The glasses are being deployed in preparation for the 2014 World cup in Rio de Janiero. Odds are these are the great great grandaddy of something you would most likely expect on just about any Knight Errant or Lone Star Security officer come 2070 |

I've kinda wanted to use this kind of tech in every day life just to augment my poor memory of connecting faces to names I don't commonly use or to make a recording of some pesky kids that won't get off my lawn aka burglars scoping the joint.
And it is our responsibility as Shadowrunners to "fictionally" figure out a way to not get caught by such tech. Any ideas? Masks are the first thing that come to mind, do people dress up for football aka soccer games in Brazil? Face paint and prosthetics with a bit of spirit gum? Messing with the face data base the glasses/camera syncs with? |

Nanopaste Disguise Tubes. They stretch your face ever so slightly as to screw up biometric scans. A dedicated one (Based on bone structure) would get past it, and a (Meta)Human might see past it, but...
At least, that's how I read them. *Rereads* Nope, I'm wrong. But you can use it for something as simple as that easily enough without having to go through rigorous programming if your decker/hacker is taking some time off for his chronic case of steel-jacketed lead poisoning. |

Messing with the face data base the glasses/camera syncs with? In Shadowrun: - Nanopaste Disguise / Latex Masks. - "Breathing Masks". Not the whole gaz mask but something like a small mask with a respirator inside.. With the high pollution levels, it shouldn't be very conspicuous. Plus you can add goggles to that style. - Face paint/nano tatoos: In the Sprawls they should be common. - Big mirrorshade / sunglasses. Add a hoodie for extra concealment though it can start looking like you've got something to hide. - Breast implants. No one's going to look at your face. |

- Breast implants. No one's going to look at your face. Especially if the person getting the implants is obviously a guy. -k |

At least come 2014, I'm guessing this system will have sufficient bugs that things as minor as facial hair and dark shades may upset it. If you want to portray that in SR is up to you. Still, there are some basic measures. Disguise, hackers, concealment (hats! Face away from the camera!) and just looking too inconspicuous for cops to point their glasses at you.

With pollution as it is in most areas I always figured Respirator and Eye protection were very common. After all, you can always throw an AR overlay over top to show what you really look like (or want people to think you look like).
The anime "Eden of the East" has a very interesting implementation of an image recognition system. It operates though your phone, but the core is just a camera, gps, display system that can connect to their server. |

just looking too inconspicuous for cops to point their glasses at you. Won't work. If you are in the frame of the camera, it's gonna pick out your face and compare it to the database. Same goes for the fake breasts- computers aren't distracted by T&A. Obvious solution is to not have your face (or the face the camera sees) in the database. Or even better, to make sure it IS in the database, and flagged as somebody the local security expects to see there and would ignore. |

So you're saying if you're sitting at the stadium bleachers among 500 people, it'll search for each of those individuals?

So you're saying if you're sitting at the stadium bleachers among 500 people, it'll search for each of those individuals? If it gets a high enough definition, and has enough cock-ticks to crunch through everyone, yes. All you need is a bunch of PS3s hooked up together... |

Considering the system in the article is supposed to be able to scan 400 faces a minute, I'd go with yes.

"Supposed to" and "will" are vastly different. This is definitely in the category of "I'll believe it when I see it, and I'll also believe it when it works despite having shades and/or moustaches."
Edit: The article also indicates that if the glasses are searching for a specific target, they can find it up to 12 miles away. I call total bullshit on that. There MUST be some kind of larger camera doing the heavy looking when targets are at a distance, because no glasses are gonna see facial shit at 1 mile, much less *12*. |

Doing some more research, it appears they have some sort of optical zoom system built in. I got a picture of the beta product: Brazilian video shades |

I've had to explain "Supposed to", "Possible", and "Will" to so many idiots that bought into marketing... *Shakes Head*
Even got a nice, cushy job that was the result of "Supposed to". |

They've been trying to run facial recognition software in London's CCTV system since 2002.
Most of the data it compares is around the eyes, so it's foiled most easily though the use of big shades. In SR, glasses and a respirator are enough to keep your face and jawline concealed. Gait analysis is much harder to fool. No matter how you walk, you'll eventually make a pattern. |

Yeah, and how old are the CCTV cameras in London? They're not high-def cameras, and are probably still analog which doesn't help matters much at all.
Gait Analysis helps a bit, yes, but I'm occasionally mistaken for military at times due to my method of walking by "Armchair Generals". (Legit soldiers recognize the origin, but I don't have lockstep down, which tips them off every time.). Military training will change your gait, as well other types of training. Which, in Shadowrun, means that you can probably change the way you move with the right activesoft. Another reason they're handy. EDIT: Another thing that changes gait? Injuries. Wreck your leg badly enough to spend some time at the Street Doc's Nutrient Tank getting it patched up, and you'll walk differently. |

Or change shoes completely. Platform shoes for men, heels or flats for women. Or heels for men as well, who knows how fashions go (Beatle Boots come back?).
(BTW: Heels were originally men's fashion accessories, designed to help with riding horses.). |

I walk very differently than most due to T'ai Chi and other martial arts training, yet most people don't notice, or at least not consciously. Considering how much it can tell you about a person, very few people pay attention to gait. Just one of those things, I guess.

Of course, there's always the old saying, "Watch hands. Always watch hands. Hands kill." |
