QUOTE (Jürgen Hubert)
Keeping the Arc cleaned up costs money. And where is Renraku going to get that money? There's not that much to be made from the Arc any more, and Renraku is a business.

The arc had always been a money sink. But better to lose money than to lose face.

QUOTE (Rotbart van Dainig)
The loss of face by admitting a defeat like that would even bigger than the event itself.
In fact, that would not only cost them way more than getting it up nice and shiny, but would cause an open season on Renraku.

Defeat? What defeat? They kicked Deus' butt and run him out of the Arcology! Flawless victory! And you wouldn't want to argue that with Renraku PR, would you?

Okay, so now there is a huge building where slaughter on a massive scale happened and where no one wants to live any more for the same reason no one wants to live on the site of former concentration camps. But don't worry - Renraku security has full control of the building again. They even reopened the mall, see? And they have rented out some other parts to various... organizations. Those rumors about squatters coming in from the Ork Underground and making their home in abandoned parts of the building are just silly. After all, Renraku has said that the whole Arc is under their control again, and Renraku Is Your Friend, and you want to trust your Friend on this, now don't you?

Oh, and you are only allowed higher than floor 31 if you have the proper security clearance, so bug off. Yes, we walled that section off. Some structural damage was inflicted during the fight to retake the Arc, but don't worry - it's perfectly safe here. Our repair crews are working on it, and it should be reopened on... oh, October 3rd or so. Two weeks after that at the latest.

That's how I imagine the Arc to be: Renraku claims that they have the whole building under their control, and Joe Citizen probably believes it thanks to corporate propaganda, but in reality it woud cost Renraku huge amounts of money to keep an eye on every part of the building all the time (the buiding is frigging huge after all), and so they just don't bother with many areas.

And the shadow community knows it.

The point is not about Joe Citizen - its about Business.
If the shadow community knows, many other corps will know... and weakness isn't something you want to demonstrate when you are not that well indeed.

Cross' example should have demonstrated that well enough. ;)

Given Deus' complete and total penetration of the arcology's computer network, they're going to have to sterilize the entire system which will take months, if not years.

Renraku's going to slip further and further down the megacorp totem pole while they deal with this...

Didn't the City of Seattle take over responsibility for the Arcology at some point?

That was handed back to Renraku in SotA64, IIRC.

Ah, ok. I knew that Seattle had it for a while, but wasn't sure whether they gave it back or not.

How many years has it been since they "reconquered" the Arc? Eight?

By now, they have probably extracted everything they could learn from the remains. And sooner or later, they find themselves with an absolutely huge building and no real way of extracting a profit from it. They have already lost all the face they could loose when they lost it the first time, and all the other megacons already know about it. Frankly, the Board of Directors probably want to forget about this whole mess and bury it next to Huang - after all, everything was his fault.

Sure, the other megacons have sent their own runners into the Arc - and it is hard to stop them, given the situation - but after some time they won't bother once they find nothing new, either. Sooner or later, the corporate world will forget about it, too - with the exception of those who lost relatives.

Perhaps some day the events of Christmas 2059 and its aftermath will be forgotten by most, and Renraku will unveil some sort of grand project to rejuvenate the site and make it a money-maker again. But for now, it will get lousy security and a low priority by Renraku. For the moment, they have cut their losses.

And they are certainly not going to maintain ultra-high security for eight years on some site that's only loosing them money.

If that would be the case, no need to even reclaim it - that may work for Americorps, but not for Japanocorps.

Or if you are a contestant on the show Survivor: Renraku Arcology (Sprawl Survival Guide, p 25).

Sprawl Survival Guide has some interesting canon bits about the SCIRE on p78:
QUOTE
For far too long, people’s attention has been directed downtown, to the Renraku Arcology. With the liberation of the Arcology finally complete, cleanup and reconstruction got off to a rocky start when Renraku execs and Metroplex authorities butted heads over who was going to pick up the tab. The rehabbing has started up again, but it seems negotiations between Renraku and Governor Lindstrom over the future of the arc have simply stepped out of the public spotlight.

> Liberated my hoop! There are over 30 floors still under lockdown. Army units keep those levels sealed off, but I managed a peak at their status boards when my team got in for some scavenging, disguised as a tech crew doing repairs to the elevators. We might go back in a couple of weeks now that the recovery is back underway. If we do, I’ll try to get into one of those floors and upload my scan.
> Scrap Rat

Even with the reconditioning, structural, technical and computer experts will take months to assess the extent of the damage and the systems’ reliability. Of the 100,000 people imprisoned inside on December 24th, 2059, less than 10,000 were found alive. A staggering 63 percent of that number now suffer from some sort of disability. Former Seattle Governor Schultz remains among the missing.

I think you're overstating this a bit. The books say that whilst Renraku North America was badly hit by this Renraku the central holding company and the other divisions like Renraku Europe, Asia, Africa etc. weren't that badly affected. Add in Shikei Nakatomi's third of Fuchi and whilst the whole affair has kicked them down, they're certainly not out.

No, the UCAS Army handed over most of to the Metroplex Guard.

The decision whether to sell it back to Renraku was still up in the air.

IIRC, Huang spun a lot of the situation so that he came out looking like a hero, and nearly got the CEO's seat. I think most of the heat fell on the now deceases Aneki, since the project was his baby to begin with.

Completely off topic, I want to know what's going on with 'Anne Pencyk'

No idea, but Huang's in prison for super-duper embezzlement.

Quite.

The fact that he didn't just embezzle for the hell of it, but that he did it with purpose makes it so much funnier.

Personally, I'd use the fucker for target practice if I was a Director. But that's me. I'm a dick like that.
