Just an update for you all: I've received the character generator and forwarded it to the flashbackhumor guys. They should have it up fairly soon. Jon lives in Japan, so he might not get to it until he wakes up which is early evening for us in the US.

Why not just ask Deagann to host the new files on his site?

What kind of format are the data files? Definately not Latin1 ASCII.

Yeah, sorry for the delay. I'm quite busy now... I have the files (thanks) and I'll upload them ASAP.

I've got a shed-load of hosting space and bandwidth. I can have this up in half an hour if you want.

PM or Email me if you want this.

-K.

EDIT: I thought you might be interested to know that I've successfully got your generator working on Linux now. It is nice. I don't know how you'd feel about posting the source for this? I have some programming skills myself as I expect others here do too. It would be great to have an Open Source Shadowrun character generator and it would share out the maintenance work, which is one of the big issues with a project like this.

But thanks for posting this regardless. I think this may be useful. I particularly like that you have karma costs included as well as Build Points.

Thank you Kairo and Daegann for your work. Everything is working great for me so far. I also like that you put some generated characters in there as well. It is a great starting place to get some ideas for a character. I also look forward to seeing the Linux version Knasser is working on.

I just found a bug. If you load up the generated character Ryan (Foxx).

To reproduce the issue you must:

1. Load up Ryan (Foxx)
2. Set his metatype to Elf

Now when you go to raise Ryan's abilities it will cost only 4 BP to do so. It seems that changing the character's metatype after it has already been selected and built is a bad idea.

(EDIT)

This seems to be a global issue with every single character, not just Ryan (Foxx)

(EDIT AGAIN)
One last thing, by abilities I mean Strength, Reaction, Agility, Intuition, Charisma, etc.

(EDIT AGAIN AGAIN)
After another look it seems to only be doing it with INTUITION and LOGIC

Um. I'm actually still waiting for a response from any of the people involved. I thought it would be a bit rude to just stick up the character generator without permission, but I can have it up there in five minutes flat the moment the author says they'd like me to. I've emailed, but no response.

As to the Linux version, what I meant was that I've got the Windows version running on Linux now. I can post instructions for this if anyone is interested.

I'm a bit busy with a professional programming job at the moment (i.e. I'm getting paid for it), but if Daegunn posts the source code, I'd be willing to help out where I have the time. My preference would be to port it into Python which would then be inherently multi-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux and Unix). I think it would also make it a little more maintainable and customisable. A job like this is best done either by a group of people or one person who is actually paid to do it.

Response?

Okay, sorry for the delay... It's finally online on my site thanks for the files Cang ^^

It's also another version of the program (a minor one though). In fact it's an unfinished version. I started it last year but never touch it since last october... Anyway the function remain exactly the same the only change is that you can change the order of what have selected (skill of the character, equipment etc) in the list. The main form is also resizable (the other windows are not). That's all what I done... :-/
Here with street magic you can see that the program will have its limit with new sourcebook. (take the possibility to get adept power with a geas... it's not possible)

And unfortunatly I haven't the time and the motivation to update the program. About the source, as I said earlier :

QUOTE
it's done with Delphi 6.0 so it's in Pascal Object.
I'm not opposed to give the source but in fact I'm shame to say that for this project I worked quickly, with no real conception (just in my head but no UML or something so it's pretty confuse I suppose for others) and almost no annotation... So I'm not proud of my code ^^;;

So i can give the sources but I'm not proud of them and finaly I don't know if it's really useful. I'm really sorry.

I'd be interested in the format of your data files. It could be interesting to convert them to xml.

Great job btw. It'excellent prototype, at the very least.

You're welcome. ;) But really Daegann and Cang deserve all the credit for the program. All I did was get it hosted while Daegann worked out his site issues.

Good to know about this bug. I'll have to look out for it when working on characters. Also, just to add a fun note about this, these characters that were included in the zip file are actually characters that my gaming group has been playing with, and are also going to be in series of stories I plan on writing. Hope you like the concepts.

The program errors on finding the data files. I have them in the same folder as the EXE but it tells me it can find the data files and then tries to create one and it can't to that either :(

Seems like they need to be in the File directory instead of the same directory as the .exe.

I've had no problems at all with the character files being in the same directory as the .exe.

1. I *love* this app.

2. It appears that when you remove a skill with a specialization, you only get points back for the skill, not the specialization. A minor quibble, but....

3. I *love* this app.

On my installation, all of the data files are in a subdirectory called File - no 's'.

You may just want to try re-extracting all the files from the zip, making sure that the option to extract subdirectories is turned on. Without knowing what program you're using to unzip them, I can't give more specific instructions on how to do that.
