Right, I've been playing a stealth adept for most of the year, and have got crap all idea what to spend the bit of cash I've got saved up on, since the equipment and everything is so damned convoluted and hard to understand.

So, Stealth Adept, specialises in unarmed combat, pistols and security systems. I have :nuyen: 57,500 to spend. What the heck should I buy?

I currently have assorted firearms, a tazer, armour, a rating 4 fake ID, datapad, survival kit, phone, radio etc.

Save up for a Ruthenium Polymer suit with Thermal Dampening. Your GM will hate you forever.

By specialized in Security Systems, do you mean he has Electronics and Electronics B/R skills, or just the Knowledge Skill? Because quite frankly the latter is just fluff, and if the former is the case you're horribly under-equipped and will need a few hundred thousand more to get all the electronic toys you're missing.

I've been saving up the entire year for a ruthenium suit. my GM has quoted me at least 80k for it. Considering that I have spent all up not even 10k, and we have played almost every week since uni semester started, it should give you an idea of how much cash we get.

Yes, I have the electronics (security systems), B/R of the same, and knowledge of the same.

You don't need a full body suit for Rue to be effective. Need to peek around a corner? Pull on your Rue ski-mask and look around the corner!

Get a Rue-coated gun, and a Rue arm/glove setup, and there you go, and invisible gun wielded by an invisible arm.

Don't forget to get Rue-coated surveilenece gear. Audio bugs, videocameras, motion sensors ... land mines. You know, anything that you need to hide.

Also, Get a 'trode net, an external version of that piece of cyber that translates thoughts to words for broadcast, and a DNI-modified radio. Never underestimate the power of silent communication.

80k? jesus. i paid 80k for mine, but mine's got 10 scanners, rating 4 thermal dampening, and rating 4 chemseal. to start out with, just get a ruthenium-coated poncho, man. that shouldn't run you more than ~50k.

I would suggest spending some of it in another area: Contacts.

Having the plans of any building you want can be very handy. (Make sure to also ask for HVAC and electrical)

Also you could ask to pay for some courses in various usefull disciplines, such as chemistry, martial arts, gymnastics...

Remember, Knowing is half the battle!

If that's all the money you've made, and you aren't in a ganger campaign, then I'd humbly recommend you jump up onto the table at the next game and do pelvic thrusts in the faces of the sammies, deckers, and riggers while jeering them.

Not that you have a rigger, he would have quit the first time he lost a drone if it would take him five years of running to replace it.

Once you're done celebrating your choice of a non-nuyen dependent character, invest in some of the toys straight out of SR3: a Scanner with some built-in Decryption and maybe ECCM, one of the microphones (Laser, Shotgun, etc.), maybe a Signal Locator and some Tracking Signals, a Bug Scanner, a Dataline Scanner, maybe a Jammer...

A Chem Sniffer wouldn't be a bad idea if no one in your group has the cyber versions. A Gas Detection System and an Ultrasound Detector/Emitter are also good buys.

If you're reaching out to sourcebooks, consider some Thermite and such. You can never have enough Thermite.

You probably won't be able to afford a fraction of this stuff, and you can survive without most of it, though you'd be surprised how helpful a lot of these toys can be when you know how to use them. A Scanner and Laser Mic give you a whole new method of doing legwork, and you can't call yourself a True Paranoid Freak ™ without a Bug Scanner and Dataline Scanner.

Good microtransceiver with appropriate encryption. Good scanner with appropriate decryption. Shotgun and laser microphones can work wonders if you're creative with them. Consider a few cheap video cameras and a transmitters along with enough bugs to make your ears bleed (dataline taps are also nice that way).

Ruthy suits are all well and good, but they make the GM's life hard which can in turn make yours absolutely miserable.

Spy Gear - definitely a good suggestion. Even better if disguised as common objects:

Micro Transceiver => pendant necklace
Sequencer => MP music playback unit
White Noise Generator => notebook computer.
Micro dart (1 shot) => cigarette holder
Remote Micro Vid Camera => pack of smokes (yeah I stole this one from True Lies but it was way too cool especially with the HUD Foster Grants)
Ares Super Squirt loaded w/ Gamma-S => travel coffee mug (just don't forget & drink from it)

For any comm/jammer systems get ECM (rating 5 minimum)

If you already have a bit of cyber (like a smartlink) get a Beta induction datajack and transducer. When hooked into your micro transceiver it becomes a more essence friendly version of the Headware radio. Total essence cost -.21.

Oh, and for those nights when friends are over, a case or two of Scrumpy

White Noise Generator =>Cellphone.
Micro dart (1 shot) => cigarette

Fixed.

You can fit an FM radio jammer in palm of your hand (RF chip, 9v battery, 3 inches of antennae)

I'm sure you could fit it in a modern-sized cellphone.

In SR3, a standard white noise generator's basic conceal is 4 (small suitcase/briefcase) and weight is 5. By the rules in SOTA 2064, the smallest you can make one is about the size of a standard (not slim) notebook computer.

Guess some characters just don't get invites to Tres Chic affairs. During her career, Night Angel has been to a number of upper crust elbow rubbings which is where she got the idea for disguising her microdart launcher. She usually loads it with a tracking signal microdart to tag the mark we need to follow. In the spy game, you have to be ready to blend into any type of setting - hence, she has a lot of specialised toys for just about any occasion - Casual, Formal, Corp, Barrens, etc.

Only the female characters would use cigarette holders I'd think even in tres chic affairs. I just can't see Bond using a cigarette holder even while he was in his tux. Just hide the darn thing in the cigarette, the holder (can be used by both male and female) will an additional platform for the launcher. Plus, you can hide that special cigarette next to several normal ones, it makes it easier to escape detection... hopefully.

thanks PBTHHHHT. you read my thoughts.

SR3 also says cellphones weigh one kilogram, whereas I know you could squeeze one into the size of a pen today (Ok, a really thick pen, and you'd have to quash the interface, but the important stuff would be there.)

Yeah, I agree, the CH works for Night Angel because the character's female.

For male characters (unless they are..you know..), disguising it as a single cigarette would work better. Since the filter side is put in the mouth there wouldn't be a risk of shooting one's self un less you were not paying attention.

On the scale & weight of items (such as the cell phone example in Fix It's post) I agree. In real life wireless phones are smaller than a pack of cigarettes when closed. I was just using the rules as they stood in SOTA 2064 which set limits as to how far you can reduce the size of an object concealability wise. Even given today's electronic tech level, it would be quite possible to make many things much smaller than they are in SR3, especially if you are in the business of manufacturing covert equipment. A good example are the mini spy cams on the market, unless you know what you are looking for, they are almost undetectable.

It always seems that the game world lags behind the real world tech curve, but to follow it more accurately would require constant micro-updating of the rules - Something I certianly do not have the time for.

“This is your spy cam.”

“THIS is Carlos’ spy cam and THIS is my spy cam? Look at the size of this thing! Size matters, but in the spy world, it’s reverse. You want people to say ‘Look how small, sexy, and sleek this is’…not ‘HOW HUGE THIS IS, look what I just pulled out of his pants, it’s huge.’ People will laugh at me if they pull this out. Is that his escape module?”

“Yes, it is. I know, everyone wants to be like Carlos.”

“Well, I don’t want to BE like Carlos, but I can’t help noticing that my stuff looks like you can get it at Radio Shack in 1972.”

nothing, as the dart would come out backwards, thus you'd just get a mouthfull of guide fins. :D

unless you manage to somehow swallow it whole, in which case you're farked...

you'd probably want to color-code them in some innocuous way.

When I bought a Wizkid copy of SR3 to replace my dearly disintergrating FASA copy of SR3, I noticed that the weight of cellphones had disappeared. Can't recall if the conceal was modified OTTOMH.
