Dumpshock Forums _ Dumpshock News, Bug Reports, Feature Requests, & Discussion _ Dumpshock 2.0: Dumpshock the upgrade

Posted by: Redjack Jan 29 2008, 03:46 PM

The board software we are running is a out of date and we would like to upgrade the software.
That said, there will be a number of changes coming. The top two that come to mind:
1) The Terms of Service are changing.
2) Our current theme will not import and some changes are coming in look/feel.

I am creating two threads for discussion of these topics. We will post more as required.

Posted by: Konsaki Jan 29 2008, 08:42 PM

Most important question, IMO, is will 'Welcome to the Shadows' be ported over fully?

Posted by: Fortune Jan 29 2008, 10:41 PM

As far as I know, all threads will be ported over in full.

Posted by: Kyoto Kid Jan 30 2008, 01:27 AM

...will links look & work the same?

...What about background skin & text (colour, available fonts, size, etc...)

...Will you still be able to paste in alternate fonts like Cyrillic, Hebrew, "extended" (such as the French "é" German "ü") and symbols like ("€" and "Δ")?

...will Avatars be available or will this feature still be shut down. (never clear on the reason why this was done as so many other forums I'm on allow them).

...and please, will that pesky "(cool.gif" (eight followed by right paren) bug be fixed?

Posted by: Caine Hazen Jan 30 2008, 01:58 AM

I can say this much for sure... Avatars will be enabled, and we are stocking a full library of images for you to chose from. No you may not have your own avatar to upload.

The transfer of all threads should be complete, I'll leave you in suspense, but let you know there is a restructure coming of top level topics.

As explained in the other thread, the only change to links was in the {spolier} tag, it should be much clearer for you all to read.

I'll have to go back and test the others.

IIRC, it would be 6.0 The two previous incarnations as the Deep Resonance Forums count.

Can we submit images to the library, for everyone's usage? I use the Harlequin cover as an avatar on RPG.net, and I think that'd be a very cool one for general use.

We have several hundred images, including stuff from every SR book cover. There's a LOT of options available smile.gif

Once it goes live and you see what is there, if there's something missing I'm sure we'll be more than glad to add it in.

Not sure where Mr. Man got that. We talked about creating some custom board software at one point, but then we realized that the only couple people who had the skills to do so also had zero free time.

We're upgrading to a new version of Invision, the same software we're running now. We're stress testing it a bit and tweaking the options now.

With the size of the posts table, it cannot be ran in automatic mode, it has to be upgraded in manual mode.

We're upgrading to a new version of Invision

Sorry, I was thinking of http://www.mozillazine.org I read (via RSS) that without notice just stopped updating their front page for three months while working on a phpBB 3 upgrade.

It was a frustrating situation.

SOOOOO...is the plan here at Dumpshock still to hold the sub-sites hostage leave the sub-sites in limbo while this forum upgrade of unknowable length continues on to oblivion?

Just...you know...asking...

Posted by: Redjack Jan 31 2008, 12:34 AM

Subsites: We are looking into a timeline explorer, but the code for any remaining, missing subsites is questionable. The http://dumpshock.com was updated last week to only include sites that are up.

Avatars: You are welcome to use any of the several hundred avatars that will be supplied or not use one at all.

Timeline: Adam and I have been discussing this coming Sunday. That is my target date to perform the upgrade.

Funny, but I quite like both the new logo and the new color scheme.

Of course, a little purple would make it much better! biggrin.gif

Posted by: eidolon Jan 31 2008, 03:44 PM

The green was picked to go along with the shift of the core book from blue to green.

Screw that other game. wink.gif

Posted by: Ryu Jan 31 2008, 03:55 PM

Can we have a blue alternative skin? Or grey-metallic? General appearance is fine, I´d just like another colour for the bars.

I´d also prefer the old logo, with adjustment in colour to the rest of course. I´ve got a problem with green/yellow colour perception, I can for example NOT tell if the new logo is yellow/blue or green/blue. I THINK it is green.

Posted by: Redjack Jan 31 2008, 04:54 PM

We will have one theme. The current theme is not compatible with the upgrade. If time presents itself in the future to test alternate themes, that might be an option. At this point in time it is not on anyone's current 'to do' list. There is considerable tweaking required on the themes to get them to work properly.

All in all, it looks.....very similar, and that's probably a good thing.
I have to say, I prefer the current logo to the new logo, but I'm not going to claim that the current logo is perfect and should never be replaced, either.
As for avatars, yeah, I'll probably pick one. I guess.

Hey, at least I stuck with some nice, classy Red on Black. I could have lobbied for Cleveland Browns colors, cause hey, Brown & Orange are obviously a great color scheme... wink.gif

Course Ohio State Grey & Red wouldn't be bad, Those were my old High School football (and baseball, and wrestling) colors.

And to answer the one question, alternate color schemes are a possibility for down the line. However, right now we're more worried about making sure the boards are stable, working properly, and not the first step to machines gaining sentience and taking over the world.

Honestly, for the most part we're not trying to promote the new boards as some "great new thing".

It has been apparent for quite some time though that we needed to do a major upgrade. It's been planned several times, and at one point Mark had started working on creating a customized set of code for us. However, life has it's demands, and a message board just doesn't always rate real high on the list of priorities. So it got pushed back time and again.

At this point, the version of Invision that we're running is gimped. It's something like 5 years out of date, and I don;t even think it's really supported anymore (I'm not really positive on all the intricacies involved with the software license). Things keep breaking, and if we're lucky we can patch them to make it functional (My Controls, for example), but it's not the same as actually fixing them or stabalizing things.

So we went out and bought ourselves a fresh, shiny new license. We stuck with invision because we figured it would be easiest, since most of us know the controls and layout. We're tweaking it a bit to suit the whims and desires of the current moderator crew, as well as updating our mindset a little for 2008 (To give an example, Avatars were vetoed last time around because dial up was still such a common connection method, so loading speeds for our users were a concern. Now, it's not as big an issue)

Really, this is just an upgrade and a minor overhaul. A chance for us to do some cleaning up, toss out some of the accumulated clutter and rearrange the furniture a bit. Maybe paint the walls or something. But at he end of the day, it's still the same house we've been living in for close to a decade now. ork.gif

Any possibility of tagging all the SR4 forum threads with [SR4] or somesuch to differentiate, and in the future ask us to tag our thread with an appropriate version, so as not to confuse others?

Posted by: Fortune Feb 2 2008, 12:55 PM

I feel that SR4 should be the default, being that it is the currently supported, official product, and as such shouldn't need 'tagging'. The onus should be on those that are seeking discussion on editions other than the current one to make that clear in some way.

Posted by: Bull Feb 2 2008, 02:02 PM

Basically, we're combining the SR forums for several reasons. But the two biggest reasons are these:

1) Clean up the forums. One of our goals for this version of Dumshock is that we don't want to have the nested forum set up, like we do now. There's a number of sub forums that get frequently overlooked or simply not used because they're "hidden". And one such concession to this is combining the SR forums, because...

2) The SR3 forum currently gets much less traffic than the SR4 forum. There are fewer threads, much sparser discussion, and a lot of the discussion that does happen there can and does apply to SR4 as much as it does SR3 (or SR2, or SR1 even).

There's a handful of SR3 fans that seem to never read the SR4 forum, and appear to be an awful lot of our members that never venture into the SR3 forum. As such, both sides are losing out on potentially valuable input in their threads. At the end of the day, Shadowrun is Shadowrun, regardless of the edition.

QUOTE (Fortune)
I feel that SR4 should be the default, being that it is the currently supported, official product, and as such shouldn't need 'tagging'. The onus should be on those that are seeking discussion on editions other than the current one to make that clear in some way.

None of the mods have really talked about this much, but I think in general our consensus is that we don't want to enforce tagging. Too much work for us, and for you guys.

However, it is fairly common for a lot of message boards to use tags, and we encourage you guys to.

In general, specifically tagging SR3 threads with a [SR3] in the header seems like the easiest way to go. SR4 is the default Shadowrun setting now, so anything outside of that should be marked appropriately. But I'd think it'd be best if the Edition tags were only used if the thread is very specifically edition oriented (i.e., rules).

<shrug> Like I said, we're not really worrying too much about this. As far as we're concerned, Shadowrun is Shadowrun is Shadowrun.

Ok, the new site is up. The only know issue is that the new "Terms of Service" are not yet posted.

And, if you don't like the Avatars, bitch at me. The selection and creation was largely my doing. I think there's a bit more than 700 of them, at last count.

We seem to have a casualty. Old spoiler tags contents seem to have been lost in the conversion.

Also, the spoiler tags in this new skin work differently

Gang emblems are a great idea -- I'll see about digging those up from the various location sourcebooks and getting them created.

That's not the only thing that seems to have been lost. It appears that the contents of my mailbox has disappeared. Not that I had much, but I don't have backups of a couple of the character sheets that were stored there. (I wonder if I'm alone on this)

Quote possibly the latter. I seemed to be running at a snails pace when I first logged on, but it has sped up considerably since then. Note though that I have notorious connection problems, so I'm probably not the best one to judge these types of things.

What can I say...
when I saw the preview a couple of days ago, I found the "new" look a bit meh. The geen/black-them looked very generic, the green itself felt a bit aggressive and I was a bit worried that it might turn out less readable than the old version.
But I like how it actually turned out! The darker background/brighter font is actually much softer on the eyes (at least on my ancient CRT), the green isn't all that bad, the re-organized structure of the forums makes browsing easier and having avatars is nice for a change.
All in all, it's a nice, subtle improvement.

Pity about all the spoilered posts, though...

Well, one of the "issues" would be that anything in the pre-SR4 forums could be SR3, SR2 or something only marginally related to SR. From what I've seen, SR4 has been almost 100% about SR4, with little fluff otherwise.

So if we tag anything from the "old" SR forums as [SR3], what happens when it's SR2 or not a rules/history discussion, or is something that gaps between all the editions?

Yes, I agree that there could be discussion from any edition, including SR4, and have stated exactly that on numerous occasions when people mistakenly refer to the Shadowrun forum as the SR3 forum. So just tagging the SR4 forum still leaves out some threads for those who seek solely SR4 discussion.

If people in the past have not been clear about what edition they are discussing in the Shadowrun forum, any confusion has usually been rectified by the first few posts.

Note that I suggested nothing of the sort! I put the onus on the poster to indicate in some way that the discussion is focused on an edition other than the current one. I never even mentioned SR3. I also never mentioned 'tagging' anything whatsoever. I think the responsibility should be squarely on the poster's shoulders to make it clear what he or she is talking about.

Personally, I just don't see the problem, and wouldn't waste time worrying about the older threads. Topics come and go, and then come again, and if someone wants to know something, or discuss something, they'll make a new thread. If another poster feels that an older thread holds some relevance, then that poster will link to the older thread.

I guess I am just failing to see it as the big issue that you seem to think it is.

Totally small-potatoes in the grand scheme of things.. but is there any reason I'm basically a "ghost in the machine" and it constantly shows that I've never ever, not even once posted on the boards before? smile.gif As in there's a big gaping hole on the side in my info of posts? Oh, it's not a huge issue, just that we're gonna be seeing lots of people discussing rules for SR3 and SR4 at the same time in the same thread, often tripping each other up with the difference in rules.

Hopefully we start to tag things ourselves, or at least mention it at the beginning of a thread, just to avoid such situations. But if wishes were horses...

That's happened often enough in the past, and has been easily dealt with. In some cases it has even spawned a spin-off thread with its focus on another edition.

Well, that's basically what I am proposing. Seriously though, if people can't be clear about the fact that they are discussing a different edition than the default, currently supported one, then they deserve a little confusion in their lives.

Yeah, unfortunately I work 3rd shift, and usually sleep around 1300 hours (Military time for Grinder! ork.gif ). I stayed up till about 1700 hours or so playing tag with the boards as Redjack uploaded new versions to see if anything was broken on final test run. I think I was getting a bit loopy by that point...

*sigh* I'm getting old. Staying up for 24 hours used to be par for the course, and I didn;t start getting really ired till the 36 hour mark. Now I damn near fall over unconscious if I stay up more than 18 hours.
