I am not talking about 500g of gun-powder. Possibly even not encapsuled in some way. I am talking about 10 fragging kg of military grade explosives. Are you really sure that is a good idea?

QUOTE (Critias @ Oct 28 2005, 12:02 AM)
I...really can't think of many runs that've got humorously wrong.  James, MFB, WK?  I feel like by having competent players and ruthlessly professional GMs, we're missing out on some wacky fun, or something.  Closest I can think of would be that one job where Mr Johnson punched out the rigger's eye and NPCs shot off the adept's leg and whatnot, but that wasn't really the player's fault, so much as things going just perfectly according to my own sinister plans.

Well, I can think of two specific instances just yesterday (well, Wednesday) where I was the GM for a solo run and had to quickly cover the player's ass because I wasn't going to let him die because of a dice roll. I've killed enough of my own PCs that right now I am not in the mood to kill someone's signature PC who has been around because he completely botched a soak test fighting a free Insect spirit who got the drop on him.

But stuff like this, or any myriad competitors for "my players were either ignorant, high or suicidal" threads? Never.

that realy depends, any objects around that the blast force can trow about?
most likely you would feel it, maybe be trown away and get badly bruised and some broken ribs. but deadly? only if staying damned close :P

check the oklahoma bomb. how far was it between pillars? how many of said pillars got damaged by the blast? how much explosives was there in said blast?

remember, most of the damage came from the structure collapsing, not directly from the blast.

hell, on a hard surface you can survive a grenade blast by trowing yourself to the ground. the explosives will not do much and the shrapnel will go over you as the hard surface deflects the force of the blast upwards.

the question realy becomes, what is put into the word safe. is it totaly unharmed, or is it banged around but otherwise ok? i do belive that maybe the explosives in SR should have a secondary stun effect outside of the blast area thats about the same in size if not double that just to indicate how far the effect realy can travel. but i dont think its that far off when it comes to blast force and the area of effect it have.

still, better safe then sorry ;)

For General knowledge, this is about the size of a standard, U.S. Army satchel charge (20lbs of C-4 in 16 1.25lb blocks).

Didn't find solid numbers for the damage you could expect (and I don't have access to a copy of FM 5-25), but they use 1/2 of one to blow man-sized holes in brick walls.

yes, but what do they see as a safe distance from it when detonated?
ie, how close can you be and survive?

i found this about nitroglycerin:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitroglycerin

there it says it have a explosive velocity of 7700m/s, but how fast is that energy absorbed by the surrounding air?

and here is something about c-4:
http://people.howstuffworks.com/c-42.htm

where its said that it have a initial expansion of about 8050m/s.

but i need to figure out how much energy it needs to more x amount of air around so to speak :P

Adding shrapnel to an explosive brick adds a unpredictable element to an already dangerous situation, including greatly increasing the range at which things will get fragged.

Has anyone ever deliberately added shrapnel to an explosive device for the express purpose of anti-personnel?

If you want to know the equations for determining the lethaloty of an explosive device, I am aware of no better source than FAS military analysis network.

This particular PDF was found in a link from the FAS Fuel-Air Explosive page and is quite informative.

hey, nice page. and by the looks of the formulas and charts i would say that the SR explosives are not that far of. atleast given the abstract damage system...
