Just in case Shadowrun Returns was not enough goodness for you, something new from the guys who made The Witcher 1+2: http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/05/30/cd-projekt-reds-new-rpg-is-cyberpunk/
Posted by: Grinchy McScrooge May 31 2012, 05:37 PM
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this one. With the amount of depth and complexity in the Witcher series, I have high hopes that CD Project Red can put out a great cyberpunk game. Even better than Deus Ex: Human Revolution and definitely better than that steaming pile of Syndicate.
Posted by: almost normal May 31 2012, 06:15 PM
Probably less in the way of collectible porn cards though.
Posted by: Backgammon Jun 1 2012, 11:11 AM
I'm surprised they are bothering with a PC version, you'd think they'd have learned their lesson. I suppose it's cheap for them as their dev team is more familiar with PC programming. Still, I have to wonder if it's not just out of habit or something. Seems to make dubious business sense.
Posted by: Stahlseele Jun 1 2012, 02:03 PM
Hopefully not a bad shooter like Syndicate . .
If it's a GOOD shooter, i'll be content with it. .

Probably thinking PC Gaming is dead or such.
Posted by: Bigity Jun 1 2012, 06:45 PM
No, it just requires some thought occasionally so not all console games (looking at you, Xbox) do well on the PC. Rightly so, I'm sick of dumbed down controls when developers are lazy sacks when it comes to porting.

CD Project Red are PC developers first, consoles second, so that shouldn't be an issue. The Witcher 2 was their first game on console, ported/customized/optimized after the PC version was done and released.
Posted by: Bigity Jun 1 2012, 07:49 PM
I wasn't a fan of the games, but I would definately agree they were not console ports.

I'm a console gamer myself, but I honestly don't care what the lead platform is, as long as the time and care is taken to properly optimize/customize the ports to each individual system.

Game that won't work on any system on release and no patches to fix it for a week?

And a bland design.
And bad controls that practically force you to play with a game pad or hate it . .
And no customization whatsoever in graphics or anything else . .

Funny that the choose 2020, with no new release in over a decade.
Posted by: Thanee Jun 3 2012, 08:01 PM
Probably because the license was cheap.
Maybe they are fans of the game, too.

Heh, who knows. I ran into a j2me game based on the setting once. Played like a Flashback clone (thanks to the keypad controls i never got past the second corporate cyborg you run into).
Posted by: almost normal Jun 4 2012, 04:15 PM
Man. Flashback, Out of this World, and... There was a third one. LOVED those games.

I have my doubts about this. I don't really care for the Witcher games; they play too much like a hack-n-slash and not enough like an RPG (which the games are advertised as). If they can get out of what they've done with Witcher (I didn't care at all for the main character, too emotionless, so-so voice acting on everyone) then maybe, maybe it'll be good. I'll be cautiously optimistic about this.

You've got to be kidding me. The Witcher is about as RPG as it gets nowadays. What contemporary popular franchise is more RPG-like? Maybe Final Fantasy, in the sense that everyone is to some extent still taking turns in combat?
I mean, unless you're going to say that Jagged Alliance: Back In Action is moreso an RPG than The Witcher, because turns.

Please tell me you're shitting me. It's got a conversation/role-playing system better than pretty damn much any game these days, Mass Effect included, and even if you "fail" a quest (so, you had to talk to a guy named Coleman? And you allowed the elven guerrillas to pick up their weapon shipment before? Whoops.), there's always some way to keep the storyline going.
Turn-based combat? Stats? It's not what makes a RPG.

Yeah, New Vegas is a decent RPG. I can't say a bad thing about Alpha Protocol (Obsidian's spy-fi game) either.

QUOTE (Wounded Ronin @ Jun 5 2012, 09:22 AM)

I have to say I enjoyed Alpha Protocol.
I loved Alpha Protocol as well. I thought it was criminally underrated by reviewers, all because Mass Effect 2 had thrown out skill-influenced aiming in RPG's for just straight FPS shooting. It was great example of what an RPG should be, both story- and action-wise. I was really sad when they announced there'd never be a sequel. I've always wanted a modern spy RPG and Alpha Protocol really delivered. I'm sad to think there may never be another game like it. Here's hoping Cyberpunk can sate that thirst. (I hope it's third-person too, cuz I hate playing from the first-person perspective.)
Posted by: Critias Jun 15 2012, 03:23 AM
I completely agree. It's a game that really got dumped on for no good reason, and a sequel -- had it addressed some of the legit concerns raised about the original -- really could have been something really special.
On the bright side, Alpha Protocol got panned by the critics so badly that it's, at least, generally pretty cheap to find/buy, so it's easy to recommend to friends.

Yes, and it won't let me log in to my youtube account anymore without creating a google account, and to verify the google account it wants a mobile phone number. I hate google. Not even their search engine works properly anymore.
Thanks for the link, that was pretty freaking cool and if it's any indication of the game, it'll be one to look forward to.

So it's the Cyberpunk 2020 computer RPG, brushed off and refit for the year 2077. New company, cool concept art, seem to be familiar with the core material.
Color me intrigued. Good find.

The bit of reading I did over at IGN on this during my morning getting ready for work routine shed some good light on the dev process I think. Direct quote from the managing director ripped off the website.
QUOTE ("Adam Badowski")
“In 2077 as we imagine it, technology will be so advanced that implants will fit in the tip of a needle, making modification easy. The decision to change will therefore be largely aesthetic and ostensibly harmless. Realskin synthetic skin looks real but is better than real. It’s soft, it has pores that subtly release sweat, but it is so much more. It’s amazing, those who adopt it look like pumped, modified dolls, because they are perfect, or some version of it. When people choose modification, they’re making a statement, they’re expressing a preference.”
“When somebody walks around with a chrome hand, it’s not because there’s some underlying technology that makes their hand look like that. It’s because they think chrome hands look cool. When somebody has a leg with servomotors, it’s because they choose to look extreme (like the best new carbon fiber bike). And their choice is completely based on style, it extends and enriches their style. You’ll get access to a rich arsenal of firearms, but if you want to have blades because they look cool, go for it. All these elements will make it into Cyberpunk 2077. 'Style Over Substance' is our core theme, after all.”
The whole statement, especially the bolded bit, made me smile.

The majority of lead Final Fantasy titles have not been turn-based. At least not by default. ATB is not turn based since the player's and enemy's attacks are all happening at the same time without time for independent thought. Final Fantasy X is the notable recent exception to it and used a turn-based combat method.

With this being CD projekt, it's a sure buy. They're basically the bastion of awesome that defies all shitty business practices that the big corps are trying to shove down our throat and give us more then we deserve. Helps that they make good games to.
Edit: Also I think Patrick was refering to the fact that the Witcher got pirated like a gazillion times on PC because they didn't have any DRM, fortunately it also won like every award ever and sold a bazillion copies. Same with GoG, absolutely no DRM, they even allow you to make personal copies in the terms of service and politely asks you to not be a twat sbout it.

at all what to expect, I've missed it; I don't know if it's a FPS, some sort of RPG, a single player, a multi-player, or what. Y'know? Even just some sort of developer interview or sales pitch would be cool, to whet appetites.

she's at least Bi.
QUOTE
we can see her participating in a lesbian cyber-threesome in the original Masamune Shirow’s manga (chapter 3, Junk Jungle). So pornographic that it was cut from the original American release (the second 2004 edition has it unedited).

I suspect Motoko's sexuality is "if it's past the onset of puberty and not yet in the grave, it's fair game" - regardless of gender, or lack thereof.

Cyberpunk 2077 is now my most anticiated game... ever. Ever ever.
Cyberpunk is what's its all about. It's where I started roleplaying. Mike managed to fuck it all up with a 10 year wait for a crap game, but now someone else has the reigns* the proposition is thrilling. I read that they're thinking of re-releasing the pnp to go with it, and writing off v3 as a cybergen style alternate world.
Here's a vid with some pretty good analysis on the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KYSMnMZAhY
Worth a watch if you have 20 minutes.
I'm going to go do this now -->
*and by that I mean when I was reading about it a few weeks ago it sounds like they approached Mike and said. 'We want to use your IP, but this is the world we want. We'd like you to be involved but it's happening like this.' I think that's what he needed tbh

If you're referring to GitS ... eh, mostly it's cultural. IIRC, the age of consent in Japan is 13. So even that scene I referred to, while it would be remarked upon for it's unusual-ness, it wouldn't be as
shocking there, as it is here in the West.

I meant more how people who watched the old GitS movie thought it was all this artsy philosophical stuff about AI, cyberware, etc.
People who looked up his art on the internert found sadomasochistic porn with women who has glistening, oiled plump sausage looking skin.

I know, but it's exciting and frustrating at the same time! I've been waiting for a Cyberpunk PC game since I was 15. The fact that it's being done, and by a reputable company, is frickin' awesome. I just want excitement and speculation.
There have been rumours of a new pnp Cyberpunk 2077 book to tie in with the game. This excites me more than the game itself, nostalgia being what it is.

The best bit, right now available only in Polish: the localization will have an in-game mechanic. So, no translation convention that everybody speaks English, and subtitles for foreign language will depend on the level of your Linguasoft. A similar solution was used in "Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction", where each playable character conveniently knew one NPC faction language, enabling subtitles for conversation in that language (the Technoviking knew Russian, the sniper chick knew Chinese and the marine knew Korean).
