We all have them, character ideas that we know the gm will throw things at us for considering.. here are a couple form me to get it started

Coyote shaman that has a sustaining focus... and only walks around in animal form and uses his ally spirit as his 'master' to get around leash laws...

Surged mage with bear features that has a geas that requires him to show his belly and scream "carebear stare" while casting ranged combat spells... that appear to come from the tattoo on his belly

Sociopathic elf social adept/mage. I've got a long history of getting in to character and scaring the piss out of some of the less mentally agile players. I should note that when me and my friends statted eachother out (not as standard 400bp characters) everyone had me as some form of social adept splashed with other stuff.

A decker.

Any decker, really.

Every Shadowrun GM, ever, just kicks them to the curb and says "You have an NPC Decker. Do something else."

SR4 was a big move against this, but we need to go a wee bit further, methinks.

A borderline-sociopathic Troll Physical Firearms Adept with a cyberarm who names all his firearms and sleeps with them in rotation like his own personal harem.

I can rattle that off in one breath, and everyone who has offered to GM for me has just stared in horror after I said it. Note, this is after I make a few other, more credible suggestions first. But I keep hoping.

A character with Fame and Evil Twin. He's famous, supposed to be rich but actually has to run to meet ends. So when clues lead to him, he explains that it can't be him (why would he do that, a famous and rich guy?), it must be someone trying to frame him. And when the police starts investigating that possibility, they'll get to the evil twin.

We have one of these in our games. We have taken to referring to their gender as 'elf' or alternating between he's and she's. The elf is also a rocker/musician adept face. But hey, its an LA game.

Due to some shenanigans in the metaplanes and overarching plot for the campaign, the totem/mentor spirit of Radiation has taken an interest in them... and to make matters worse, the elf not only has the idea that Radiation could be redeemed from the Twisted path(because its a fairly recent development, and stars weren't always so), but has convinced the party of this as well.

We are the slotting nicest group of runners around.

As for my concept, I always wanted to play a dwarf ghoul mystic adept from japan(gaki, koborokuru, casual racism towards gaijin, the whole nine yards) that, despite the stat spread, happens to be an art-punk, with spells designed around that theme(divination mages are surprisingly nifty, and being able to handsketch out blueprints of places the team needs to go on the fly is just nifty), but keeps it on the down-low. Lose a point of essence to pay for all the fitting-in ware possible, and play up the tiny but friendly asian lady(remember, dwarves are short) to the maximum. And maybe see how long it takes the face to notice that when she tells him he smells good enough to eat, she's not talking about his cologne(or her perfume, i guess, depending on the group). Doing everything you can to blend in and pretend to be normal, but slipping comments like that under the radar until the party goes OH GOD later.

Strangely, I never create any off the wall ideas, so I don't get any rejected... It may be a side effect of having to counter one of fellow player's insanities. He, however, has a list of characters we won't allow.

One is a person he calls "The Reverend", who is an obvious psychopath wielding monofilimant chainsaws and dismembering anyone who he thinks crosses him.
He recently tried to play a character modeled after Deadpool who ignored the 4th wall. Our characters realized he was nuts and failed to hire him.

He can be a little out there, but we love him, our own little powergamer.

Hmm...i already played an unplayable char., but only as long as it took the GM to realize how crazy he was. It was a surged fomori-ghoul with Raptor-legs, bone-spikes, fangs and claws, red skin and yellow glowing eyes as well as a thagomizer. Of course he also was a mystic adept of a possession tradition, so it took the GM several automatic rounds with a vigorous autocannot to "remove" him from our round. I like to annoy the GM.^^

I have been told that I cannot play any character who in anyway is based upon a kender. I wanted to name him Twitch, have him always jazzed up and make him a demolitions expert who happened to find other people's things in his pockets and would frequently lose track of little things like hand grenades and plastic explosives when he stopped being interested in them.

I also want to co play a character who has two personalities and so two sets of skills and mental stats. Then alternate playing that character with someone else, so that each of us would only know what had happened while we were in control of that character. And of course to be hiding this from the rest of the group, so that regardless of which personality the character tried to act like they knew what was going on.

A vampire with the glamour surge quality and an obsession with a random high school girl and a loup garou as an enemy. (though I mostly wanted to play this character so that someone would shoot him in the face)

As a joke I statted Yugi Moto from Yu-Gi-Oh. I'm pretty sure he's the reason why the Egyption tradition is a possession tradition. Anyway, all his spells are fluffed as a Children's Card Game and he is nearly incompetent without his ally spirit. He also has 6 in Knowledge: Children's Card Games.

I'm not allowed to play a tiger shapeshifter anymore. Something about the GM can't get things in a serious mood when I play that character, I had one smeg of a good time playing that char too.
Similarly, I'm not allowed to play a drake anymore, and ghouls are right out...

Along with, dragons (especially in SR) and anything related to a lizard, even if it is a normal pc race that is listed, nor any character with a bite attack, even if it is a human and the bite attack is from core rules...

At this point I think what I'm allowed to play is shorter...

No, You can't do that (Unless you are Harlequin)... The mana level is far too low for that currently. Yes, your body stays where you started the Quest., and you return to your body when it is done. However, You will find (if you look hard enough) at least several opinions here on Dumnpshock that says that you should be able to do that with an Endowed power (or two), or maybe even a Metamagic ability. But I call Shenanigans on such craziness. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Forbidden:
DeSync: All voice and ear-work done to him that cyber can do. Including built in speakers which he uses to talk with. And his voice/words are NEVER in sync with his lips movements.
Also, he is chinese and does Kung Fu. Has a Fu Man Chu beard and long white hair too. Yes, i basically made him the old man from every old time eastern movie ever . .

Blurr: complete camo gear including full ruthenium polymere suit, coat and built into his dermal sheath. cybernetic eyes covered with ruthenium polymere too.
NEVER EVER TALKS. Basically uses his whole body as an area to display emoticons and smileys and lol-speak. like a huge question mark where his head should by, while the rest of the head is actually invisible at the moment.
Also uses his camo stuff to allways be blurry and hard to look at in general. or if you blink he vanishes/re-appears.

Why? PC Free spirits do not need the ability. They dematerialize in one spot, Astrally zoom to where they want to go, and then Re-Materialize.
Astral Gateway is only for taking someone else. And I am sure that you could work out a price for such an ability. If you really wanted to add it. I would cost it at about 3 (It is not as good as Regeneration, in my opinion, which is a 5, IIRC).

Is there a speed for astral travel? A nice average MPH or something?

I don't have a regular play group where I live now, but I was in the process of getting together with a group where I lived before. They (the group as a whole) trashed both ideas before I could fully stat them out.

The first was a Skateboarding Adept. He had excellent balance, and was good at most "action/extreme" athletics, like skydiving and free climbing. He just really liked skateboarding and used it for quick escapes. I wanted to use him as an infiltration kind of guy, just with very different approaches. The group said that there was nothing a character could possibly skateboard on anywhere in the SR universe.

The second character was a cybered up Freerunning Courier. (I still love this idea) He'd been doing minor runs for a while, with the motto "I get it where it goes." He had minor hacking skills, but specialized in getting in and out without being seen (for planting evidence of any kind). They wouldn't let me play him because he didn't kill people. The one time a Johnson managed to get a bomb into the package, my character delivered it to the Johnson's boss, instead of where it was supposed to go (it was defused).

Here is the Data...

QUOTE (Street Magic, Page 94)
Astral Movement
Unless otherwise stated, spirits in astral form can move at the same speeds as an astrally projecting magician: 100 meters per Combat Turn while “walking,” 5 kilometers per Combat Turn while “running.” An astral spirit can reach any part of the world in no more than 3 hours and 21 minutes.

It won't work that way. Astral Gateway allow you to force anyone to become dual-natured and astrally project, but their body stays behind.

IIRC that kind of "astral teleportation" of physical entities through a metaplanar shortcut was possible in Earthdawn, but only as an advanced technique for a pretty specific (and rather uncommon) magical school.

I'm fairly certain that PC Free spirits can still make use of Astral Shortcuts, like every other spirit. This doesn't let them teleport anywhere at will, but it does cover places that they have already been.

Also astral gateway doesn't let you teleport through the metaplanes. It does let you Project, whether or not you are able to do that normally. The main upside to it is that you can bypass The Dweller On The Threshold with it.

Right. I thought we were talking about getting a character with a physical body from A to B very quickly.

Of course it does.
QUOTE ('Street Magic p. 98')
The spirit can open an astral rift (p. 116), forcing all physical objects within the area to be dual natured, as well as allowing even mundanes to astrally project. The astral rift can connect to any metaplane the spirit can visit itself (so while a fire elemental can probably open a rift to the Plane of Fire, it probably can’t open a rift to The Hive).

Of course it does not... Read it again. It forces Physical Objects within the Area to be Dual Natured. Your Physical Body does not travel along, however. It allows Mundanes to ASTRALLY PROJECT. That is all. Says so, right there in the quote you used from the book. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I did have a Troll once whos claim to fame was being able to survive a fight with a Main Battle Tank.
The only problem was he had to roll well to damage it with his Dikote axe (which meant either he scrapped it in one round, or he couldn't scratch the paint).

The damage codes break down, period, when you have high ratings of hardened armor. If a tank has 40 hardened armor, it will typically completely ignore a 39 DV attack, and be completely destroyed by a 41 DV attack.

Bad character ideas...

A mundane becomes dual-natured (and has no choice in the matter), and he can astrally project (if he chose to do so), detaching his astral presence from his physical body - the same way a shapeshifter mage is permanently dual-natured but can astrally project, leaving his meat behind.

Physical OBJECTS become Dual Natured (Not sure howe that works, and I am pretty sure that includes living creatures) and MUNDANES can become Astrally Projected. Again, it is right in the quote you provided... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I remember reading that the ori bomb didn't work cause when it exploded it dropped out of the astral cause the projecting magician couldn't hold it anymore. The question is would the blast from a gateway bomb be dual-natured? And would it still fall under immune to normal weapons?

Last I read immune to normal weapons doesn't mean shit when the damage from them is ridiculously higher than the critter's force rating.

Last I read immune to normal weapons doesn't mean shit when the damage from them is ridiculously higher than the critter's force rating.

So we need a suicide bomber. With all the radical causes you should be able to find one. Or just do the "Do this and your family will be taken care of" route.

Pixies. Any pixies. After:

1: A Korrigan agent betrayed his team of five years to them when they started up for their big pay off because they had interests in the megacorp they were running against.
2: The Magician with 25 initiations under his belt dueled and killed Ghostcrawler in the skies above Denver.
3: The sadistic pixie assassin who had a penchant for flaying anyone taken captive, and then skinning them after they gave up the information.
4: The Pixie Sticks/Red Mescaline speedball incident.
5: The last one was into big women. After getting a harem of troll girls and the copious amount of brain bleach involved after everyone really thought about that, coupled with the previous pixies, any further pixie characters will have a THOR shot dropped on them in their backstory, free of charge.

I always wanted to play a born rich billionaire complete mundane who is a master investigator/ninja and has three hundred points into the enemy negative quality even though he only gets 25 build worth.

Let me guess. His back story is that his parents were killed tragically in front of him when he was a child. Does he also have science expertise and make all of his own equipment? And does he have such enemies as: a red haired female magician that focuses upon plant control and growth? A crazed junkie that wears purple suits and laughs as he commits crimes? A former face that was scarred and now suffers from a split personality? A mind control mage that likes to terrify people? And a brilliant hacker that always leaves behind green question marks and riddles in computer systems after he's stolen the pay data? And an immortal elf adept who runs a secret society?

Might as well play a character of physical and mental perfection, who is as powerful as he is moral; who's physical and mental perfection comes from training he received from a team of scientists. Has a secret fortress of soliltude in the arctic, yet keeps a healthy bronze tan and an office in the 86th floor of a skyscraper in New York City.

That should be the rest of the party... or contacts (yes that go on runs with the party at times) or a combination.
