In SR3 I sent the runner's to Atlantic City. I envisioned a wasted coastline, with huge casinos, a tube-enclosed boardwalk (like a Habitrail) where aquatic nasties would sometimes try and munch on sightseers. The dirty side of the city had gotten much dirtier, and organized crime rules the roost.

Is there any canon info on AC, or the Easter seaboard besides the little blurb in NAGTNA on New York City?

nothing official. If I can add to it, I live in Philadelphia and Atlantic city is covered by our news coverage. I would expect they would go out of the way to keep the boardwalk/beach front available for tourists. Probably the casinos would get more glam to make up for the loss of Vegas in the UCAS.

The Mafia is the organized crime in the area. No ifs ands or buts. There is not a big enough asian population to supports Yaks or Tongs. not enough industry away form the casinos to support any sort on infiltration.

They've built up the highways to zip people into the tourist areas and through the Z rated security zones.

Further down the coast, the "jersey shore" you get small towns with pretty little bed and breakfasts- turn of the last century seafronts, backed by townies in clapboard houses. Except for the area around the cassion's the land is not buit up. mainly lower buildings. The nearest big city is Philadelphia and it's crime ladened poor city across the Delaware-Camden NJ.Between the z zones near the beach and the Delaware river is lots of open farm land and small town. Thisis where New Jersey gets it's repoutation for the "Garden State" so very different form the urban hells of the north of the state. Farm lands, marshes and the pine barrens forests. Home to the local bogy- "The Jersey Devil" probably a local free psirit running amok.

Atlantic City gets an entry in the Gambling section of SotA:2064. They still celebrate Miss America.

you could also try good ol' Target:Smuggler Havens for some more area knowledge. Big fan of that book myself, although it mostly focuses on N.O. and Vladivostok.

There's info in there? Hmm.

What I said about running in Vegas is even more true about AC. Besides, how am I ever going to sell the Barrens after they've seen that shithole?

Just put 'em in ford americars instead of ford focus and you're good to go.

There are regular runs of tour buses down from NYC and Philly loaded with senior citizens looking to blow their wads. These buses are often below code and poorly maintain or driven by people of dubious driving ability. A few each year crash/roll over/catch fire.

I know. That's how I got to AC the last time. I just loved that you can actually see where New Jersey begins because all of the sudden everything just seems to suck a little bit more than the surrounding states.

Give your players some high class casinos to play at and steep up the security if you haven't already (Mafia owned, of course). Keep the focus of the security to preventing robbery and cheating. They don't care so much about what goes on in their bars and clubs. With Vegas, I keep all the Matrix paydata in heavily secured places, behind wifi paint or on isolated systems, but put some interesting stuff within reach (like cameras, hotel registration & guest list, financial records, security chatter).

High... class? You're kidding, right? This is the same city where Donald Trump has a casino.

Frackula is confusing high class with high cost.
Serious bling bling and glam but most definately not high class. For style AC is now where Vegas was 20 years ago. Maybe by 2060 they will have tidied up a bit.

There is also the fact that AC will still have to contend with Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, etc. (or whatever they were renamed to after being "appropriated" in the teens) as well as Matrix gaming and whatever other forms of gambling were legalized in the UCAS.

Oh, that reminds me. Are there casino cruises out of New York (IRL), or is that more of a midwest/gulf coast thing?

I'm guessing foxwoods and other indian cassinos in UCAS will be gone. If pinkskins are focibly relocated out of indian lands there is no way they will let "redskins" stay in the UCAS.

I'm not sure about New York cassios now. if there is any gambling, it will be on the Indian lands, so same answer as above. Pennsylvania is talking about bringing in Cassinos in 2007 in regular lands(not indian) but that is getting a lot of resistance from everyone except the developers and local officials who see $.

I'm guessing the CAS will have cassinos rebuilt along the gulf coast and there could be runs based on beating out competion between the tourist businesses.

Gambling is illegal in NYC aside from the lottery and off-track betting (horse/dog races). There have been proposals in the past for casino cruises that go beyond the legal waters of NYC to gamble, but I'm not aware of any that have ever gone forward. My guess is they were probably killed by politics.

There are a few small casino cruises that head out of other coastal areas of New York State, but it's a tiny operation compared to what happens on the Gulf Coast.

Not NYC, sure there are mobbed up gambling boats out of Sheepshead bay (that's Brooklyn for you folk in the wilderness) but i was thinking of New York STATE. there's stuff north of Albany, trying to play off of the horse tracks to make income in those areas less seasonal.

Brooklyn is part of NYC. Well, unless you ask a Manhattanite.

Last I heard, the Sheepshead Bay casino cruises were dying out. Guilani went to war with them when he was still in office, making them jump through political hoops (exhaustively long background checks, hugely expensive processing fees, etc.). I'm not sure what Bloomberg has done since, but I recall hearing that one of the two main Sheepshead operations was out of business and the other was nearly so.

There are small gambling outfits upstate, but when I lived upstate nearly everyone I knew who wanted to gamble just went over to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun.

Well, the 'gambling being illegal in NY' part was a given. I meant cruises that go beyond NY's jurisdiction.

And the casinos are still around, at least they were in Target: UCAS. One was bombed by Warpath.

Anyway, thanks. I was just curious. I also now have to wonder which extraterritorial corps allow gambling on their property, and how Manhattan fits into that.

In our game world Aztechnology openly has casinos. MCT with their Yak connections supprots it. Wuxing gets into it having soaked up lesser corps as does who ever gobbled up Fuchi europe (I can't remember who that is right now.)

Y'know, I hadn't thought about the extra-territoriality of the corps...
If a corp wanted a casino on their turf, they would just open one up.

Anybody got any ideas for how the boardwalk would look now? Like I said, I envisioned a tube walkway, with the ocean coming up about waist high at points/times. I wanted to allow for sea-nasties to satisfy their craving for tourist.

Again, I'm going to guess that is is pretty clean. It's all they got. SOOO they will keep the beach clean and the boardwalk open. Possible with SWAT and FRT groups hidden near by to dash out if a nasty does ocmeo ut of the ocean. remember it's northern Jersey that is the toxic sludge. not the south.
Like Billy Joel said "Spent their weekends on the 'Jersey shore."

Believe me, I know, having grown up on the Shore, around Asbury Park. I figured there wouldn't be much beach left, hence the water coming up to the tubes.

You'd be amazed how far South the trash can flow from NY. I remember the last time I was in AC, the beach was pretty bad and the boardwalk was rough. The only thing on the boardwalk worth anything was the Ocean One (?) mall, which had one of the best Italian restaurants I've ever eaten at.

Oh, here comes a tangent:
Is there anything about the Pine Barrens anywhere? Once again, I don't remember seeing anything canon... I figure it's a wild mana zone, or maybe a dead zone? And an Awakened Jersey Devil would be really interesting... :vegm:
