From the makers of Kid Stealth brand digitigrade cyberlegs comes an exciting new product -Birdman Cyberwings.

Since the dawn of time man has dreamed of flying with the birds. That dream has come true for the first time thanks to the brilliant cyberengineers at Aztechnology.

Birdman cyberwings are made from the latest super-durable cybermuscles streched over a lightweight smart-metal frame and a can support a troll's* weight with ease.

When not in use, the wings roll up into tiny cylinders that are easily concealed beneath a a trenchcoat. **

Fly*** in style in

*Only troll sized models. All cyberwings should be custom fitted. Never buy used cyberwings.

**Never sit with the wings unfurled.

*** Flying with cyberwings requires a permit in most areas. Always file the correct paperwork to reduce the risk of being shot down.

Cyberwings may damage some clothes.

_________________________________________________________________

Availability: 12/1 week
Cost 90,000 :nuyen:
Essence: 2 (1 per wing)
Concealability: 0 (2 when retracted)

Cyberwings allow a character to glide for long distances. Characters with cyberwings may glide indefinatly at a rate between Quickness*3 and Quickness*5 meters per combat turn. Characters must move while gliding. If they falll below the minimum speed they will fall and sustain damage according to he rules for falling.

Characters can not take off from ground level. They must jump from a considerable height to sucessfully glide. (Use GM discretion )

Characters with cyberwings cannot wear normal clothing or armor and must have theirs custom tailored.

:) Interesting concept. My first thought was of Condorman... Yes, I am a child of the 80's :P

One question I have is if the essence cost is a bit high? Maybe there could be a basic model that is more obvious when furled that only costs 1 essence per pair, and a "stealth model" that costs the 2 essence per pair but is more concealed when furled. The basic set might just fold up like bird wings (I'm thinging of Angel/ArchAngel from the X-Men here), and the stealth model has the cylinders that actually retract partially into the "wearers" back when furled?

And I know this is a silly question, but I have to ask... What would happen if I only bought one wing? :P

Nah, a cyberware flying device should be a pair of gems implanted in the shoulder blades that propell you through the sky on jets of flames :D

2 essence is the cost of any pair of full cyberlimbs and wings would qualify as limbs.

If you only bought one wing then you wouldn't fly very far.

True, but they cyberarms and legs are limb replacements. The wings would be an addition.

I've always interpreted the essence loss as a loss of humanity (so to speak). The more flesh you replace with chrome, the less human you are, both physically and mentally. Even if you accept the exchange, there is part of you that registers that you are a little less human. Of course, this is my interpretation, I may be way off base.

Hmmm... Now I'm wondering. I might go have a look at the rulebook...

[EDIT]
From the SR4 book: Essence is a measure of life force, of a body’s wholeness. It represents the body’s cohesiveness and holistic strength. Things that are invasive to the body, such as cyberware and bioware, reduce Essence.

I'd say the wings are invasive (having to anchor them in, etc), but wouldn't be as big of a hit (in my mind) when compared to replacing a limb.

I think they would require a cyber torso. Something you did forget was to tell us the wing span required for each point of body. body + 4 meters? I think there is a glider in fields of fire that has gliding rules. Can you get a cyber propeller for an additional point of essence?

I'd say that they should cost 1 point of Essence total, because they're more analogous to a balance tail than a full on cyberarm.

Condorman Rocks!

As far as cyberwings go, I can see if potentially being possible, but not easily retractable. The length and girth required to give a human being gliding ability would be quite large, and the frame work would take a bit of space. That would create a rather noticeable hump on one's back. ;)

Of course, if you put them on a Troll, he could probably get extra propulsion with his farts. ;)

I'm confused by others' response to this...

Am I supposed to be picturing an Orbital Frame here? I think I've missed the reference.

And why would you need a cyber-propellor? In fact, why would you WANT one?

To have a propellor to make your glide-wings into powered, controlled flight, you would need a rather large propellor. We're talking probably 2 feet radius, here.

A propellor of that size, obviously, needs to either be above your head for a pulling prop, or below your feet, for a pusher. I don't know about you, but I do NOT want a Scything Decapitron mere inches above my head. It would KILL my hair, for one thing.

And below your feet will obviously restrict your ability walk.

So, it has to be folding. So this means you're either betting your life on a shaft rotating at a very high speed, that is by nessessity not going to weight much, and worse, is already cut in at least half...

Or you're walking around with propellors idling above your head.

Neither is very stealthy, and I woulden't bet my life on either.

What I'd do is wear a backpack that rested securely between my cyberwings, that contained either one or three chemical rockets that I could fire for emergency powered thrust. I'd say the three-bottle-rocket should be capable of launching you from the ground, whereas the one bottle should only be for that emergency boost of "I need altitude/speed, NOW!"

Obviously, you could use the three bottle rocket version for three independant uses of the one-bottle-version. Or you could use it all at once while in the air for a superboost.

Ye Gods, let the demme wingless windlings rest in peace.

Anyway, wings for a metahuman are impractical as Hell. We're too damn heavy, for one, and we don't have the strength to flap the damn things. The wingspan needed just for half-decent gliding...any cyberwings are gonna be purely cosmetic.

A balance tale is one limb for one essence. Wings remain one essence each.

You cant have bird style folding wings because any wings that can support a metahuman wouldn’t fit in a corporate entry hall, less your flat.

I would say a cybertorso would be needed, and not just any cybertorso but one made specifically to support the wings (no change in cost but you can’t use the one you already had)

I doubt the feasibility of the originally described folding tech, at least not with the strength to hold a metahuman in the air.

Lastly I think its a silly idea but your free to be silly if you so desire.

If we're talking separate limbs for the cyberwings, they'd be more like Birdman's (Harvey Birdman Attourney at Law) or Angel's (X-Men).

If you're talking Marvels' Vulture, they'd go under the arms. I can see feather-styles & bat-like wings (ala DC's Man-Bat), but they wouldn't be retractible, almost impossible to conceal and gliding would be tricky; you'd have to get atop a short building (2 stories or more) & pray for a decent headwind.....

Well, the idea is a hanglider whose shape can be changed dynamicly using DNI bolted to your back rather than wunctional bird like wings. Unfolded, they would be at least three meters long each, probably longer. And the essence cost does include reinforcing the skeletal structure. A full-blown cybertorso shouldn't be a structural requirement for any 'ware. It is just a shell, after all.

That makes sense. Could one use bone lacing as the reinforcment? Maybe make it compulsory, and 0.5 essence per wing.
