V-22 Escort Version?

Helicopters are too slow, jets are too fast.
so they're turning the V-22 into a multirole fighter??

as a gunship I could understand, fast on-station, and the ability to loiter, in addition to manueverability.

but why the air to air capability? don't the marines have F/A 18s for a reason?

in any case. I want one.

technically yes they do, however there is something to be said about something that is able to engage the jets and helos on station while defending the V-22, Personally i think its a crock of drek and that they should simply modify the V-22 like the did the C-130 to make them gunships and leave the air to air stuff to the F-18's and F-35's. But hey thats me.....as for having one, I made one for in game use using the vehicle shop download from dumpshock.

I see those sidewinders being intended for other gunships rather than migs.

I also would not be surprised to see the option to replace sidewinders with 2 tube Stinger launcher. In the dustoff game, Stingers and Sidewinders may be like Sidewinders and AMRAAMs in the fast mover game.

One should not forget rugged stuff like SU-25, Pukera and similar ground attack crafts as potential targets. Those can be rather hard for the man portable air defence systems and might actually require the beefier Sidewinder warhead.

Quite interesting on the linked side where the talks about mating the V-22 Fuselage with another body (War in 2020's M-100 anyone 8) ) and about the alternate "Stopped Propeller" tiltrotor.

What's next, an X-Wing Composite helicopter that goes over the Mach? :D

Speaking of armed V-22s, Dale Brown wrote a book called _Hammerheads_. It features armed Ospreys used for customs enforcement duty. It had a 30m chaingun one one side and a stinger rack on the other.

Those worked out well due to a health dose of:

"The Mac" McLanahan
J.C Powel (J.C as in ...help me or ... he is crazy)

and a lot of ugly drones.

But the armed V-22s (That appear in quite a few of his novells) are "nice". The third best thing after an Old Dog and a Cheeta.

Anyone actually read the article? They're not arming V-22s, they're creating entirely new aircraft to escort them.

Great. It'll be ready about the same time they retire the first generation of Ospreys in 20-30 years.

All Helicopter gunships currently deployed in the US and British Militaries have the capability to defend against airborne threats. Its just a way they can protect themselves from air superiority threats until the cavalry can arrive. Generally they are armed with A-A capability until air superiority has been established.
