I'll have to read through the guidelines and make sure I know what's what, but I'm interested...I've had an idea for an ex Triad enforcer running through my head for a couple of days now, and this'll be a chance to use him.

An ex-Triad, or any organized crime type character would easily find a home in one of the many LiTS plot threads that are ongoing . . . now, whether that is a good thing for the player remins to be seen :)

Glad that you are interested!

Wow, lots of new players. Glad to have you guys. Keep the faith, it can take a while before you get to post, but it will be worth it. Hell I have been around for a while now and I have yet to make it on a run, but I am still having a blast.

QUOTE (grendel @ Jun 9 2006, 03:12 PM)
Actually, the question you have to ask is:  will the character suffer more if I let him live?  Or will it suffice to have him die in a spectacularly painful manner?

Well put Grendel, well put. *applause*

Seriously, what kind of GMs would we be if we just killed your characters? Heck we could drop a Lofwyr Nuke at any time and just blow the whole world up. But where's the satisfaction in that?

Remember, murder is just an act, torture is an art. The former is brutal, but ultimately a one time show. The latter is an exquisite canvas on which to paint a lifetime of pain, suffering, humiliation, degradation, and misery.

Morgannah - If you're interested in keeping Cosmo alive, given Shadow's recent comments, may I suggest keeping Cosmo away from Ivan, whose life expectancy has probably dropped precipitously in the last few hours.

Vegas - I'll wait until I have your completed sheet then before I comment if you're almost done with your character.

Everyone - Slip is correct. It often takes a while to be able to post, but any LITS player will attest that is because the GM staff pays meticulous attention to ensuring we can run the absolute best game possible.

Therefore, we want to make sure that before any player enters the game we are confident that we can provide the highest level of quality gamemastering we can. So if you're moving through the process, trust us that we will take care of you, and if you're willing to see it through to the end, so are we. :)

Odd question, but is there any reference to the old English coastal defence emplacements in Shadows Of Europe? (or any other sourcebook, for that matter)

For those of you that're wonder what I'm on about, let me explain. Back in WW2, when it looked incredibley likely that the Germans would be invading by sea, they built a huge number of tiny oilrig alikes out in the ocean...they were, from what I remember, basically two pillars with an armoured bunker in the middle that had some anti ship guns in it.

Course, they were never needed, so after the second world war the guns were removed, but the emplacements themselves are still there. Anyway, about 6-7 years ago, in the height of the .com boom, someone had the bright idea of using these old emplacements as ultra secure server colos....I don't know if they're still in use, but the idea got me to thinking.

If, in the SR4 setting, those emplacements are still about (and still have that submerged hardline connection to the mainland) they'd be an ideal base for all sorts of interesting occupations, though smuggling was the one that I was thinking of (if the Triad he was a part of specialised in smuggling, it'd let me use one of the defences as a base, and give him a reason to be in Seattle).

Neon: here's a Wiki entry on that. Interesting reading. HavenCo (another Wiki entry) was the name of the colo you're talking about.

I don't remember specifically if SoE says anything about them, but maybe the London sourcebook or Target:Matrix maybe? I'm kinda short on the pre-3rd edition and Matrix books. I'll look up in SoE and get back to you.

As for them still being around in the 2060's, a lot of them probably are beyond repair, but after the Crash of '29 most of their record of even being there are gone as well. You'll still have some marked on charts as navagational hazards, but, as the Wiki entry shows, some are bound to still be around.

Yes, yes. There is a greater sense of accomplishment inherent in surviving near-impossible challenges; it makes for interesting writing (and reading, naturally), more drama, and an overall better gaming experience, however ..

*Glances toward the many and various GMs listening, voice dropping to a whisper*

.. this sort of talk only encourages them to make bigger blimps, if you know what I mean. They're quite capable of killing us without encouragement, I think, and in some cases they've had years to perfect their evil plans.

Besides, one of us has to seem cowed, otherwise they'll start questioning how e-f-f-e-c-t-i-v-e they've been
.

Ah, grendel's not so bad. He's like a teddy bear*. And, as long as these death-wish characters stay in SoCal, way away from Tony, I'm ok with that. Maybe he'll be distracted :rotfl:

*I used to have nightmares about those Teddy Ruckspin things. The eyes are freaky, man! Didn't help that I saw Chucky either that night...

I looked up a bit more on them earlier, and it turns out they constructed three of them. From what I read, one collapsed about 10 years ago, one is Sealand, and the other's still there.

There's also the old Army defences that used to be the location of Radio City in the 60s, which are probably the ones more likely to still be standing...not sure though.

Though this does lead me to wonder if anything like them would've been constructed in the Euro Wars..

Edit:

Would any of the GMs object if my characters background was he worked for a smuggling operation/Triad gang/whatever based out of something like the old sea forts?

There's got to be all sorts of abandoned facilities lying about off the coast of the UK, especially after the Euro Wars

I don't mind if this is your character's background, but barring special permission from the GM(s), all characters should expect to do the majority of their playing and living in Seattle.

Again, this is subject to the character, of course. A smuggler, for example, might have a wider range of operations, but like I said, just give us the details and we'll discuss. When in doubt, ask. :)

Rokur - Ahh but you are assuming that everyone in LiTS is a runner. :)

The fun thing about this game is that really isn't the case for all of the characters.

Smugglers Havens has some stuff on bunkers but its mostly former Russian area. Maybe the (and I'll spell it wrong cause i dont have book handy at the moment) Vladivostok area. It was part of China until the end of the second Opium war when Russia took it as part of its treaty agreement, it was then and is now a large port city. The russian mobs are the main force but its a major stop over for smuggling operations (U.S., Europe and Asian) might be worth checking into, its in the smugglers havens book. Hit me up for more info if you dont have access to book.

Well, I've decided I'm going to try and figure out how to work the smugglers thing into it, though they might end up being based out of somewhere else.

And he's not a smuggler per se, he just works for them...which would give him a better reason to be in Seattle...since if they were looking to expand their operations, sending someone to make contacts and find out what's what beforehand might be useful...

You might try leaning away from the Triads and towards the Russian Vory as the Triads are established in Seattle with like 3 or 4 groups as the Vory arent really organized there yet. The Vory also are allowed to" freelance" as long as they follow the code, especially the part of kicking up money, where as Triad membership is for life....and they're serious about that.

Vegas and JackRipper - I've been having some computer problems lately, and it's putting me behind schedule on all Dumpshock related work. I'm not technically proficient enough to fix it myself (translation: I suck at computers. Horrendously.) so I have to have someone look at it for me. I'll try to get it fixed as soon as possible so I can finish up reviewing your characters and get back to you both. I apologize for the delay.

The Vory are a rich story line :) I think we have two(?) characters in LitS that are either current or Ex-Vory.
