So, SR3 is coming out mid-November, with the character editor (offering everything bar the story mode rewards) released on Tuesday. This time, the over-the-top action moves to a different city, where the Saints mess with an international syndicate, a gang of luchadores, Hollywood Hackers and high-tech anti-crime unit. This includes jetbikes armed with lasers, VTOL planes, fighting the boss of the hackers in VR, blowing ludicrous amounts of stuff up (even with airstrikes), running naked in the streets, punching people in the crotch and smacking them across the face with large floppy purple dildos.
If you need some pink mohawk action, don't look any further, really.

This game is SO hillariously over the top . .
You fall out a plane, back into the plane, through the plane, back out the plane, killing doods: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=z_64WwS9bnA
Also: SR3 includes Tron: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IbRDARgBaw&feature=relmfu

I wish I had waited for this instead of getting Rage. frown.gif

Everything I see for Saints Row just makes me think "Hey, cool, a Prime Runner Los Angeles Shadowrun game," pretty much. It's gonna be awesome, if you go into it with the right mindset.

Posted by: CanRay Oct 29 2011, 03:54 PM

Especially if you played the first two to find out how you got to be a Prime Runner.

Saints Row 1, you literally start as Joe Schmoe on the street who saw too much... Just random passerby #42. Then the game demonstrates just how much of a monster you really are.

Posted by: Stahlseele Oct 29 2011, 05:52 PM

Never played Saints Row before, but this is just over the top enough for me to consider playing ^^

Posted by: CanRay Oct 29 2011, 06:56 PM

It starts as a GTA-Clone, and cranks the insanity up to 11.

Apparently you're able to jump into cars through the windows, knocking the driver out the other side.

Posted by: Stahlseele Oct 29 2011, 08:49 PM

Well . . . it COULD WORK! . . In Theory . .

Done in the first game. The Vice Kings (Gold Coloured Gang) HQ was a Corporate Skyscraper with a Penthouse Suite.

And now the Third Street Saints are just the Vice Kings wearing Purple. nyahnyah.gif Supported by Ultor. Ultor, exploiting people on Mars ever since we dumped them there. biggrin.gif

Guess what folks? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K97u5usT9WY&feature=relmfu

In addition to showing off the cool toys of S.T.A.G. who obviously take notes from Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D., that trailer gives you an uncredited cameo of Zimos, an old school pimp who used to work for the syndicate before he managed to annoy the DeWynter Sisters a little too much. That little bit of autotune singing in the beginning is his voice, and that scene of a gimp pulling a rickshaw? That's featured in the mission you rescue him.

Posted by: CanRay Oct 31 2011, 11:36 PM

Gimp-powered Rickshaw Chases... Damn... *Writes that down for the Demo Game I'm working on for Shadowrun*

One of the female voices has a Russian accent. Surprisingly, there are only two Balalaikas uploaded to Saintsrow.com. And the worse one is mine.

Is it just me, or is there something funky with the renderer in the "Initiation Station?" It makes skin look like a triangle mosaic, and women appear to have pronounced five o'clock shadow when zoomed out.

There's something funky with your system. If the problem persists after restarting IS, that is - on the first run, some options refused to be switched and after putting a hat on the character, it disappeared. And I mean, the whole character did.

Well, the prevailing theory is that Playa/The Boss in female mode is just a transitioned transexual. There were strong hints of this in one of the few spoken parts of the protagonist in the original Saints Row. It would also explain a "Woman" being in a All Male Prison in Saints Row 2.

And, let's face it, who the *HELL* is going to make fun of the protagonist, considering what (s)he can do?

It wasn't all-male prison. There was a mission where you had to spring the drug-dealing mom out of there in SR2 (IIRC it was a Samedi mission).

Hell - the female voices for the protagonist were uniformly terrible. Playing as Dr Girlfriend the Cockney Sociopath made it all the more enjoyable.

Well, I wasn't bothered, played through the whole game once with the first female voice, wasn't that bad. The "Cockney Sociopath" voice was horrible, though, making me play Sonny Sprockett with a Latino accent.

I just did that myself. Cost me ~1300-1500 USD. Mostly because I wanted to use an ITX board and a really small case. It's maybe slightly larger than a fat PS3 and makes almost no noise because I got an SSD for it instead of an HDD. Was really unnerving at first, since I couldn't tell if it froze or not at times while dicking with it. The price to pay for being able to cold boot Windows 7 in under 10 seconds from pressing the button.

Well, considering that I have a dual-core 2.6 GHz processor, 4 gigs of RAM and brand-spankin' new GTX560, I don't think I need anything more. Although the Chinese have an awesome micronetbook for 600 bucks, so maybe I should save some money for that. Or build myself a new airsoft rifle (I don't own many rifles. Handguns yes, but it's rifles that are more practical).

You don't have to, but there's a good bit of backstory and references to them, as well as the history of knowing how the Third Street Saints became the giants they are. Such as why So-And-So hates the Saints so much, and quite a few names that are spoken about, and, of course, Benjamin King's movie (Based on the book that came out in Saints Row 2.). It starts out as a GTA Clone, and then just ramps up the Pink Mohawk Attitude. There's even a Magician in Saints Row 2! It's like Stilwater/Steelport are on heavy Mana Spikes and there's lots of Adepts around!

It also makes Johnny Gat and the Protagonist (Playa/Boss) feel that much more bad-ass. They're both available on the X-Box Marketplace, Saints Row 2 is available on the PS3 Store, as downloads. Good luck finding a copy of the first Saints Row for PS3 that's in playable condition. I'm thinking of hitting up EB Games to see if I can find Saints Row 2 used in a good condition, as there's DLC out for it that I didn't play (And I want to enjoy the game again.).

Posted by: Seriously Mike Nov 18 2011, 09:29 PM

Hold on. A MAGICIAN? You mean, that creepy-ass Sunshine dude? Considering what you need to off him, I'd rather say he was a pissed-off loa or, worse, a shadow spirit. Although I guess that loa ain't the friendliest of the spirit bunch anyway.

Oh, met the Mayor, and he's THE ONE GUY THE PROTAGONIST DOES NOT TALK SMACK TO! Three games of being a complete and total bad-ass and back-talking ruthless killers, and we find the one guy he won't say shit to if his mouth was full of it!

Posted by: hobgoblin Nov 20 2011, 10:45 PM

Note the unplayability of car chases was a reference to Saints Row 2, not 3. In 3 they did not hire out for the PC version, but developed it in house alongside the console version. Btw, anyone else see a pattern about sub-contracting version of sections of the game and the results turning up sub-par? The much pissed on boss battles in DEHR was also sub-contracted.

Dude . . that's . . kinda not fair O.o

I know! This is what I get for trying to be nice, and leave her some cool video games to buy me, so she's all "I'm the cool wife, I bought my hubby ______ for Christmas." People wonder why I can be dickish sometimes, and it's because I get punished with frustration and misery when I try to do nice things for my own wife! With these kinds of mixed signals, isn't it no wonder that I can get snippy? I could be shouting dragons off mountainsides right now, bat-a-ranging sociopathic thugs, and pimping out a murdermobile, in an assortment of universes, and instead I've got the worst case of videogame blueballs the world's ever seen, because these are games that I know are in my house -- my house! in my name! -- that I'm not allowed to play.

I'm wearing her down, though. We invariably bust out a sort of pre-money barter system in the weeks leading up to Christmas. If I bust out one of her gifts early, we'll likely trade and I'll get to snag one of my games ahead of time (and if I do, it'll be SR3, because I think it's the least likely to absolutely suck me in and keep me from worrying about real life).

So we'll see. Maybe by this time tomorrow...

I forwarded her her email notification about the special 1-year recruitment gig I got her for World of Warcraft (so she gets the swanky new mount, gets Diablo III for free, and gets into the next WoW beta), and then I guilted her into letting me play Saints Row by calling it a trade. Muwahahaha!

So far, I'm diggin' this game. I yoinked a cop car and pimped it out in Saints colors, then thought bigger; snagged a Humvee, instead (turret and all), and pimped it out in Saints colors. Then I just drove around cackling maniacally and menacing the city for, uhh, like three or four hours.

Master the "Bo-Duke-En" yet?

Yup. Just a few hours of casual play last night, only did the first mission or two (got the penthouse suite, then stopped "working"), mostly just romped around murdering people and that sort of thing.

Is there some trick to the "streaking" mini-mission? I've been making progress on several others (driving on two wheels, running over pedestrians, headshots, nutshots, driving the wrong way, etc), but even when I decided to run around butt naked for a while, I didn't receive any time towards that particular goal.

Posted by: CanRay Nov 23 2011, 04:40 PM

That's the one thing I haven't done yet.

You're still in the "Tutorial" missions stage, BTW. The next set of missions opens up the "Mini-Games" like Escort and Snatch and the rest of our favorites from the previous games.

Ah, okay. So just gotta grind away at the main missions a little more, maybe? It's just throwing me off, because other of the mini-game stuff (driving on two wheels, driving the wrong way, power sliding, etc) are tracking progress, but the streaking one just isn't. I don't wanna be running around naked for no reason! It makes me cringe extra every time I wipe out on a motorcycle and go skidding down the road.

And I don't have favorites from previous games, as this is actually my first taste of the series.

Posted by: CanRay Nov 23 2011, 05:39 PM

Then you're going to love this. Especially as you don't *HAVE* to do them unlike the previous games. (Respect wasn't a leveling system, you had to earn it to propel the storyline. It made sense in the first game where you were the new guy that people didn't even know the name of and had to put in work to prove yourself, less sense in the second where you were the damned BOSS.).

Honestly, I miss the FUZZ minigame, where you dressed up as a cop and was filmed doing Saints Row version of COPS. "Hippies are sitting around peacefully. Disperse them. With a chainsaw."

Posted by: hobgoblin Nov 23 2011, 07:46 PM

Just remember that if you want a STAG Condor in your garage, you better grab one early or you will have to go thru the "humanitarian aid, inc" vehicle stealing missions to get the chance at one.

Freaking thing looks like it dropped straight out of a clone wars episode.

Posted by: hobgoblin Nov 23 2011, 10:56 PM

Only problem with the Condor is that is not armored at all...

Posted by: CanRay Nov 23 2011, 11:00 PM

I just love the cockney accent. Played that in Saints Row 2, and it felt so... Over the edge with all the US/Gangsta accents.

Next time I play through, I'll be using the Eastern European Female Voice, I think. Already got one of the pre-made characters from the online site selected and ready to use. Bit skimpy on the clothing, but, hell, they come off quick enough. wink.gif

btw, did anyone else notice a Hackers quote during one of the decker missions?

Posted by: hobgoblin Nov 24 2011, 05:58 AM

Hehe, the more i play it the more it feels like a Shadowrun game.

Managed to make my character impervious to bullets and fire, so i am facing down heavy weapon brutes with impunity. And i maxed out the SMGs with incendiary ammo, so now i am chewing thru vehicles like crazy! Best part was getting a call about mascots gathering outside a store and and going SMG crazy thru wave after wave of costumed hostiles showing up on scooters, in electric cars and even what looked like roofless golf carts. The whole experience was surreal!

Posted by: CanRay Nov 24 2011, 03:24 PM

Posted by: Stahlseele Nov 24 2011, 03:57 PM

Posted by: CanRay Nov 24 2011, 04:01 PM

Sorry, it's why I got rid of CoD: Black Ops.

Posted by: hobgoblin Nov 25 2011, 12:34 AM

No wonder CS did so well while more tactical mods flatlined...

Not that there is much practical use of terrain in SRT (to not confuse it with shadowrun 3rd edition wink.gif)

Get butt naked, and double-tap the down button (The one you can use to take pictures if you've activated it on your cellphone.). That activates the streaking mini-mission. Just after the time ran out on my first try of it, I found a photo op, so one lucky Saints fan got hisself a damned good photo of my Eastern-European Buxom Musclewoman in her birthday suit and ink!

Johnny was the third Saint you meet in the original Saints Row (The first two being Julius, the founder of the gang, and Troy the second in command.).

He was the only member of the Saints to not drop his flag when the Saints fell apart between Saints Row 1 and 2, and your main supporter during Saints Row 2. He's the ranking person in the gang, and only doesn't take command because it's not his style (He enjoys putting in work too much to deal with the rest of the BS that The Boss has to.). Considering the superhuman amount of injuries he's been inflicted with and still gotten back up to kick major ass, he was pretty much assumed to be as unkillable as the Protagonist (Playa/Boss). Having him die so early in SR3 is a major WTF moment that says "Almost anyone can die now.". And hurts all the more when you start shooting mascots of him in Professor Genkis and... Well... The Deckers kick you in the crotch over it as well, I'll put it that way.

It's like Wash getting it in Serenity. Sudden, unexpected, and very, very harsh.

Posted by: hobgoblin Nov 28 2011, 05:02 AM

Then again, i am not much for live action anything these days wobble.gif

Posted by: CanRay Nov 28 2011, 05:09 AM

Johnny Gat is essentially "NPC Protagonist #2" in two games. As tough as your character, as deadly, a one-man army. Take into consideration that he's beating up "Frenchie" with a SWITCHBLADE in his belly, then uses it to cut Boss and Shaundi free, and then kill the pilot with it. And holds off how many people while trying to fly the jet? (Enough to make him go, "Wow, that's a lot of guys!" when he's taken on half a city's police force on his own!).

It's the reason that the Boss is hitting everyone in the crotch. Johnny's death has been a blow to him/her, and it's like losing an arm. The one that usually holds the guns (s)he isn't using at the moment.

EDIT: Also, it forces him to rely more on Pierce. And that's never a good thing. nyahnyah.gif

Posted by: Lindt Nov 29 2011, 04:23 AM

So am I the only one that wondered why Shaundi went from hippie to scary? I mean I understand after the intro, but it seems somewhere we lost the girl whos into mission in SR2 was jumping a Bootlegger off a few ramps and smoking a lot of dope.

And no.... relying on Pierce is never a good thing. Just look at 'Three Way'. I did that mission a dozen times because he kept getting his ass blown up by tanks.

Edit: And just because... my second play threw is a fat English bloke with a green Mohawk and purple suspenders. It never gets old.

Well, she gave up the Hippie Lifestyle to have her own TV Show and a Jetset Lifestyle. Coke would be the likely thing to take.

Also, she probably got tired of all the jokes about her lack of combat ability in SR2 and grew a pair (of steel ovaries) between games.

In addition, survivor's guilt over Johnny. It does weird things to people.

That said... Um, yeah... She's still the Gang Bicycle who is relying upon Ex after Ex, and... Well, play the game and find out.

Continuing my torrid affair with Steam sales, I picked up Saints Row: the Third and all but the most recent DLC (normally $104.83) for $24.99. I'm having much more fun than I did with Grand Theft Auto IV, largely because Saints Row understands how ludicrous the core concept is and embraces the madness, where GTA4 insists on taking everything super-seriously.

Yeah, I had fun blasting the snot outta him, too. It took me a second after I shot him -- because I shoot all mascots, on principle -- to realize he hadn't died. Then it took me a second after that to notice he'd pulled out a launcher and was trying to murder me right back.

Then, the fight really started.

I actually kept shooting him for some time after he died. The reason I was in the Friendly Fire was to buy the level 4 upgrade for my pistols (explosive bullets), so his body kept flying up in the air when I shot it, causing me to think he was still alive.

Well, I have purchased every store, crib, and property on the map (unless others appear later in the campaign), plus various and sundry upgrades, and I still have close to $500,000. Oh, and my hourly income is over $30,000. I'm thinking killing Prof. Genki so early will prove to be a game-breaker.

Until the heavy guns start coming out.

The real fun is in driving a tank through a siege anyhow. Get wanted enough, and they'll even start sending in other tanks against you biggrin.gif

Oh, I've done that already. One of the DLCs adds a Humm-Vee(!), a tank(!!), and a VTOL fighter jet(!!!), all in Saints colors. The VTOL's not accessible until you take the penthouse, with its heliport, but one of the first things I did was go on a tank rampage.

Posted by: Halinn Jul 21 2012, 04:41 PM

The saints tank is quite nice for shooting down helicopters, yes. It is best done if you both get 5 stars from the police and a gang, of course. More mayhem = more fun

The key for "grab human shield" really, really, REALLY needs to be separate from the key for "enter vehicle." Kthx.

At least it isn't the same key as "Cock Punch".

Wait, I thought "Grab Human shield " WAS the "Enter Vehicle" action?smile.gif

I mean, I have to do it twice, but it's great tossing grandma into the face of an oncoming law enforcement officer

Professor Genki's DLC was incredible. There's nothing quite like, once you finish all the missions, driving around in the Genkimobile with Sad Panda, Sexy Kitten, and Angry Tiger.

That's when you know you've made it.

Big pimpin' indeed!

I like the Emu myself. It's a Smart Car, sure, but I always get the idea of it being a Jackrabbit from Shadowrun. wink.gif

A Hammerhead equipped with Nitro and the roof off.... make out all the exhausts and make it so the hood option has the air intake for the engine.... flames spit out everywhere from that mofo.

Well folks, I'm about to crotchpunch a friend in order to get my disc back to play this before Saints Row IV comes out.

Any memories not posted anyone wants to share?

Only that after reading this I should have grabbed it on the Steam summer sale like I almost did.

Strippers. Strippers in angel costumes.

Forgot that my saved games were on the other xbox account, so I started from fresh...and absolutely romper-stompered my way through, hoovering up respect much faster than the cash.

I found that actually going for the cash option was a lot more fun that respect - I mean, I could get tons of that my failing (again) the heli missions while trying to blitz the city - nothing like splattering the various vehicles (and after too much Battlefield 3, the chopper use was soooooo easy) as a twitch response.

Got to level 50 before even getting to the deckers - and unlimited ammo is just gravy

I've been playing through again after having just finished Saints Row 2. Nothing is more fun than running down sidewalks buck assed naked and doing a running melee attack at pedestrians that features them getting a faceful of crotch.

Just got my disc back (After finding out I couldn't DL Saints Row 1 from XBL frown.gif ). Enjoying some time with The Boss until it's time for The President.

That said, made the "Dolly" for Saints Row IV.

I was more than half way through the game... and that's not even counting all the clusters I had collected (over 800, sigh) when, due to many issues compounding over time, I had to format the drive containing Steam. And I didn't move the SR4 save. Now I have to start all over *sigh*. At least I can now co-op the whole game with my friend for the achievement.

Posted by: CanRay Aug 22 2013, 07:57 PM

I need to know someone who has it on X-Box to Co-Op with.

Posted by: StealthSigma Aug 23 2013, 06:55 PM

I need a PC partner to coop with. My SR3 partner didn't get it because reviews looked bad.

Which ones? Only IGN and one other gave it "poor" reviews and they were like 71. Everyone else was 90/100 or 9/10.

I dunno. My coop partner from SR3 said he wasn't getting it because reviews were bad.
