Just found this rather interesting. Standing armies employing hired add-ons looks to be a trend which will continue for some time yet.
a large part of why this business is booming is that the military provides high-end training as part of your enlistment. if you get out, they gummint will turn around and offer you competitive pay to do the job the military trained you for, and you get a lot of the perks of being a federal employee. in my unit, there's a contractor who, four years ago, got out of the military from this same unit. he got picked up by DynCorp and got placed here--all without ever having to leave the area.
