Yeah that'd be good. But then some bugger will just come along and hijack it to talk about something unrelated...  :P

...yeah, you're right. Someone will start talking about mutant ninja teenage girl adepts, Drop Bears or NERPS. :silly:

Just a note that nothing prevents you from creating a new thread with the same name. The old one will die of disuse if you request folks stop posting here. =)

I do not consider SR SF. SF once was a way to criticize society. Then Star Trek and Star Wars came, both considered SF by the public press because of the futuristic setting. However, they have nothing in common with the former SF.

Mwr?

Okay, I agree with you on the Star Wars thing, but Star Trek? Are you feeling okay? Great jumpin' Jehosephat, Episodes dealt with racism, prejudice, social stratification, bending to governmental powers, morality, and a number of other issues. Christ on a stick, the show had the first interracial kiss broadcast on US television. No less than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. asked Nichelle Nichols to stay on the show because she was something new to the culture: a role-model for young black girls. "City on the Edge of Forever" won the Hugo award; that's a sci-fi award the predates your version of new sci-fi.

As for Shadowrun, if you think that racism, poverty, corporatism, and hate are no longer issues in society, then yes, you're right.

Shadowrun always makes me think of "1984". It's not so much Sci-Fi as it is a Dystopian future.

Wow, calm down, I do not want you harm.
The fact is that you can interpret a lot. Look, I am currently watching "About a boy", a movie that is not meant to be critical. However it does not take much to think "hey, there is something behind this scene. This is obviously pointing at..." or similar.
Called overinterpretation.
Just because there is a half site in the core book dedicated to racism does not mean that Shadowrun is meant to be critical. They just wanted to create a round, believable world. Racism is part of that, especially with the oddest freaks suddenly popping up on earth.
Marcus in "About a boy" is harrassed by his classmates. Not because the movie(or, originally, the novel) is meant to be critical, but because it would seem weird if he did not, since he is totally different from his classmates.
Just as it would be weird that elves, orcs and trolls would be welcomed with open arms.

I do not know much about Star Trek, I saw around 10 episodes and everytime it was pure action, accompanied by fantastic oddities, those phazers, borgs, and what not.
Maybe I got a wrong image.

yeah, before Star Wars and Star Trek, we lived in a golden age of such searing social commentary sci-fi as Buck Rogers and Sin in Space. back in those days, science fiction was serious business!

This is it, guys and girls. The ultimately best novel ever written. I can judge from the cover. Why bother with writing more literature, if the best is out?
