Dumpshock Forums _ Dumpshock News, Bug Reports, Feature Requests, & Discussion _ Poster Titles

I've noticed that we only have three demarcations of poster here at DSF: Targets, Moving Targets, and Running Targets.
I don't wanna be a target forever. biggrin.gif
So here's an alternative progression that I'd like us to use...
Target
Moving Target
Running Target
Shooting Target
Neophyte Runner
Runner
Veteran Runner
Prime Runner
Immortal Elf
Dragon
Great Dragon

Thoughts?

Considering the increasingly fragile nature of the board as it is, I kinda doubt we'll see anything like that. smile.gif Besides, they pretty much gave up on fun titles a loooong time ago. I still miss being a Tasty Human. <kicks an empty can all pathetic-like>

Posted by: Tanka Nov 13 2004, 01:59 AM

Nitpick: IEs are usually better than regular Dragons, and only the best IEs are better than any GD. (Harlequin and Ehran are two of the big ones that come to mind.)

Will you settle for being a Dragon for a little while?

Posted by: Kanada Ten Nov 13 2004, 02:50 AM

I have to admit I like variety in titles, though I dislike the elitism that often accompanies them.

Posted by: Tanka Nov 13 2004, 02:51 AM

Agreed, though I don't think many of us are petty enough to resort to post count for how "right" somebody is.

Bah! Take it off, take it off! I can't get clean! The agony! <falls to his knees in the shower, trying to make it all clean again> Oh wait, this is a completely different type of violation. Rock on.

Can never please you. smile.gif

Posted by: Doctor Funkenstein Nov 13 2004, 03:05 AM

I was just being a dork. Thanks for adding a little spice to the board. smile.gif But like Kanada Ten said, I hope it doesn't lead to post pumping or elitism as it often has in the past.

No.

Right on smile.gif

Posted by: Shadow Nov 15 2004, 09:39 PM

Thanks Admins, I missed the old titles. <points> I am a dragon, all bow down before me!

Posted by: Ecclesiastes Nov 15 2004, 10:00 PM

Suddenly I want the post count from my old account added onto this one...

Posted by: Grey Nov 15 2004, 10:02 PM

Yeah, an extra 3000+ posts.

Posted by: Toptomcat Nov 16 2004, 01:24 AM

Well, then we'd have to start coming up with new titles.
Quite possibly "Sexy Dikoted Ally Spirit." silly.gif

Posted by: Arethusa Nov 16 2004, 01:25 AM

Hm. Am I special?

[edit]

No, baby, I am not special.

No, Sexy Dikoted Ally spirit in the form of a AVS.

Hey Adam (or any admin), any chance we can get the post count to accuratly reflect the number of posts.

Darth Phylos and Hot Wheels hardly have any posts, yet they are in the top ten....

Posted by: Doctor Funkenstein Nov 16 2004, 04:13 AM

Probably because they were heavy posters in the Lounge. Now that it's been deleted, so have those messages, but their post count remains. Just a guess.

Posted by: Shadow Nov 16 2004, 04:25 AM

And A good one, but since they don't show up, nor do they post here anymore, it is unfair that there names desecrate err uh populate the top ten.

It's not deleted, just hidden and locked. One day we will see some of those threads reappear... <Gator Shaman's initiation into the voodoo priesthood!!!>

indifferent.gif this is what I was talking about.

Posted by: Shadow Nov 16 2004, 05:00 AM

Hey now, it isn't elitism. Or at least not the bad kind.

I have come, and have always come to discuss and play Shadowrun here. Not to bash my country or argue why all narcotics should be available to children.

I post 20 or 30 times a day, real posts, about SR and in the games system. I have crawled up from # 50 to number 8. I think that is an acomplishment for a guy with two full time jobs and a wife and baby. Is it Elitism to want just a little bit of recognition for being in the community this long? Maybe, but not the bad kind. As soon as the lounge closed down Phylos and the others stopped posting here. They did not come to play, or discuss SR, they came to abuse people.

Why reward that?

Deleting old posters is absolutely not being considered.

Posted by: Shadow Nov 16 2004, 05:03 AM

Fair enough, guess I will just have to keep posting. Thanks for the quick response Adam.

And eventually you'll pass them up, as will we all. Consider them benchmarks.

QUOTE

Recognition doesn't come from post count or shiny titles.

Yeah, that's the good elitism: "I'm better then them because what I talk about is more important."

Agreed. "Special titles" tend to confer elitism.

Not always, but a lot of the time.

Posted by: Toptomcat Nov 16 2004, 06:34 PM

*blowtorches early appearence of post-title elitism*

QUOTE (Shadow @ Nov 16 2004, 12:00 AM)
Why reward that?

Just to throw my two cents into the ring of mixed metaphors:

It isn't a reward. It is a count of the number of posts they have made. At one time, the board supported two categories of things to talk about; one now remains.

If anything, they are being punished, as what they devoted so much time to is no longer available here. How would you have felt if, not that it would have happened, the Shadowrun section had been deleted and only the Lounge remained with a policy of locking threads that went off onto the subject of Shadowrun for more than a brief tangent? Even if you had the #1 postcount, I bet you wouldn't be feeling rewarded.

As K10 says, we march on. Postcount is neither a reward nor a measure of worth; for me, it is a somewhat incriminating measure of how much time I spend here wink.gif

Hmm, you have a good point Kage, and I hadn't thought about it in those terms. I really wasn't trying to be elitist or mean. To me post count and such is a sign of how long someone has been on. I don't think people on DSF would be so childish as to pad there count by posting in some random thread. Because I don't think they would I see someone with a high post count I tend to give them a little deference and some respect. At least I know they have been around for a while.

Now maybe I am a little prideful, but the majority of my posts are in "Welcome to the Shadows". That tells me that I like playing SR, not that you don't if you aren't the same. It also tells me I have no life smile.gif

Well I do, but I don't have a table top game up here. Anyways, no offense meant, and I appreciate you taking the time to enlighten me.

(Though I still look eagerly to the days when I hit Fortune!)

Weird. Grim Redeemer got to post at least 848 times (that's all the Jive forum Search function could find). I remembered it being a lot less than that. Still, I'm not geekish, I'm just...

Okay, I'm geekish. frown.gif

Posted by: Voran May 24 2006, 11:21 AM

Glad I used search before I asked a question on this nyahnyah.gif Heh 23 pages of posts from me and I'm still a moving target, hehe, course, when I do profile checks on some other people in the 'runner' group and see at least 90 pages, I have to take pause for a moment smile.gif

Posted by: Tanka May 24 2006, 01:18 PM

Yup. Takes a while to move up in ranks.

Posted by: Casazil May 24 2006, 07:00 PM

Well I was known as E.O.T.L.F. but as that was the name of my now dead company I asked to have it changed and the gods smiled down upon me.

As for other names I first applied as Tazazool but due to some annoying BS on roadrunners part they said that Dumpshock was banned due to a spam problem.

I tried to log in to Tazazool but found I could not because I didn't get the first email I guess so I just signed up under another name like 2 days later as Tazazool was now taken.

Now I am Casazil and it is all good as for my title I donated some money got a custom title which is cool and all but status? if you say so I just think it looks cool to have a title that is different.

I have see several people post tons of stuff but as I have been here there are certain names that when I see they posted something I read it cause over the years what they have had to say was interesting.

Yes some of them have high post counts but others don't. A title means nada to me what you say is allot more important so if your know to me as an informative poster I could careless if your title was streetbum or Dunkelzhan weather your post count is 100 or 1,000,000 so long as what you post is worth reading.

Yes I know one persons worthy subject is anothers crap topic as the saying goes you can't please all the people all the time.

Posted by: Toptomcat May 25 2006, 02:27 PM

Hell, I suggested it and I'm still just a Moving Target.

Posted by: emo samurai May 25 2006, 04:03 PM

Posted by: emo samurai Aug 1 2006, 01:52 AM

I was thinking "Named Horror"

Posted by: Kagetenshi Aug 1 2006, 01:54 AM

You do. "Runner".

~J

Posted by: emo samurai Aug 2 2006, 04:11 AM

Not a unique one, though.

Custom titles have been recieved (correct me if I miss any) via:

Donation drives
Writing for FanPro as a freelancer
Adding a lot to the Shadowrun community
Being a Missions coordinator

I think there are more, but I can't place any other ways off the top of my head.

Posted by: Kagetenshi Aug 2 2006, 01:39 PM

Being an admin or moderator.

Posted by: nezumi Aug 2 2006, 02:00 PM

Uh oh...

Donation drives Emo is a college student, so not a lot of money
Being a Missions coordinator Isn't that location based?

So that leaves:
Writing for FanPro as a freelancer
Adding a lot to the Shadowrun community

I fear.

Posted by: the_dunner Aug 2 2006, 04:31 PM

QUOTE (nezumi)
Being a Missions coordinator Isn't that location based?

No, there's just 1 person with this job at a given time. Essentially, the coordinator finds volunteer writers and artists to work on the Shadowrun Missions adventures, coordinates the adventures so that they form some semblance of a plot, edits and lays them out, answers questions sent to the Missions@srrpg.com address, and moderators the Shadowrun Missions forum on dumpshock.

That and Neuron Basher hates donation drives and intends to not do them ever again (as came up during the debate over the advertising when it started).

Edit: too many bashers.

Posted by: emo samurai Aug 2 2006, 07:50 PM

Would submitting a short story that gets put on their website count?

Posted by: Tanka Aug 2 2006, 07:58 PM

That would be up to the admins. I've no clue on their custom title policy.

Posted by: SL James Aug 2 2006, 08:26 PM

It is rather meaningless if everyone has one, or if they're even marginally difficult to get.

Posted by: emo samurai Aug 2 2006, 09:15 PM

How did you get yours? And I disagree; it's something everyone can identify themselves with even if everyone has one.

Posted by: SL James Aug 2 2006, 10:10 PM

That's what a username is for.

Posted by: emo samurai Aug 2 2006, 10:21 PM

I think it'd fit me to be called a "Named Horror," though.

Posted by: Adam Aug 2 2006, 11:23 PM

Good rule of thumb? Don't ask for a title smile.gif

If there's a public oppurtunity for a title, such as a donation drive, we'll let you know. (Which we are not currently doing nor have plans to do one anytime soon, or ever again if we can help it smile.gif)

Other than that... <shrug> There's not really any sort of method. Enjoy being a Target. smile.gif
