So, I picked up the "Game of the Century" edition, including all the DLC, in (say it with me now) a Steam sale... and I gotta say, I think the increased madness quotient actually hurts the game. I mean, I understand why they did it; once you own a whole city and put the beatdown on the paramilitary police force (complete with flying aircraft carrier!) sent to rein you in, there's really nowhere to go but up. Having said that, I'm much less engaged with the plot this time around. I kind of wish that, if they had to go with an alien invasion, they'd gone about it in a more conventional manner: fighting the aliens in reality, rather than in the Matrix. I also think the whole thing with superpowers was a questionable design decision, mostly because it completely obviates the need for vehicles and therefore does away with a small but significant chunk of gameplay.

Tanegar: Superpowers are awesome!
But yeah, I am sorry that vehicles got almost completely obsoleted. (Almost, because even in a superpowered Matrix fight, an attack chopper is not a force to be trifled with, especially in co-op.) I think it would've been better if the fight had continued both in and out of the Matrix, so you could be superpowered godlike inside, and still have a reason to jack a car beyond "Oh hey, I don't recognize that model, time to save it in my garage! Gotta catch 'em all!" |

Welp, I finished the campaign. I'm kind of torn on whether to hope for another Saints Row game. On the one hand, Volition clearly r0x0rz j00r s0x0rz at open-world mayhem. On the other hand, where the hell do you go after you've usurped the throne of an interstellar empire?

On the other hand, where the hell do you go after you've usurped the throne of an interstellar empire? Saints in Space, obviously. Once you've conquered open-world mayhem, it's time for open-galaxy mayhem. Or at least open-solar-system mayhem. |
