What might be a more interesting discussion:
Is any other race besides human worthwhile? That bonus edge is sweet.

The humanis policlubs can use this as part of their arguments as to why humans are better... :silly:

Az, if you had a datajack installed, then you would lose that one point of magic. So you can end up with a character who was essentially "burned-out" before they ever knew they were magically inclined.

*psh* Feel like joining us in the 2070's chum? Datajacks? Why not just dust off grandpa's old desktop computer and ram it in to your skull?

Because of the point balance in SR4, mundanes have so many options available to them, most character concepts in that vein are viable. Edge is what makes that possible. Any mundane with a low edge is dead meat. My experience to back that is my "ubar street sam" used 4 edge in one combat to avoid a messy death. One tough battle, and a low edge character can be in a world of hurt.

Well you can still have edge 5 with non-humans and an ork gains 50 extra bp in attributes plus low light vision, and you only pay 20 bp and lose for 10 bp in edge. That's a net gain of 20 BP without counting the low light vision, so it doesn't seem like a bad deal to me. Of course you also have lower maximum Charisma and Logic, but that doesn't matter if you you're not planning on having more than 4 in those.

Entirely true! Maybe that's a contributing factor to the scarcity of magicans under the new SR4 Magic attribute rules. Someone should run public service announcements.

Celebrity mage: "Kids, I know implants are neat, but consider waiting until you're 18 to get them. You might make your mystic powers go away before you ever get to use them."
