If it's A, then how does a summoned spirit that goes free manage to stick around?

Maybe, It could posses you for the 30 minutes around sunset and sunrise.

Raising contact level might mean letting it borrow your body for a week.

Hmm. Well, I've got my SR3 books out now, and I'm comparing them to SR4 and refreshing my memory about Free Spirits and such.

Looks to me like the deal is:

SR3, core: An uncontrolled nature spirit departs to its metaplane. An uncontrolled elemental departs if it makes a Force (6) test; otherwise, it attacks.

SR3, MitS: An uncontrolled nature spirit becomes a Free Spirit if it makes a Force (6) test (Force (4) if a Spirit of Man); otherwise, it departs to its metaplane. An uncontrolled elemental becomes a Free Spirit if it makes a Force (6) test (Force (4) if it had been bound for several weeks in a row); otherwise, it attacks.

SR4: A spirit that becomes uncontrolled during a Summoning attempt departs to its home metaplane. A spirit that becomes uncontrolled during a Binding attempt (a distinction that didn't exist in SR3) departs if its Force is less than half the conjurer's Magic; otherwise, it attacks.

SR4 doesn't really specify, but I assume that if a spirit becomes uncontrolled during a binding, attacks the magician, and KILLS him...the spirit then departs.

MitS specifically notes that spirits (other than Free Spirits) aren't believed to be able to spontaneously manifest. We probably won't know until Street Magic whether that's still the way things work.

Anyway, given all of that, I think the answer is probably something like: Only Free Spirits can stay indefinitely, or move between metaplanes and the physical without being summoned. However, uncontrolled spirits are able to stay for 'a while' (the next sunrise or sunset would probably be a good guideline?) to get their revenge before they leave.
