I must say, I like the new boards. It's going to take a bit of getting used to, but first impression leaves me pretty impressed. Good job everyone.

Hey, avatars! T'ain't the Eyeball of Ancient, but it'll do. Cool beans.
Posted by: Konsaki Feb 2 2008, 10:30 PM
Well... it's different, that's for sure. I have two questions though:
1 - Why did you chose the bright green for all the post headers and buttons? It burns the eyes and contrasts way too much with the dark background. One thing I really liked about the pre-update board was the fact that the colors were complimentary and easy on the eyes, being brown, dark grey and the like.
2 - What is the subscription thing in the 'My Controls' about?
EDIT: Ok, maybe 3 things. It's a bit harder to do a quick look to see which posts have had new posts in them unlike before. Maybe changin the 'new post' icon to a different color than the same as the 'no new posts' icon would help.
Posted by: nezumi Feb 2 2008, 10:49 PM
Is there anyway to turn off everyone else's avatars and go with a more boring 'text-only' method? Or just to generally make it look less... forumy?
Posted by: Eugene Feb 2 2008, 10:50 PM
Maybe it's just a setting I can't figure out how to change, but I can't distinguish hyperlinked text from regular text unless my cursor is over it.

I disagree. I really like the colors and the contrast (although I still say it could use some purple!

), and I don't find it hard on the eyes at all ... even though I stare at the screen all day and all night.
Posted by: nezumi Feb 2 2008, 11:19 PM
Alright, thank you for the lo-fi board, but why can't I post in that mode??? Isn't that a bit of an oversight?
(Although I do like the ability to turn off everyone else's avatars, while forcing everyone else to see mine!)

Lo-Fi is an 'out of the box' thing. Have to add the checking posting there to my list.

Heh, you guys obviously around way back when we had the Christmas colours. Or the pea/puke green colour scheme.

Having hyperlinks in the same color as normal text is not the best idea.
And I found the old quoting function to be more comfortable.
Posted by: Thanee Feb 3 2008, 01:32 AM
Everything looks so fresh and new... Thanks for the effort!
Must agree on the logo, though, the old one was cooler.
And hyperlinks REALLY need to be another color when inactive!
Even worse, it seems you cannot color them yourself without overwriting the mouse over effect.

McQ, You've got to go into your settings and specifically choose to see peoples avatars (and people of course need to choose them) to have them be seen.
Kinda nice actually, Opt-In instead of Opt-Out for a change.

Go to 'My Controls'
There you can select avatars (Fortune: Gangs are uploaded).
Also, under 'Board Settings' you can choose not to display user avatars, signatures, etc..
Please check your friends and ignored lists.. I thought someone said the upgrade switched theirs...
All in all, given the number of patches it took to upgrade the board.. I'm really amazed we are this functional...

I think you all did a good job.
Wait ... we
had Ignore Lists on the last board?

Did they work? Nobody seemed to use them.
And what exactly does a 'Friends List' do?
Posted by: Thanee Feb 3 2008, 02:27 AM
Yep, overall it seems to run just fine... had to change all my links to my PMs, though, since despite having the same link syntax all the message IDs were different.
Speaking of avatars, will those remain with just the gallery or will you allow custom ones as well?

P.S. is it possible to have two buttons for full and quick edit? Having to select from the menu every time you edit a post could become rather annoying over time...
Also... what is Multiquote supposed to do? It does nothing when I press the button...

Weren't search engines turned away from DSF before because of the CPU usage their spidering caused? Maybe this is why some people have reported it being a little slower since the upgrade.
QUOTE (Fortune @ Feb 2 2008, 09:20 PM)

I used it as an address book.
The new version seems to treat the friends list as more of a social networking thing by publicly listing them in your profile. Also people you add are notified and (depending on how the forum is set up) they might have to approve it.
Which is too bad, because I enjoyed being "secret friends" with people.

Won't lie. Miss the old boards. Course I never posted or registered on the old boards but...
Also, not a big fan of the new logo. However I don't have anything to offer in it's stead so I guess I should just learn to deal with it. I'd probably like it more if it wasn't in that gray box.
Posted by: Kyoto Kid Feb 3 2008, 05:50 AM
..I was surprised how soon this happened. I like the new look although the mixing of both the SR general & SR4 forums was a bit confusing at first.
[on bended knees] Oh please let me import my KK avatar. There are none that fit the Bushido Cowgirl (as I already mentioned) I have requested Squinky to do one so if that is acceptable, I will be happy.

There seems to be an issue when viewing - what I assume are intended to be "recent" posts from the profile screen, due to the Nov 9, 2009 issue that popped up back http://forums.dumpshock.com/index.php?showtopic=6192&b=1&st=0&p=176650, for those of us that posted threads then. Probably a low priority, like the spellchecker (I still have the Shadowrun dat file for this, if wanted).

We went with Green to match the colors used in the SR4 core book. Plus, I think it's kinda sharp looking, and it stands out a bit to say "Hey, these are a new version of forums".
It does take a bit of getting used to, however

I agree here, and I mentioend something about this to Redjack this afternoon while we were testing the boards a bit before they went live. I think it's on his "To Do" list.
QUOTE (Thanee @ Feb 2 2008, 09:27 PM)

Right now, just the gallery ones. However, we have not ruled out the possibility of allowing users to "earn" a custom avatar down the road, through contests or something. But right now, it's not real high on our To Do list.

Multiquote allows you to select multiple messages and reply to all of them at once. However, the "Multiquote" buttons don't change color or anything when selected (They are "highlighted", but it's hard to tell), so it's not obvious that you have them selected.
When you hit Add Reply at the bottem of the page, it will add in all the messages you selected for Multiquote into your reply box as a set of quoted messages. I did that for this reply (Though I goofed and selected the wrong message for RedJack, so I had to do his quote manually).

Hey, just because the google doesn't post often doesn't mean its not a participating member, lay off!
I'm going to send the google a PM to make sure there are no hard feelings...
As an aside, the quote button used to be on the top of posts, I believe. Now it's on the bottom, plus the border between posts isn't blazing purple or anything. I accidentally quoted the wrong person like three times before I figured out what's wrong. Seems like a simple fix for us oldies, although I'll admit I'm not sure if it's worth the time. I'll catch up eventually...
My kneejerk reaction is I miss my security dumpshock. It's pretty standard when deploying a new, replacement system that the first day it has something like 20% support though. The test is how we feel in a few weeks. I'm thinking, since we already seem to have beaten 20%, there won't be a lot of serious complaints...

- You can set up for the forums to automatically launch quick reply's for all you people who want two seperate buttons for quick/full replys.
- I dont like the new spoilers. The old ones saved space, the new ones just mask stuff but still take up space...
- I think there should be a bigger distinction between primary and secondary subject lines. Make the primary subject line bigger text or make the secondary line small, different color.
- The only thread icons I care about on any forum are the ones that clearly show me which threads i have commented on.
- Snapback, topic, and post BB codes don't seem to work. None of them would link back to stuff in the thread i used them in.
- Can we no longer link to other websites in our signatures? I just tried to change the color of my sig and put a | in between the names and it would not allow it talking about unauthorized websites and stuff. (wikispaces)
Those are my only suggestions so far =)
Oh I also wanted to say that i LOVE the color scheme. I love black and green. I think if anyone is having problems with the green being to bright they need to adjust their monitors. Its not that bright. Its kind of bright along the bottom and darker along the top...

...a couple smll things though, the icons on the Text Formatting menu are a bit hard to see, and the "(

OK, found another slight bug. When I went into change the font on my signature, it returned the error Signature too Long. which I find odd as I added the last line last night with no issues.
...Also Firefox Auto Spell Checking seems not to be working.

every single other active poster on the list, Google was not a clickable link, and had no profile or place for me to send a PM. That is what I meant by haunting, because Google was like a ghost ... there but not there.

I've noticed that too. There are no 'post pyramids', because when you click 'Quote', it only quotes the actual text posted by that poster, and not any quoted text contained in the post. A small pain in the butt, but it keeps those half-page quote trees in check. If you use the quote buttons, there is a little button thing right next to the quoted person's name (at the top of the quote) that links back to the original post that you quoted, for those that need further reference.

The log in thing is likely a cookie issue. I had problems when we were testing the boards, and cleaning up my cookies and such from the browser helped.
And I'll talk to Red and borders between posts to the list. I've done that myself already once here, and I've done it on another board that has a similar layout.
It may be related to the skin, though, and if that's the case may be a bitch to fix.

I think it's a feature designed to keep the boards cleaner and, as you say, keep the giant quote trees down. Not really something that generally bothers me, though it can be helpful to have a couple quotes in a single response.

The reason for not using different fonts: with stylesheets, we can easily globally change settings such as font face, size, etc. When more fonts get involved, that gets more difficult, more likely to break, and more likely to look ugly.
[Note: most modern web browsers allow the USER to add their own style sheet to any page, so they can browse with modified settings if they want. So if you actually want to read everything in Comic Sans, you can set that up yourself, without inflicting one of the ugliest typefaces known to man on any other living human being.]

...I always thought that Courier was the ugliest of all fonts (followed closely by New Times Roman). Never had trouble reading CSS myself but again it is an individual taste. Just was looking to add a bit of a personal touch to my posts.

...Well, only here & there to reinforce a point . I would think doing entire posts (outside of the
In the Shadows forum to delineate dialogue, directions, narration etc....) in different colours would be even more bothersome than using a different set font.
Though I still do like the RTF mode, I hope that will remain a feature.
Also let's close the door on the personal Avatar issue for now before it gets out of hand. Didn't mean to create such a stir. It is nice that they even have the option available & was my bad for pressing the issue in the first place.

The only thread icons I care about on any forum are the ones that clearly show me which threads i have commented on.
That's something I thought about as well... the thread icons (hot topic and so on) are a little distracting and too similar to really distinguish at one glance.
I would probably remove the hot topic ones (overwrite with normal ones), since you can see what topics are hot by the number of pages, anyways.
And the Icons for the threads one has posted in do seem a little out of place (what are those supposed to depict?).

Regarding MultiQuote:
Any chance of having the activated multiquote buttons change color? Invert the gradient and darken it a little to it looks like it's punched down, something like that? Even just lightening the color, or having it switch to orange would be neat.
Also, second on the request for some sort of expandable/retractable box, either instead of or in addition to this spoilerbox.:

Posted by: Fortune Feb 4 2008, 11:27 PM

I'm not a huge fan of enabling people to ignore actual posts (automatically anyway), as it can lead to confusion.
Posted by: Cthulhudreams Feb 5 2008, 01:38 AM
It ignores the actual post, but leaves a placeholder that says
"You have ignored this post by Fortune" and gives you the option to unignore him, or view that particular post but not unignore him

As a general rule, no. Adding someone to your ignore list just ignores them -- it doesn't send messages to them or anything, as that would defeat the purpose of the ignore list.

I can't for the life of me remember where I read it, but there have been studies done on how in today's world, with iPods, filters, etc., we're actually creating little "perfect world" microcosms for ourselves, in which we don't have to deal with anything that we find disagreeable, and the effects it may or may not be having. Unfortunately, I only skimmed it, so what I remember is pretty much "it's happening, and it might be a bad thing".

Can we get rid of some of the Sticky threads in the main Shadowrun forum? Like the Duels welcome, the Terms of Service (which are permalinked at the forum top and are no more likely to be read as a sticky than as an option...), and maybe just permalink Shadowrun4.com?
Posted by: eidolon Feb 5 2008, 04:37 PM
I'm all for getting rid of most of the stickies, but as much as people like to gripe when we actually enforce the terms that they're supposed to have known about and agreed to, I doubt that one will be going anywhere.
We'll chat about it and see which ones can go.

I dumped the Duels Sticky.. That was my fault. When I merged the archive forums in, I didn't realize that one was stickied. The Terms of Service link above links to the terms of service post, so in effect it is automatically stickied on every page.

bug: it seems that the icon that shows normal, posted in, hot and hot&posted in threads go back to the old style "folder" when the hot&posted in comes up. so far i have two red folders along all the envelopes...
request: dig up those old forum avatars that was either on shadowrun.com or posted here in the forum at some point. i want the one that had the "acme magic circle paint" can!
other then that, the forum is working for me, colors and all...

Not sure if this has already been brought up, I really dislike the fact that I can't hit a forum and see which posts are new. That was how I mainly viewed the old layout, a couple times a day, I'd look in a forum and view new posts.
Now, the new posts since last visit is multiple pages long (because it covers all forums) and when I view just one forum, I can't tell which threads have new posts and which ones don't. It really sucks.

I think if you "Mark all posts as read" (green bar, righthand side of each forum section, click the "options" pulldown menu), that issue might reslove, though not for today's new posts.
Posted by: Fortune Feb 5 2008, 11:39 PM
I don't really see the problem. When you use the 'View New Posts' feature, each post has its respective forum listed right next to it. It isn't all that hard to skim down and click the links of the threads you are interested in, and skip over those that hold no relevance for you.

...I distinctly remember a Cancel Post/Reply button (or something like that) in the old version when in editing mode and have used it a number of times particularly when I had a bad connection (such as when I would get a "timeout" while submitting a reply) to avoid double posting. I wish I had a screen shot of the old format to look at.

You are correct. There was a Cancel Post button on the post screen that would allow you to return back to the topic without adding your reply. It was not included in this skin and regrettably is a low priority as there is a work around (<back> button).

An interesting note though, you can't delete a post. You can edit it so it says something little like 'this post has been deleted', but once it's there that you put in a post, it seems like removing it would require throwing its simulacrum into a volcano or something.

That would mostly be the rest of us poking RJ for things that bug us, without a word of thanks mind you. And when he complains, with pitiful little whines about things like "sleep" and "family", Adam taunts him with new free books. But these are books much like the carrot on the stick, that he never gets, but keeps working for. And when he asks for help, we telll him that he's doing a great job, and we don't want to get in his way. We also have a loyal DROP bear conspirator near where he lives, with a big stick, incase he tries to get desperate and disconnect his computer or something.
So yeah, the rest of us are workinghard too. We got this 'forced slave labor' thing down pretty well I think.
And to answer the question about fully deleting a post, that isn't a feature a general user (or even a colonel) can do. But the mods are happy to, so you can PM any of us any time. I generally delete any posts with content that is duplicated or say something like "oops" or "double post" as I wander the boards.
And some of Fortune's posts here and there.

So I just got logged out, probably because my router was behaving oddly.
One thing I noticed while logged out: Emoticons don't show up. You get an image source link, but no actual image.
By design or mistake?

Design. Guests do not see avatars, etc.

Did you institute a feature that checks open and closed tags? I just got an error message (correctly) that prevented me from posting, while telling me that my tags didn't tally.

I have found several tweaks and features (meant in the true sense of the word, rather than the Microsoft definition) since we upgraded. The post checking was one I definitely liked. While not perfect, it is a good step forward.

Yeah, it's nice. Might cut down on those edits I have to make to correct my clumsy typing.

Bandwidth conservation, I'm assuming?

Edit: wait, what actually triggers the tag-checker?[/i]
Edit^2: obviously nothing useful

Unmatched 'quote' tags triggered it for me.

...if I find the time today, I'm gonna change it a little and post the icon here. You can use that, then, if you want.

Found some nice free icons to use as a base in the meantime, but didn't find the time to really put something together, yet.

Definitely gonna post some ideas (hopefully) soon (next couple days or so), though.
Bye

But not for me.
Not either way, apparently.

Strange.
Edit: The 'bad quote' above is exactly what gave me an error message (and prevented posting) last time. This time I got no such message, obviously. Maybe the function was disengaged while fixing something else.

How come when I quote a post with a quote in it, I only quote the text from that post, but not the sub-quoted text? That sentence doesn't even make sense.
Okay, so if I were to quote Tanka's post up there, I wouldn't get Redjack's quote from that very same post, just the stuff that Tanka added. No more nested quote of a quote of a quote. Is that a bug or a feature?
Posted by: Fortune Feb 12 2008, 10:35 PM
It's a feature, according to Redjack.
Posted by: Redjack Feb 12 2008, 11:08 PM
Yea, I'm thinking that is a feature more in the 'Microsoft' sense of the word...
Posted by: Fortune Feb 12 2008, 11:22 PM
Meh! I hate Quote Trees, and can usually follow the conversation well enough (and can refer back if I lost track), so it doesn't really bother me.

i must have pushed a wrong button somewhere < = blatant Tron Reference
because now i get this kinda view only when trying to look at threads:

anybody know how to fix it so it goes back to old style postings? x.x . .
Posted by: Moon-Hawk Feb 12 2008, 11:27 PM
Oh, okay. I understand, I just wasn't sure if it was supposed to be like that.
You know what the biggest surprise for me was in the new boards? My own post count.

You are in outline mode. Go to the right side of the top green bar on that page and click on 'Options'.
Second from the bottom is
Standard or
Switch to Standard.

QUOTE (Platinum @ Feb 7 2008, 09:01 PM)

I really don't like sr3 and sr4 forums being combined. People are not tagging their posts, and I wind up reading about a whole bunch of stuff that I don't want to.
The tagging discipline is actually better than I foresaw. Maybe the admins are going through and editing them?
Solutions I have thought to try:
Respond to the thread as though it pertained to the edition you want to read about. When someone says the poster was referring to edition X, or better yet, that it was obvious from "some edition specific language" that the original poster was referring to edition X, act all innocent and reply that you were confused by the omission of any edition tag.
Nag Politely ask the original poster to properly tag his thread. If the thread cannot be tagged after posting by the OP, politely asking will do no real good for that thread, but it will serve as a polite nag for everyone else.

Nag Politely request the admins to edit the thread to include the proper tag.

I do like the concept of having all the editions combined and using the edition tags, but edition tag discipline needs to be observed to make it work.
If there is a good solution, such as mandatory edition tagging to post a new thread, or something else, I am all for hearing about it.

It's, unfortunately, one of the "upgrades" IPB decided to use instead of keeping quote trees.
Granted, there was a way a few versions back to overload the thread and make it load up blank after so many quote tree quotes.
Why they can't just have it check how deep the tree is and automatically prune is beyond me.

Double post, blah blah blah.
Any way to make the navigation links at the top of the page change color on hover? (Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > etc etc)
I'm a stickler for knowing when a link is a link and when text is just text. Not being able to differentiate easily is kind of annoying, to be honest.
Posted by: Telion Feb 14 2008, 07:50 PM
I've also found finding some of the SR3 posts hard to locate, is or will there be any means to filter the board so I can avoid scrolling for posts on a version?
Something where I could filter out SR4 material based on the tags or something of the sort would be beneficial.
