Were there Ally Spirits in SR2?

I'll check my copy of The Grimoire (2nd edition) and Awakenings 2057 when I have my lunch break, I think they were invented prior to SR3 though.

Ally Spirits are detailed in the SR2 Grimoire.

I wonder if it's less of yet to question it and more of "maybe if we ignore the not-so cyberpunk concept of an earth elemental mecha, it'll go away" :)

Emo--for the cost of summoning the spirit twice, and the added benefits of: no risk of drain, no need for house rules, added speed, possiblity of friends with you, and using the earth elemental to smash the bejeesus out of something else,--you could simply buy a Patrol Car. Both will have hardened armor 10.

Sure, you can dikote a patrol car, but can you have sex with it?

Random tangent: Any takers as to what dikote'll do in SR4? My money is on -1 AP.

But... rockman mecha!!!! Plus, you could just summon a rockman and have him surround you; 4 drain can't be that much for a mage who has at least 10 dice to resist. He'll be an on-the-spot type of thing that you could use in the middle of a firefight.

went over that already > just apply cover modifiers. Bonus to a car w/ armor : can't be banished, or controlled by another mage. I haven't seen rules for it ye in 4th (unless I just missed them ) but they were there in 3rd, so it stands to reason that they'd show up.

Dissonance Tanget: We've been using -4 AP for bladed weapons, just like APDS, since they both halved armor in 3rd. As for non-bladed dikoted weapons.... well.. honestly, I've never seen anyone use one.

Since they both huh-what!? Halved armor?
IIRC Dikote added +1 to the Power of all weapons, and additionally (in the case of bladed weapons) increased the damage level by one.

No wonder no one ever used anything else.

Maybe not the first time...but try it often enough and you'll end up with that infamous critical glitch and rockman mecha will crush your head after you pass out from the drain.

Additionally as Fist pointed out, if you want to be able to breathe and have a clear line of sight, the rockman would at best provide cover rather than the actual armor.

Fist/MoonHawk--As I recall, Dikote halved barrier rating so it became possible for someone with a dikote sword to hack through walls rather than simply end up with a blunt sword. Against armor, it simply provided a +1 or 2 and increased the damage level for slashing weapons.

I wouldn't mind for dikote to offer -1 AP or -2 AP for slashing weapons. Not as strong as in SR3, but makes more sense.

They have gotten in to trouble a couple of times for it too.

Another featureck of the Wikipedia is that it tend's to be a bit more colored by peoples opions, this can be either good or bad depending on what sort of research you are doing. However there is some good information in there (aprticularly on pop-culture), just cross reference with some other sources to make sure you don't get hoodwinked.

This isn't something new. There are books stocked in reputable libraries of higher learning that contain patently bizzare assertions and conclusions.

I was in Chapters the other day, Canadian equilavent to Borders, and they now have a small section titled Non-fiction :please: that contains things on the Grail, Loch Ness Monster, and what appear to be books in the vein of the Celestine Prophecy.

Non-fiction section used to be an old bookstore joke, and there were customers that would get angry and argumentative when they were told that the Celestine Prophecy was in the Fiction section.

That's a very good point Brahm, books can be misleading or flat out wrong as well. Books suffer from a different problem than Wiki's and Internet sources do. Because of the expense and time required to actually publish a book, books do for the most part tend to be more thoroughly researched and thought out. However this has developed in many peoples minds a belief that if it is in print it is infallible which is far from being the case. Furthermore technically everything that isn't explicitly fiction, is non-fiction however this spans the spectrum from reference to opinion journals to cookbooks. I don't think one type of source superior to the other, both have advantages and disadvantages. Being thorough greatly increases your chances of being correct or accurate.

So no, Wikipedia doesn't solve everything anymore than Encyclopedia Britannica or Fermat's last theorem or the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy does.

Don't Panic :)

Rockman mecha will provide, like, 95% cover if I only leave the eye and mouth holes.

I think Megaman'd be better represented by a spirit of man, anyways. Or, well, a city spirit, but since those don't exist any more...

Besides, if you want to break out the mecha, just get a JIM suit. (ducks)

Yes, but you would then have to Control Actions on the spirit to get it to turn at the same time you turned and the like, otherwise you would next to no peripheral vision, your hearing and sense of smell would be useless as they are filled with dirt.

Additionally, taking that much cover generally causes penalties in combat, perception and spellcasting, as you have a reduced ability to interact and respond to opponents movements.

Here's an idea that might make you happy.

How about adding a +2 modifier to the armor spell in order to add an elemental aspect to it? You'll end up with an earth armor reminiscent of the Earth Armor subset in City of Heroes/Villains. Or adding an illusion spell to the thing to achieve basically the same thing.
