Seems like an interesting idea. Once you get past the flashbacks to the Species movies. And thoughts of G-spots.

Yeah, that doesn't fall into the uncanny valley for me so much as the nightmare-fuel valley. There's a reason why prosthetics try to replicate the form and not just the function of the missing limb.

And yet everyone seems ok with metal hooks and claws. Bet you wouldn't feel that way if pirates had been using tentacle hands for the past 500 years (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cyber.gif) |

Bet you wouldn't feel that way if pirates had been using tentacle hands for the past 500 years (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cyber.gif) People settled for metal hooks and claws because the technology for better things didn't exist. Don't mistake that for being OK with them. Edit: I can see this design being useful and perhaps even popular in the developing world. The dual-cable design is much simpler, and therefore cheaper and less maintenance-intensive, than more sophisticated devices. In industrialized countries, however, I really think it's a nonstarter. Why would you want a tentacle when you can afford a hand? |

Yeah I'd like to think Im a good enough person to get over the fact that a woman has a prosthetic arm, but if a woman had a "tentacle prosthesis" I think I'd back away from that.

Because of a fetish? There are modular cyberlimbs in Augmentation yes? Someone could have a tentacle attachment for those special nights *Starts playing Barry White* You're talking about a niche market. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that market exists, but it's still a niche. I'm talking about general distribution: I can't cite sources, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say most amputees want something that both looks and acts like what they lost, which is why mainstream artificial-limb design focuses on replicating natural limbs rather than tacking on something that humans never had. |

I would have my arms replaced for that. Man, that looks awesome. As long as I can have full function (like typing) I wouldn't care about tentacle-arms. Hands look so inefficient..

And twenty-four hours later, after the novelty has worn off and you've realized that absolutely everything on the face of the Earth is designed for people with hands rather than tentacles, you'd be back in the surgeon's office begging him to put your old arms back on.

Thats what I meant with fully function. They'd be design only. That said, I would say yes to any type of bodily replacement.

How are you going to have "full function" without hands, exactly?

Tentacles can split into smaller tentacles to simulate fingers?

Lol, technically yes but the fact that a tentacle is splitting up to create them won't allow my mind to refer to them as such. The mental image is a little jarring when I think what if they could just keep splitting them and splitting them. My god....it's a tickle monster (IMG:style_emoticons/default/frown.gif)

Well we're not playing Eclipse Phase so don't worry about that, I thought of the same thing actually.

I don't know how effective a prosthetic arm is at using keyboards. If they don't, I can't think of a lot of day-to-day things in my life that would require a full hand over a tentacle. I mean, getting dressed might be tough, but sitting on the train, reading a book? Eating? Kancho? Not too much there. I could imagine having one of each - tentacle for day-to-day things which are likely to get it misaligned or damaged, and the chrome arm for dinner dates.

Can I get one with vaccuum cleaner powered suction cups?
That would reduce need for fingers too. |
