Concept: An old (55+) ex-wage mage fleeing from corporate assassins after uncovering a monstrous experiment.
Background:
[ Spoiler ]
Arthur Garrett was a company man, through and through. He was born just a couple of years after the Awakening, grew up in an Ares corporate enclave, tested positive for magical talent at an Ares job fair, went to MIT&T on an Ares corporate scholarship... you get the picture. He spent thirty-five years in Ares Macrotechnology's Magical Research division, rising to the rank of Chief Training Officer in their Seattle branch: his job was to train younger mages, who nicknamed him Merlin, after the old wizard in the King Arthur legends.
Two weeks ago he noticed something out of order in the division's bookkeeping. Money - a lot of money - was disappearing. Ostensibly it was being spent on office supplies and other incidental expenses, but Garrett happened to know that none of the things supposedly being bought had actually been delivered. He decided to dig a little deeper; after all, it looked like somebody was fleecing the company, and that just didn't sit right with him. He never knew exactly what set off the alarm that destroyed his world. He discovered that the money was being diverted into something called Project Bloodstar. Ares had taken note of the Human-Metahuman Vampiric Virus' ability to force its victims to Awaken, and was trying to engineer a strain without the "side effects" (vampirism, etc). The lucky test subjects became comatose within moments of infection, and never knew the hideous deaths they died. Some weren't so lucky. Garrett was horrorstruck by the recordings. On his way to the VP's office with this evidence, he was stopped by two strapping young men who "wanted to talk."
Arthur Garrett noticed one of the men reaching under his jacket. Garrett wasn't stupid. He could see what was going to happen, what the company he had served so well for so long was going to do to him. He called on a Talent honed by years of study and practice and blasted both men before they could react. With the cunning born of years of corporate political maneuvering, he made it out of the building, out of the enclave, out of the secured part of the city, and into the Barrens, where he hoped they couldn't track him. He left behind everything he owned, save a treasured power focus that had been a gift from his favorite professor at MIT&T years before. He needed work, he needed money, he needed opportunities to strike back at the corruption he had uncovered. Surely a magician, even an old one, could find all of those as a shadowrunner.
