Yeah, but it's okay if they're retroactive :)

I've got an oddball political stance... fairly liberal but pro-gun-ownership. I figure I should put a decent amount of trust in the government to handle things like policing the streets, managing health care, and the like... and make damn sure that if we're going to give our government that much power over our daily lives, the tools for revolution are firmly in the hands of the populace.

QUOTE (Shrike30)
I don't know where you live, exactly, but in the USA it's a federal crime to sell a firearm to a 12 year old.

Not if the child is accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is not disqualified from purchasing a firearm due to felony conviction or ruling of mental incomptence.
That would technically be the parent purchasing the gun with the child's money and then giving the weapon to the child but the end result is the same.

And really, statistics do show that creating stable economic prosperity is the best method of defeating gang violence. When is the last time you saw a one of Bill Gates' buddies killed in a driveby? The wealthy limit themselves to financial crimes and domestic violence.

Don't forget that we haven't even examined the accuracy of the report. I gave up on accepting news reporting after my local paper called a WW2 Vintage M1-Garand a semi-automatic assault rifle.

I agree with Hyzmarca (Aside from the Communist thing. Dude, WTF?) we must be ever wary of state power, but I am also a firm believer in the old maxim "Never blame on malice what can be explained by stupidity".

The BATF shouldn't be detaining anyone, this kid was wearing gang like colors, he ran from the cops, and did something that prompted the agents to wrestle him to the ground. And some other relavent facts were probably omitted.

The kid acted suspicious and the BATF overreacted (something they do too often), but somehow I don't think the freedom of American Republic is mortally endangered.

Hey, he's wearing strange colors... So are the "cops".

Look at that picture. Those two are not uniformed officers. The only colours they're displaying are their badges. Easy-to-miss badges. Two big white guys start running after me with guns, you bet your ass I'm gonna haul mine. And in the middle of a "run-for-your-life adrenaline rush, you really think I'm gonna listen to two people who may or may not be telling the truth yelling "Police! Freeze!" especially when all the evidence I have at my disposal says they're a couple of crazy middle-aged wiggers coming to bust a cap in my ass?

That, or I'll do something really stupid and draw my super-secret ninja sword..... Or, you know, my concealed carry piece, flip behind some cover, and yell for someone to call the police.

THAT would really confuse them. Then you get a three-way mexican standoff between me, BATF Street Judges, and the real po-lice.

In Georgia?

Remember what comes out of the South.

Moonshine and Tobacco.
Remember what the South imports?
Firearms.

BATF agents in Georgia are about as welcome as Halloweeners at a Lone Star Picnic.

I'm just saying, the police are as likely to order everyone to drop their guns as they are to team up with BATF doughnut-munchin' thrill-seekers who're getting their jollies trying to sit on the necks of local students.

And of course, it's blatantly obvious that those BATF agents were nothing but doughnut-munchin' thrill-seekers who're getting their jollies trying to sit on the necks of local students.

A picture is worth 1,000 words, but apparently some of us read differently. :)

Dude, neither of them are wearing uniforms. A couple of middle-aged guys open the festivities by pulling their pieces and shouting at me, yes, I'm gonna run.

The smart response would've been to walk up to me and say "Uhhh, wanna take that mask off, buddy?" If they were really paranoid, they could call the campus police, who would say "yes, he's been to the ninja versus pirate event. Let him go."

No, they opted for neck-sitting.

1) We don't know that's how they "opened the festivities."

2) We have no idea why they are on his neck. I doubt it's because that's how they get their jollies, although it's definitely possible.

Sure, there's other ways to handle things. But there always is. Without knowing the details it's impossible to say to what extent their reaction was justified without using some sort of prejudicial "knowledge" of how "doughnut-munchers" usually operate.

They're BATF agents. They're like the apophrycal tale of the FBI's computer-programmer for fifteen years getting so excited that some muggers tried to mug him and trying to pull out his badge and scream "FBI! FREEZE"! that he didn't realize what he was brandishing was his photo of his girlfriend.

set aside the fact that they are officers of the law a moment. let's pretend it's *anybody* pointing a gun at you IRL... depending on what they want me to do I'm pretty likely to comply. I don't plan on out running a bullet.

If I'm surprised by a random person pointing a gun at me from a few yards away, I'm probably going to do what they want.

If they're any sort of real distance away, and I've got any sort of escape nearby that looks bulletproof (like, say, a campus building in the scenario we're looking at), there's no way in hell I'm sticking around to find out WHAT they want, if their opener involves pointing a gun at me.

Regardless of everyone's personal expected reaction to this situation, the ninja in question decided to totally flip out and run away when confronted with people we can all largely agree are not immediately visually recognizeable as police officers.

They aren't necessarily obligated to be visually identifiable... which is problematic in our era of widespread personal music device usage... verbal IDs and warnings might not be all that effective.

You're right, it's important to keep disagreements friendly, academic, and limit most discussion to those relevant to SR... but discussions are bound to rabbit trail a bit... let's sit back and enjoy the ride. <3
