I have a character who's from Tír na nÓg, and I'm looking for places with information for his backstory. Anything with even a small tidbit on the Tir, Official IRA, or Unseelie Court would be immensely helpful. We're running a 4th ed. campaign set (currently) in late 2071, rolling over into 2072.
So far I know of: Tír na nÓg (the obvious place to start) London Sourcebook Shadows of Europe Robert Derie's unpublished Tír na nÓg draft from http://ancientfiles.dumpshock.com I currently do not have access to the 6th World Almanac. |

6th world has a 2 page section on Tír na nÓg, a map, and a page or so of fluff comments, plus all the major events happening there since it's creation to present day.

Looks like you've got it all named already. The TNO book goes into some depth on the whats and wheres and is critical for the nit-picky background stuff like the fact that teh punt rather than the nuyen is the common currency, how to get in and out (legally, which is a pain, and illegally, which is lethal), and all that sort of thing and I'd recommend it highly.

The adventure Celtic Doublecross may or may not have some useful, generally Irish, info in it. I really don't remember, and managed to lose my copy somewhere, sometime, so can't check to see.

This reminds me, I made a char a while back for a friend, who was path magician. Born into elven nobility, but escaped when she got the chance. The only thing I can't do is names. What do you call Irish Elves?

That was deliberately unhelpful. Shame on you. I feel no shame at all. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif) |

What do you call Irish Elves? Sidhe or shee perhaps? It's the root word for the term banshee, which (you may be aware) are Infected elves. |

Probably Tuatha de Danaan, "The People of Danu". "Sidhe", from what I know (which isn't saying much), is a term that can generally be used in a similar manner to "Fey". And that could include trolls, dwarves, elves, pixies, and all non-human magicians. Tuatha de Danaan, on the other hand, is a mythical race of people who were in Ireland before the Gaels, and were generally seen as "better". More graceful, more charismatic, more skilled, longer lived. Sound familiar?

SR is already ahead of you in that regards, AK. There are thirteen particular families -- incidentally, the ones that maintain most of the high political offices, own all of the big Tir corps, and are especially elf-heavy in the family tree -- that are called the Danaan families (with the big boys of the group called the Danaan-Mor). They took the name because they claim to be the direct descedants of the Tuatha de Danaan.

When I said names, I meant real names. Given and family. I can't call her Elfy O'Pointy-Ears. (To her face)
What I've got now is Kate Miller. Would that suit an Tir na nOg "noble" elf? |

I would do some digging through Irish mythology; while you can find Irish with that name (I have a cousin in Ireland named that actually) it doesn't really shout, "Tuatha de Danaan" to me. There are lots of interesting names if you start poking around in the lists of Sidhe and Irish heroes/heroines. |

It's just a name. It doesn't have to shout anything. Any old Irish name should be fine, in my book, unless her parents (not her) were all smitten with the "Oh, look at us, we're living in Tolkien" lifestyle.

It seemed like he was looking for a bit more than that though. And Tir elves certainly seem to go in for the whole "living in Tolkien" thing^^ |

Also, doesn't sperethiel add honorifics to people's name? As in -rent in Arsenal? I just need two elven names, one for a generic noblewoman and one for a powerful path magician/swordsman/trainer.

For names, just google "Irish baby name" and "Irish family name". Pick something that sounds elfy. And keep in mind no matter what name you say, NO ONE is going to call you by it. I learned that the hard way when all my old demon names I spent HOURS researching were reduced to "Bob", "Joe", "Frank", "Lucy", etc.

If she was born into elven nobility, she could have the last names of some of the big houses - I think Tir Na Nog sourcebook has a list of the 13 big 'uns, along with the sub-houses...
Each of the 13 houses was from a specific part of Ireland and also specialized in certain areas of magic / commerce / politics / etc. Choose a last name from the house that fits your character background. Then I'd say just choose an "appropriate" Irish first name (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) *edit* Oh, and I've found this link to be a little interesting or helpful too: Irish myths |
