can. I spend hours at the gym three or four times a week and I am currently focusing on circuit training with weights, cardio, and plyo all combined together.

Here's my results

Hey! We're getting some trends here: Goodness and Magic. I wish I could remember which answer was my "evil" one. I wonder how I got 154 Xs for Alignment out of 129 questions. Maybe some answers were in between and gave an X in two categories. [EDIT: And no, I don't think Half-elves are particularly cool.]

It's a perception driven from when I played on a RP server for Neverwinter Nights. Pretty much the entire Bard College was just a front for a prostitution house which every bard member participated in.

Ye gads, too charismatic for a ranger or a rogue. Dexterity could be considered a bit on lowish side.... especially with only 11 strength.

Neutral Good Halfling Ranger/Sorcerer (3rd/2nd Level)

Ability Scores:
Strength- 13
Dexterity- 15
Constitution- 15
Intelligence- 16
Wisdom- 13
Charisma- 15

Alignment:
Neutral Good- A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order. However, neutral good can be a dangerous alignment because it advances mediocrity by limiting the actions of the truly capable.

Race:
Halflings are clever, capable and resourceful survivors. They are notoriously curious and show a daring that many larger people can't match. They can be lured by wealth but tend to spend rather than hoard. They prefer practical clothing and would rather wear a comfortable shirt than jewelry. Halflings stand about 3 feet tall and commonly live to see 150.

Primary Class:
Rangers- Rangers are skilled stalkers and hunters who make their home in the woods. Their martial skill is nearly the equal of the fighter, but they lack the latter's dedication to the craft of fighting. Instead, the ranger focuses his skills and training on a specific enemy a type of creature he bears a vengeful grudge against and hunts above all others. Rangers often accept the role of protector, aiding those who live in or travel through the woods. His skills allow him to move quietly and stick to the shadows, especially in natural settings, and he also has special knowledge of certain types of creatures. Finally, an experienced ranger has such a tie to nature that he can actually draw on natural power to cast divine spells, much as a druid does, and like a druid he is often accompanied by animal companions. A ranger's Wisdom score should be high, as this determines the maximum spell level that he can cast.

Secondary Class:
Sorcerers- Sorcerers are arcane spellcasters who manipulate magic energy with imagination and talent rather than studious discipline. They have no books, no mentors, no theories just raw power that they direct at will. Sorcerers know fewer spells than wizards do and acquire them more slowly, but they can cast individual spells more often and have no need to prepare their incantations ahead of time. Also unlike wizards, sorcerers cannot specialize in a school of magic. Since sorcerers gain their powers without undergoing the years of rigorous study that wizards go through, they have more time to learn fighting skills and are proficient with simple weapons. Charisma is very important for sorcerers; the higher their value in this ability, the higher the spell level they can cast.

More of in the context that, as a lawyer, you take your client as they come and you perform to the best of your abilities to champion for your client. You can't intentionally lose for your client just because you disagree with what they represent/stand for/believe, the flipside is you have to be careful of being overzealous in what you do for them.

Posted by: pbangarth Sep 13 2009, 10:55 PM

Yeah... that's not the sense I got from this guy. Right/wrong, legal/illegal... these distinctions don't matter. Winning matters. Now, to be fair to him, this was his jaundiced and worn-down opinion of his own profession after years of believing in those distinctions.

Why not be a blackguard?

To become chaotic evil I recommend a rigorous expedition to town of approximately 1000 people, with preferably a couple dozen infants. Every night kidnap one infant and sacrifice it to the Chaotic Evil deity of your choice. You commit a chaotic act (by kidnapping the infants) and an evil act (by sacrificing the infants) at the same time! For extra evil points, leave the mutilated infant corpse in a basket, wrapped in a blanket on the doorstep that you had kidnapped it from.

Low HD creatures... Good idea for a bard. I might even win that fight. BoVD nastiness, nipple piercings of excruciating pain? Remember bondage and leather are evil mmkay?

The BoVD always made me remember "sticks and stones will break my bones, but whips and chains excite me."

True Neutral Elf Wizard (3rd Level)

Which is fairly accurate. Though I'd imagine most people from Earth would be true neutral.

Well, I was proposing kidnapping the infants to sacrifice them. It's the kidnapping part that might trip up a bard, so I suggest getting a rogue to help you out. An infant is basically a helpless creature so you can easily perform a coup de grace on it. Even so, I would give an infant 1/4d4 HD.

Leather isn't evil, it's the only acceptable armor for female adventurers. Didn't you know that that make leather armor bikinis for females that provide as much armor as mithril full plate armor? I'm pretty sure the cupsize of the top is used to determine the enhancement bonus of the armor, it's not a 1 for 1 comparison, but it's definitely related.

I Am A: Lawful Good Human Wizard (4th Level)

Ability Scores:
Strength-12
Dexterity-12
Constitution-11
Intelligence-14
Wisdom-12
Charisma-12

Alignment:
Lawful Good: A lawful good character acts as a good person is expected or required to act. He combines a commitment to oppose evil with the discipline to fight relentlessly. He tells the truth, keeps his word, helps those in need, and speaks out against injustice. A lawful good character hates to see the guilty go unpunished. Lawful good is the best alignment you can be because it combines honor and compassion. However, lawful good can be a dangerous alignment because it restricts freedom and criminalizes self-interest.

Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

Lots of magic missiles....

You're the only person that's a high enough wizard to cast fireball and you can only do 1, maybe 2 if your intelligence is high enough.
pbangarth is the only person that's a high enough sorcerer to cast fireball and he'll only get 3, maybe 4 if his charisma is high enough.

Man, will Adarael and myself be able the fling magic missiles.

Adarael can fling 6 magic missiles plus his bonus spells from intelligence and charisma. I can fling 8 magic missiles!

But you know blow-em-up casters. Lot's of fireworks fast, and then we're spent for the night.

Uhhh, you get to inspire the rest of us, by dancing or playing instruments.

At 5th level... let's see, what do you get....

Well, you get to Inspire Courage in us! We get a +1 morale bonus to our saving throws against charms and fear, and a +1 morale bonus on our attack rolls and damage rolls! We get that bonus as long as you perform! That's actually a pretty crappy bonus for a bunch of mages...

I don't know, but the quiz is most decidedly 3rd / 3.5 edition D&D, so we must go by that system.

Also, bards need to make their perform check to influence people with their bardic music ability. I believe many DMs allow Perform (Dance) to work for Bardic music. Don't try to pidgeonhole someone into singing or playing an instrument. frown.gif

Some of my favorite perform skills.
Perform (Dance)
Perform (Spoons)
Perform (Lip Sync)

Yes, sing for us, Chrysalis! Plus, if you throw in a dance number that'll be even better.

According to the d20srd www.d20srd.org, "Every bard spell has a verbal component (singing, reciting, or music)" and with class abilities,

Once per day per bard level, a bard can use his song or poetics to produce magical effects on those around him (usually including himself, if desired). While these abilities fall under the category of bardic music and the descriptions discuss singing or playing instruments, they can all be activated by reciting poetry, chanting, singing lyrical songs, singing melodies, whistling, playing an instrument, or playing an instrument in combination with some spoken performance.

Yes, there is the verbal component, but the effect is partially determined based on your Perform skill. So all you have to do is say some inspiring words while using Perform(Dance) on a pole and you get the effect.

Posted by: Chrysalis Sep 18 2009, 05:40 PM

I don't think the verbal component of watchers count. Or their fapping.

Although a bard with speciality perform (pole dance) would be amusing. But then I would charge the players for their fapping.

No, no, no. You just need to recite poetry while performing the pole dance and you can affect characters with Bardic Music.

QUOTE (Adarael @ Sep 11 2009, 11:41 AM) *
A lot of that is probably based on how they word the questions. I'm very, very legalistic in how I look at societies, but since all the questions were like, "Which is more important, the letter of the law, or the spirit?" and "the spirit" of the law is taken to be Neutral... Well, there you go. Which I find funny, since law, as a profession, is about interpretation and application of the spirit of the law.

Law in D&D is substantially more primal than merely the laws written by man. Order is really a better term for it as that is ultimately what it represents. It is the force behind the fundamental immutable rules of the universe without which nothing could exist. At the same time, it is the antithesis of free will. The most common personifications of Law are the Modrons, machines that lack free will; they merely perform their assigned tasks and keep Mechanus running smoothly.

Interpreting the spirit of the law is itself less orderly and precise. It involves a bit of unpredictability and free will, things that Law does not embrace.

Of course, most lawful beings take a more reasonable approach to it, but the closer any individual is to the extremely of his alignment the less sane he is from a human perspective. Take characters like Vhailor the Mercykiller, the chosen champion of Law , a dude who'd execute a person for jaywalking.
