It's pronounced "pew-ALL-lup."

Pew, as in the thing you'd kneel on in a church.
All, like "hall."
Lup, like "look" ending in a P (this is assuming you pronounce look "luk", not "luke")

A buddy of mine is from Baltimore, came out to Seattle. He played SR out there, so when he moved here we gave him the SR tour of the city. Then he asked where "Puyayoop" was. It took him four tries before I realized what he was talking about.

Just thought I'd share that with y'all. :spin:

Actually, Starbucks owns Aztechnology. Where did you think the Azzies learned the meaning of true evil from?

Were you listening to the local radio stations playing "lets make tourists try to say local place names on the air" again?

Isn't that "loop?" :?

Maybe you pronounce the word "look" with a shorter "o" sound over in Seattle, so that its sounds almost like "luk." Here in the Midwest, we tend to lengthen our vowels, so I might render it as just plain "lup."

:rotfl:

Why is the phrase "Look, I'm your father," running through my head right now?

And for the record, I'm from the midwest, & I pronounce it closer "luk" than "luke".

:D

I edited the pronunciation guide a little more, hopefully it'll clear that up. Yeah, we use the shorter o here.

Pull - ll + y'all + up

I'm content in my ignorance. :)

Where does the name come from?

IIRC it's from the Coastal Salish, but I don't have any idea what it means. The mighty Google might tell me if I chose to invoke it.

Update: I dunno, Google's coming up dry. About all I could confirm that the Puyallup tribe was a subset of the Salish tribes.
