Thousands of years ago, the Brunnen-G migrated from our universe, the Dark Zone, to a parallel reality known as The Light Universe. The Light Universe was dominated by the Invae, Insect Spirits, whom te Brunnen-G decided to wage war against. The Brunnen-G succeeded in committing near-total genocide against the Insects of the Light Universe, killing all but a single powerful True Form Invae. That Invae, obsessed with revenge, would take the name "His Divine Shadow" and found The Divine Order, a hyper-militant theocratic empire revolving around the worship of His Shadow as a living god.

Meanwhile, the victorious Brunnen-G discovered immortality and with it fell into decadence and isolationism.

Kai was a proud Brunnen-G warrior until he was killed in battle in battle with the Divine Order and restored to a mockery of life by His Shadow's magic and technology. His homeworld destroyed, his people killed, and his memories erased, the last of the Brunnen-G served faithfully as a Divine Assassin for 2008 years, before being recruited by the renegade crew of the stolen Lexx (a hybrid Dragonfly Spirit/planet-killing spaceship).
After fulfilling an Ancient prophesy and killing His Shadow, Kai left the Light Universe and eventually found his way to Earth.
