Ahoy, I'm looking for stats on an old piece of cyberware from a 3rd party publication... I think it was an Issue of KAGE that I saw it in many moons ago.

Basically what the cyber did was put some filaments or something in a users fingers that shot out and lodged themselves into a surface (kinda like spider mans hooks) to facilitate better grip for climbing. (presumably without extra bulky gear)

Anyone have the stats on this?

I have that KAGE.

Not with me though.

It basically is monofilament fibers placed in the characters fingers so that they can climb.

I'll dig it out when i get home.

Why not use canon 3rd Edition Climbing Claws which can be found, I believe, in Man & Machine? They should do the same job by being virtualy undetectable with the bare eye and you can even use them as a weapon, if you really wanted to.

I have one small problem with the monofilament fingertip 'grabbers' from that KaGe issue - wouldn't they just cut through the material and make you drop? (Not to mention rip out of your body or snap from carrying your weight)

I'd say do the claws...

but, if you want them anyway I can dig out the magazine.

Snowraven, monofilament does not mean always mean that it's sharp, 100lbs test line for fishing is monofilament.

Installed in the fingertips and the feet, the grapples are monomolecular strands that are barbed and knotted. There are nearly one hundred strands per fingertip, each with a full extension length of four centimeters. The strands are grafted to the skeletal frame of the individual, connecting in essence the wearer's skeleton directly to the injected surface. A command from the brain shoots the strands into anything, thereby allowing the wearer to fasten himself to any surface. The grapplers as stated above can be used to climbe the surface of a vertical object. Speed of assent is equal to the character's strength * 3 meters per combat turn. It should also be noted that if injected into living flesh the monomolecular filaments will destroy single cells in basic curved lines. Ouch... my question is how do they stop it from ripping appart your fingertips in the first place?

I like the spiderman billion hooks idea myself... Myabe we should just create some Bioware to replicate it

I can use with my spidersilk body armor spell you so dislike...

If i recall there were some cool Shotguns, Handguns made for trolls, and ACERS.

ACERS were rigged, powered military grade armor.

I know monofilament isn't always 'sharp' as such (although anything thin enough will still 'cut' things more easily than thicker materials - fishing line being a good example... anything thin enough and durable enough will be 'sharp') - but I guess I didn't explain my scepticism all that well:

If the strands are barbed and hook into the material well enough to support you hanging your body weight from them, how do you remove your hand easily? (if it was just hooks, that's fine - you just lift. But with up to 4 cm long strands (and hundreds of them) you'd think they'd just get tangled and hook into the material at all sorts of angles, making it nigh on impossible to easily pry them loose again.)

Also, how do they attach inside your fingers to be able to hold your weight without ripping out, and how do they slide in and out to prevent from hooking into your own skin...

(That said, there is canon gear that isn't all that feasible either - using nanotechnology and smart materials and 60 years of other technological development, I could possibly argue for the functionality of such monofilament climbing tools...)

Not trying to explain away some of dumb stuff in the books that based in tech level way outside that of Shadowrun, but there are many ways to do this.

If you take two types of material that react to electricity differently, like one expands and the other contracts (or the other just sits there). Once you run current through it, the thing could pop out of your fingers and then curve when more current is poured into it. So the monofilament lines would shove out into the material and then hook, even if they don’t' hook the sideways pressure will keep them in place, much like a plaster wall screw in thingy. This would probably work up to a barrier 4 or 5 substance. Some softer materials would just drop you on your butt. Like rotted concrete or brick, let alone tree bark stripping off.

The rules would need to be updated as well as the description and movement rate of the cyberware. We all know that you can rip just parts of the wall out and leave the rest pretty much undamaged. Not to mention that 400+ cm of monowire (standard type) is going to be quite costly. Let alone the electrically sensitive stuff I mentioned above. Anyone who's ever climbed a peg board or a rope with just their arms will tell you that your average person isn't going to climb at 3m a second (STR*3). Complete that with a dikoted or ceramic tube from the finger and bone reinforcements and you're fine. Climbers are able to hold their weight with the tips of their fingers now.

All in all this would be expensive, limited use, odd looking and probably add one or two dice to grappling test along with a free 2L damage (to your opponent) for said test.

Truthfully anything dealing with monofilament in Shadowrun I disregard.

Be aware that, technically, KA*GE is now owned by WizKids and thus constitutes the Shadowrun IP; posting large portions of it would be in violation of their copyright.

I've considered scanning and posting the contents to ShadowrunRPG.com, but frankly... most of it wasn't that good. Tons of fiction and not a lot of truly interesting stuff. I'll discuss this with Brian and Rob; maybe we could update it for 3rd edition or something.
