By my understanding the only limit on how many powers and Adept or Physical Mage can have is his magic score. Am I mistaken?

The maximum level of a power is Magic. But there is no limit on how many powers an adept may have.

So, they did away with the poorly documented limit of active powers = to magic rating?

That's a relic of SR3, and even in SR3 they fixed it with the errata.
