Right now these are just concepts AFAIK, but it's still very nifty. http://www.frogdesign.com/case-study/dattoos.html

Result

Utilizing future technology, Dattoos have yet to reach fruition. The final concept aims to achieve a convergence of the following capabilities: DNA-reader and identification technology; nanosensors and interactive "touch reading" for finger tips (Braille); pattern and image recognition; self-learning and educational applications; living materials that change shape and feel; flexible OLED displays; full voice interaction, directional laser speakers; bionic nano chips; and cyborg components.

That's a little far fetched for a digital tattoo, IMO.

Why in God's name would people want to tattoo that crap onto themselves, when they can just wear it? Especially since the latter allows for significantly easier upgrading, customizing, and interaction?

Why do people want to get tattoos in the first place? Temporaries/henna allow significantly easier updating, customizing, spelling correction, and other forms of editing.

EDIT: This was meant both to answer your question and to pose another at the same time.

Because that's art. This is technology. You don't really have a need to update art unless you really want to. You will, eventually, have a need to update your technology.

True... I mean, if all your Dattoo can do is play "The Final Countdown", eventually you're just going to leave it turned off. Or so the rest of us would hope, anyway.

Um:

QUOTE
Expressive Technology

All hardware would be created on demand and assembled via a special online design portal. Users view, test-drive, and select their product from a variety of options, both functional and aesthetic. They also set the lifecycle of the product, to be utilized for a few hours or a much longer amount of time. Once users are satisfied with their specific configurations, they have this fully-functioning circuitry - including all UI-interactive and display functions - "printed" onto recommended areas of their skin. Energy would be pulled from the human body to run the programs. At the end of the day, users would simply wash the Dattoos off, beginning anew the following day.

Um:

I gave up reading after a certain point. But your quote just makes it sound even dumber. So now, instead of being permanent, you have to reapply it every day? Again: Why not just have it woven into your clothing and whatnot? Just upgrade it when you need to rather than go through the hassle.

Hell, Shadowrun already has this, basically, in the form of nanopaste trodes (or whatever they're called). There's a reason most people don't bother with those, too. Especially when they can just put a pair of regular trodes into a hat or wig instead.

they appear to be using the person they're applied to as a power source, although I suspect the answer is 'because it looks cool'

That's assumed for a lot of the tech in Shadowrun, too.
