Ok, so imagine I have a weapon outfitted with an ultrasound sight.

Would you still require the ultrasound goggles to benefit from the ultrasound modifiers or would it be possible to simply jack the sight into a datajack and route the mapping features through ones image link?

You will not need googles, but you cannot see anything that is not directly in front of the scope.

By the descriptions on p282, and in particular the fact that the Ultrasound Sight itself is described as "mapping [the area]" rather than just passing on raw echo data for the goggles to process, I would say that the best-supported interpretation of canon is that an image link is sufficient.

Not really an issue when the image link is displaying in overlay... (I just love that functionality)

Yup. My combat mage has ultrasound sensor built into his armor and has a Radar sensor* in his cyberhand. This augments his cybereyes (Thermographic vision mod)

* == I know this will not allow me to cast mana spells through walls... It's just the functionality of having something that allows me to see through walls and can scan for cyberware and it comes all in the same package.

You could upgrade a smartlink guncam with US and send the signal over the smartlink via skinlink. No datajack needed.

That would require there to be a piece of equipment called the "skinlink". You may notice that no such equipment exists.

Ah. Even better! Just use the old wired smartlink for the data stream. The image link's part of the smartlink. That should work out fine.

The description of the ultrasound sight from the Street Samurai Guide includes this;

A topographic contour map of the target appears on a retinal display or special goggles.

Not every character (even weapon specialists) use a smartlink (IMG:style_emoticons/default/eek.gif) ... all of the time.

Of course they do! A true Shadowrunner will also have a Smartball Link for their post-run recreation.
