I handled it like Zen Shooter01 most of the time. One or two high pay runs per month plus one or two -usually easy- low to minimum pay jobs per month on the side. Normaly the high pay jobs alone would be enough for lifestyle and regular expenses, but the mini-runs offered a small bonus, extra contacts and some training (karma).
Bloody beginners (either inexperianced or now to the town) would have to do only small jobs at shity pay, till the fixers/jhonsons had tested (and milked) them and they got enough reputation for the good stuff. |

The last run the team ended up with 400,000 between them. Hey ghouls suck at negotiating, and they made a couple of mil anyways.
The team also earned 2-4 notieriety each depending on their actions. This was for 5 different assassinations and body drop offs in 1 night! It was also the run where two team members including the mage died. But they got their cred and an organ legger contact. Then got framed! They won't get that sort of payout again soon. |

On a very similar idea, how do you create barrens level runners without making them all vastly underpowered?

Put them up against oppositon that is equally underpowered or stress the importance of avoiding conflict?

The back story for one of the runners in my campaign, is that while his was 13 (he's an ork from the barrens), he came across a freshly killed cybered guy. He took the body to his mother's boyfriend (his smuggler contact) and traded 4 years worth of low to no pay apprenticeship for the money implant the cyberware in himself, and for the training.
4 years later, he has his cyber and bioware, some weapons, a bike, skills, and a better than average contact with a panzer smuggler. Another idea would be, someone's brother/contact is a hacker, switched out the info at a cyber clinic, had the char go instead of joe companyman. There are all kinds of ways to explain why someone from the barrens has some decent gear with them. |

I give them more then they need, and less then they want.
The trick is figuring out what they need and want. |

I usually take the average lifestyle costs of the group (anything above a high is dropped down to high for the calculation) then mupltiply by 1.5.
Then take that number and divide by the ammount of runs they do during a IC month. So 5 chars with 1 sqatter, 2 low, and a high = 9500/4 = 2375 avg They do 3 runs a month so total formula is something like this... (2375*1.5)/3= 1187.5 per runner. Though i would round it up to 1200. This gives them enough most of them to keep thier current lifestyle, and if they can negotiate, earn more. They can also earn more with fencing. You can the 1.5 multiplier based off how hard the jobs will be if you like, this is set up for small time runners. |
