This is a thread inspired by some Unknown Armies threads on RPG.net. Basically, here is a thread for a bunch of crazy ideas and rumors that may or may not be true but are the sort of things you expect to hear from Shadowrunner scuttlebutt.

I'll start us off:

You know Dunkelzahn? The whole assassination thing was staged. The Dragon decided that he'd work far better for his mission as a martyr for the cause rather than as a general President. All of the moving around of his cash merely put it in places he could access it elsewise. Right now he's currently starting a new identity from knowing where his social engineering would take society to profit from it more. God knows what the Dragon's Ultimate Goal is.

Aztlan is on its last legs. The country has been thriving on the blood magic that's its been using but it turns out that magic is a resource that runs out like anything. All their experiments have drained dry and now they need blood sacrifices to keep their spells going. The whole religion was just to facilitate that. The populous is all about their heritage but what happens when they find out its all baloney to get the hearts on the altars?

Ares was behind the New Revolution. Yes, I know everyone knows that. However, what's CRAZY is that its honestly motivated about reuniting the USA rather than money. They're building up stockpiles for their coup right now and fully intend to end the megacorp system when its done. The nukes will be flying before the Corporate Court would allow THAT though.

There's a new metahuman race being born. DEMONS. These guys are hardcore monsters and pretty much dependent on eating flesh while worshipping the Devil. There's places beyond the Astral Plane in the metamagic realms and these guys are the latest refugees. They aren't happy and are preparing to be far more subtle about their takeover than anyone else

Oh Hell. Now it's happened. The Royal Heir to Tir'Na'nOG has fallen in love with a human and wants nothing more than to broach better relations with that race. It's not helped that the one after is even more devoted to human sex. The scandal is rocking the elven world.

You know they're re-engineering the virus that created all of the metahumans? But are they going to do it to make everyone into a 'better' race or to kill off all the nonhumans?

Hey remember your last Job with me? What? You don't remember me? That's weird. We've been on a dozen Shadowruns together. Do you remember what you did on these dates? You don't recall? Weird. Cause I remember you doing A LOT of stuff

I dunno, some of that is just too far removed from 'what we know', so to speak. For one, I'm pretty sure metahumanity is not the result of a virus, and those demons sound like lightweights compared to the Shedim. But plot hooks are always helpful, so...

Hey, you hear 'bout SK's latest toy? Apparently they've been woking on a submarine that makes their AirCraft Carrier look like a paddle steamer. Project Leviathan, it's called, and not only is it the supposed to be the most powerful warship ever built, but it only takes one guy to operate the entire thing! Uses literally an army of specialised drones along with an onboard AI. But here's the REALLY interesting part, it's gone missing! Vanished into thin air, errr... water, anyway it's gone! A guy I know of mine reckons it was on it's maiden test voyage and the AI went Dues on the crew, even killed the pilot, poor slots. Trust me, if anyone knows about this, it'd be this guy I was talking to... I just hope it didn't have the ICBM's loaded when the drek hit the fan, did I mention it had ICBM's?

The reverse of the virus idea has been suggested before.

No, I said the reverse. It has been proposed that VITAS wiped out other metahuman races before they could manifest.

Here's one for ya.

Hey that Pendragon guy, was sighted off British shores the other week, with none other than, the big golden wyrm, Lofwyr! The guy that saw it said they were awful friendly, I recon he's another of Lofwyrs ally Spirits. The big L might be trying to sink his Claws in to the United Kingdom for good!

And not as far fetched as and elven prince being civil to a human.

The Zombie-Apocalypse one:

You know, I've heared that the entire Arcology debacle wasn't a rogue AI at all - it was far worse: a gengineered airborne version of HMHVV produced by one of Renraku's labs leaked to the Arc's ventilation system and began infecting people at a prodigious rate. So the corp, desperate to couver up its fumble, simply cut life-support to the who arc and killed any survivors along with the virus, disguising it as some demonic computer (y'know, technophobia is very easy to play on). The thing is, a few infected people managed to escape both the arcology AND the Renraku hit-squads; notice the new increase in ghoul activity lately in the Barrens?

---

The UFO-conspiracy one:

A friend of a cousin of one of my sister's co-worker who fought with the Huk said that when they've liberated Yumi, they've found some really freakish stuff going on, with aliens - yep, these grey little pukes with HUUUUGE black pupilless eyes and almost no mouth - using the Metahuman subjects for experimentation for goddess-knows-what end in exchange for giving Japan cutting-edge nanotechnology and spacetech.

--

And the Humanis one:

The same way that there are Immortal Elves, there are Immortal Orks, who are the real force behind the MOM, ORC, MPA, and the People's University, not to mention Goblin Rock and "Orxploitation" - and they intend to take over CalFree to establish their little own version of the Tir. They'll then raise a huge Orkish Horde and invade the rest of the world, pillaging and burning as they go. You know, if you want I could even show you stolen audio records from a sitting of the Council of Orkish Warchiefs, who lay down the plot in very detailed manner.

I thought that was just some bad soy I ate. They were only 2 feet tall. S'pose the Novacoke didn't help either.

The mandatory Mars-is-Bad stuff:

Evo has just lost communications with their Mars colony, after recieving some garbled transmittion speaking of "demonic possessions"; a few days prior to that their scientists have unearthes a huge city of unknown origions just beneath the main colony. It seems that something really bad was buried there - possibly some nasty type of spirits that are attune to Mars' sanguine manasphere.

Take note that the above included some deliberately erroneous and ridiculous stuff. These aren't necessarily plot hooks but stuff you might here on the street.

And my reading was always to treat mutation as a virus.

Ork monks practice Orkfu

Smurfs are classified as Farrie Critters and are hunted for their tendancy to turn into gold when subjected to certain alchemical treatments.

I don't want to post any spoilers here, but since no one has pointed it out, the truth about the Dunkelzahn assasnation was revealed in one of the old novels.

As much as I like the idea of the USA re-uniting, I fera that something that rosy would destroy the whole cyberpunk feel of the society. Of course, that doesn't mean that someone can't try and fail.

The whole virus thing just isn't true, but there is another "reverse" of it that could be. Someone could be engineering a virus to kill metahumans, turn them back into humans, or just have them produce human offspring.

The whole Demon metahuman race has one problem; namely, such a race would seem to be inherently evil, which totally breaks with the Shadowrun theme of metahumans being just as morally diverse as humans. If there were such a race, it should either not be metahuman, or else be the result of a virus, like vampires, or magical corruption, like Shedim or cyberzombies.

Also, I have my own idea for a new race. Since there is no race that gets bonuses to inelligence or intuition, you could make one. A sort of "braniac" race which would be physically weak, but have some mental bonuses. The only thing is figuring out how to make them more than just a cheap way to make a good hacker or mage, the way most face characters are elves.

Any chance of you letting me know which book that is in, it is something I would really like to read.

Or you could just spoil it....

1. Thanks.

2. Doom 2099 in Marvel Comics showed how the USA reuniting was a lot more Cyberpunk than the reverse. It would also get rid of the embarrassment that is the Sioux nation (I don't feel comfortable with the Indiansploitation of the setting).

But yes, Doctor Doom 2099 blows up Congress and institutes martial law across the United States while recruiting a bunch of fascists and psychopaths into his armies. It was very morally ambigious because while the strong central government was weakening Corporate Power in the setting, it also was a fascist government that kidnapped people in the middle of the night and was all about black helicopters and oppression.

I think it could be very good for the feel of Cyberpunk. Especially if the Strong Central Government is just another potential enemy.

3. I don't think that Shadowrun really goes with that feel honestly. As Vampire the Masquerade, Vampires are still "pure evil" but can be extremely interesting characters in their own right despite being utter bastards. Also, I think that these monsters from space would be diluted and there's nothing wrong with having most of the world in shades of gray while other sides being utterly black. I mean the Hive Spirits aren't ANYONE's friends after all.

However, Demons as a new race could also be like Demon The fallen. Some Demons are seeking redemption, some don't care about destroying all mankind, and plenty are just glad to be out of hell.

More Rumors

You know Damien Knight? The big muckity muck from Ares that came from nowhere? Here's a newsflash. He doesn't exist. He's a complete fabrication of an AI that walks around wearing a robotic body and braindead corpses that he animates with a cybernetic hookup. It's easy to know why a computer would want to rule the world but why exactly is he doing all the pro-US business?

Magic doesn't exist. What? You don't believe me. It turns out that all the metahuman races are really the product of a nanotechnology experiment gone horribly wrong. The Dragons are the people behind it. It turns out they're the original scientists that have given themselves seemingly immortal and indestructible bodies. The Elves that think they remember times past? Fabrications. Magic is just access to the nanotech that's everywhere now....including the subsconcious server that's the astral. They've been profiting from the chaos ever since.

The whole Native American Rebellion? Seems like such a sweet story of revenge don't it? Sadly, its all a pack of lies. The camps weren't there to destroy Native Americans but were based around massive genetic research and cloning projects meant to prepare the way for the return of magic. Just who set them up though? Who knew it was coming? Whose running the show in their territories anyway? Some whisper there's a group called the Nunnehi...

The Corporates aren't the biggest animals on the food chain. In the Corporate Court there's an alliance of the biggest Corporate leaders, Government Agents, and political action movers and shakers. The Illuminati. Oh, laugh all you want. It's a group that arranged all the chaos of humanity's fall so they could pick up the pieces. They did their job too well and and don't wield as much influence as they think they should...why they're ready to destroy EVERYTHING in their next move

You're in for it now buddy. A group of sub-par Shadowrunners have stolen your identities and been running missions that screwed over the Corps and government both before hoisting the blame on you. They've got it down so well that your own mother might not know the difference....too bad they're nowhere to be found and you are

There's a new drug on the scene. It kills usually on the first take but those who survive gain magical powers. The number of corpses filling up as its spread around is going crazy. Who would make such a lethal concotion and whose crazy enough to let it spread around?

The Police are getting re-armed by Ares corporation while they're pushing for more Draconian measures with their government support. Tanks, explosions, and license to kill on sight. Is Ares just tring to be helpful or have they lost their minds?

Rumors heard on the street always tend to be a blend of some truth, half-truths and outright wild-tales; except for the Humanis one (which is a deliberate piece of racist slander), most are simply wild rumors that you ARE going to hear on the streets and in tabloids.
