I mean I know most people panned the second Matrix movie, but the fight with Neo vs Agent Smith (and Smith, and Smith, etc, etc) was damn cool.

I use that fight scene to explain to idio... I mean, the non-computer savvy how a DDoS attack happens.

As a matter of fact I do. It was good silly fun.

OK, I guess maybe I'll try to carve out the time, after all... I used to love the TV show when I was a LOT younger. The commercials made it look SO bad... but then again the G.I. Joe movie was complete schlock brain candy, too... with some ammusing Shadowrun imagery.

Ooooh, hadn't thought of that one. Most of the people I hang out with are more savvy than that, but I can think of a few times that comparison might have been handy. Thanks!

I worked tech support, I had to explain things to the non-tech savvy often.

Now, if you excuse me, the memories are coming back, and my corner looks so comfortable to curl up in, rock back and forth, and gibber madly.

Tech support isn't JUST limited to explaining to idiots on the phone why their gear is jacked up (usually: did you turn it on? Did you follow the instructions? Then why the *#($ are you CALLING ME!?); the harder part is the IN-HOUSE "customers" who might, I don't know, sign your yearly review or your paystub. 30% of my team is out on disability right now for stress-related problems after Management's last brainstorm. I go back tomorrow, and I hear the fixed part of it in my absence, but I don't hold a lot of hope. In the same time I was out, the OTHER half the department had 25% of their team put in their 2-weeks-notice.

Let's just say my comments about being in the corner curled up and sobbing aren't exactly completely humor in nature, and leave it at that.

@Kerenshara, CanRay and allt hsoe who are tech savvy and work in tech support.

I am your worst nightmare. I am the gum in your hair. I am mustard in your hot pants. I am that piece of meat stuck between your teeth that refuses to be brushed off.

I suffer the computer illiterate flaw IRL, I couldn't care less about DDoS attacks and details like that. Well, I am interested in an academic general sort of way. Not in the least to learn how to avoid them. I'd hire someone like you guys for that... AND gremlins at rating 4 or so.

To illustrate----> As I walk, public lamposts go black. When I touch computers, bad things happen.

One time I was using a friend's computer. Nothing relevant, just some Star Wars: Dark Forces FPS innocent fun. Suddenly, computer screen goes black and refuses to turn on again (Yes I disconnected and reconnected the power, and proceeded to reset, ctrl+alt+del, and all thos etricks, none of them worked). I told my friend, he was puzzled. When I left the room for a glass of water in the kitchen, the computer started working again.

In the kitchen, the lightbulb started to wink out, and something started to burn. Turns out his mother had left the rice pot -plastic one- on top of one of the electric grills. However the power was supposedly off, it turns out it was hot actually and the plastic almost caught fire.

My friends always keep me away from their technological devices.

Chummer, you can log into a BBS and are both literate and have an email account if they allowed you to set up here. You also know how to access it and click a hyper link... and follow simple instructions for pouring urine out of a boot if they're printed on the bottom of the heel.

You are NOT our worst nightmare.

BBS?

And yes that is an honest question. I suppose I know how to do it, since you say I am able to. I just don't know what that means.

Forums? Similar?

But I guess you are right. There's probably worse out there.

BBS = Bulletin Board System, kind of a combination of forum and file sharing site for the dial-up days, pre-Internet.

Forums are sometimes called BBSes by old skool folks like Kerenshara and myself. It's not exactly correct, a rare example of computer techs being inaccurate in statements about computer topics, but it's a sign of the Old Guard.

And, yes, there are a lot worse out there.

Oh, c'mon! Why do we still call them "boards"? And the word "forum" implies a connotation of mature discourse. Really?

Regarding Gait Analysis:
..You mean not everyone changes theirs as the situation calls for it?
For serious- I learned at a young age to adjust the way I walk so that people wouldn't pay attention to me- blending in with a crowd, or in the case of a less populated area, simply making certain I walked as if I knew where I was going and had something to do.

You forgot the part where, apparently years ago, since he mentioned Dark Forces (how I miss thee...) when the monitor blinked out to try both reconnecting power and restarting the computer. That is MILES above the usual PEBKAC problems.

If you like, you're more than welcome to.

In point of face, the character of Kerenshara is Incompetent at Hacking Skill. An old teammate TRIED to teach her and gave up in frustration. If I'd felt Cheesey, I'd have given her the same with Cybercombat. Electronic Warfare she has a little need for using a radio in an adverse environment ("Can you hear me now?") so I let that alone. When she needs some hacking done, she has to rely on a specialist or canned routines (read: Agents).

All the more reason to take "Erased" in my mind. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif)

This is also the rationale that I give for a lot of 'Runners that want to get out of the Shadows to be unable to take the SIN Amnesty was the fact that their DNA/Fingerprints were on file as "Unknown" in open criminal cases.

Erased is only so good. If your a primary suspect in an active investigation you thknk the handling detective is just going to say ohh bummer that data I had on that guy just disappeared I guess I can' solve the case. Or will he just rework it all and back it up to a self contained data storage unit and continue on. Don't think just because you have the erased quality that allows you carte blanch to run amok. After all you're probably not the only person in the world with the erased quality and I'm sure experianced detectives have dealt with the issue before and have protocols to pretect against it when it arises.
