we have discussed the amount of karma is rewarded.
now the cquestion is how do you decide how the karma is earned?
is it based off old school exp?
based off the usefulness of a certain character?
is it based on the importance to the story the session has?
is it just a flat rate you decide to use?
is it the impact on the world the session had?
is it based on the perceived challenge or the actual challenge?
does everybody in the session get equal karma?
the groups ive been in give a set karma decided when the gm plans the session.

My group uses GM Fiat to decide a flat value, usually based on the difficulty of the run (or the Run So Far) then it goes around the table. Everyone awards 1 karma individually to two people for something that they think was Karma worthy. Could be good role playing, could be a great use of a skill/spell, could have been a comment that made everyone laugh.
Generally people tend to make sure that everyone gets two nods, though it doesn't always come out that way.

In most of our games that use a karma or similar low-number xp style system, our group usually does it this way:
Did you show up (freebie point for just showing up to the game session)?
Did you survive?
Did you accomplish your goal?
Did you roleplay well?
Did you learn anything (the character, not the player)?
Any miscellaneous achievements?
Each question answered yes nets 1 karma/xp, the last one netting anywhere from 1-4 depending on just how awesome the group was.

This is pretty close as to how it is done in our group too.

When i award karma, its on a case-by-case basis. I set a difficulty base karma for the run, and then add karma for additional achievements. For example; taking out half the security single-handed in a single initiative pass due to good planning, managing to inflict 22S against a force 6 spirit with a single gel round, being knocked unconscious and recovering to rejoin the fight on 3 separate occasions over the course of the game etc etc. It generally ends up about 6+ karma each per game, topping at about 10-11 for very difficult runs that they pull off well.

Every group and set of players decides for themselves what's best.
