I read the first Texas thread and it was pretty funny. How can you complain about the realism involved in a country owned by a corporation and run by blood mages taking over a state (even a really big one)? Texas has a large Christian population, and they were almost universally shafted when it came to magic, especially compared to the NAN and Aztlan. At that point in time there were relatively few defenses in place for the invisible flying street sam, and a force 8 blood spirit would way laste to the countryside.
It would be even weirder if Tonga, Djibouti, and Dan Marino were to take over the world. The rebel battlecry could be Laces Out and the opposition party's motto would be Dan Marino should die of gonnarhea and rot in hell. :) |

No kidding :P I gave a buddy of mine, fresh in from Maryland, the Shadowrun tour of Seattle. After a while of pointing out things like "Yeah, here's where they demolished hundreds of buildings and dozens of city blocks to set up a giant friggin pyramid," he just started laughing every time we pointed out something new. I mean, seriously... "Council Island?" I grew up on Mercer Island, and honestly can't imagine why, if you wanted to create some sort of representative seat of a government/nature preserve, you'd pick a place that is covered in housing on practically every single horizontal surface and some of the vertical ones. Mass demolition would be required :P I play SR, I like their Seattle, and I go along with most of the bizarre metaplot stuff (including it actually being Council Island in my games :P ). If you don't like something, ignore it and make up your own version. |

Here's my 2 nuyens (or should I say my 2 new-francs :P ) :
1- I think stereotypes are a VERY important part in rpgs so I think Quebec deserves this kind of treatment... I totally dig the nation as one of haters... 2 - If you want to bash a setting for poor researches, have a look at the Free Nation of Quebec from Rifts, I've never seen such a "flavourless" sourcebook... 3 - You have to give credit to some researches. One example would be the mayor of Quebec City, Andree Boucher III (If I correctly remember...). This lovely lady is an ork. Andree Boucher was actually an active politician a few years ago... and a really ugly one... pretty funny her descendant is actually an ork :). 4 - If I had one thing to change, I would make the nation very welcoming to all races but keep the nation as pro-French at all cost. As stated before, in the sixth world racism is not about colour anymore... but to keep the flavour of the place you would need to keep the ethnocentrism of the nation... so French troll = no problem; English Troll = get out of here! 5 - About the New-franc debate, Quebec still as strong ties with France and a lot of people are trying to make the place like a New-France. Just look at the numerous similar movements related to the non-interventionism of religion in the government (laïcité à la française) as well as recent gifts between the 2 nations and some attempts to separate different communities using a French template... My only pet peeve here is that there's no mimes in Quebec and we don't wear berets eating baguette lol (the two nations are very similar but also very different...) 6 - I agree totally about the "Cross Applied Technology" being silly. It would need a French name because it would be considered illegal due to strict pro-French laws... But there's nothing against having a French name in Quebec and an English name in the ROUCAS (Rest of UCAS for those who get it ;) ) So "Les Technologies Appliquees Cross" sounds perfectly good to me... As for having a CEO with an English name, it wouldn't be the first time corporate power is held by anglos in "La Belle Province"... 7 - I think there is some kind of irony about Quebec in the 6th world: A conquered nation (Quebec), under the domination of a more powerful force (the anglos) in the past, deprived of it's freedom and rights, is now doing the same thing once it is independent and sovereign... plus ca change, plus c'est pareil... 8 - A quick note about those "use your spell check" posts. There might be people here whose first language is not English (like me! I'm sure you can tell lol) but It does not give you the right to be rude about it. We`re doing a lot of efforts with this second language but we`re not perfect... Please bash elves, not French people :D Peace everyone! Crossfire P.S. I am a quebecois currently in "exile" in (English) Manitoba and I find it quite funny to bring elements from my "own and native land" in the games I play. I was thinking of playing a mildly racist bounty hunter from Quebec one day... when are you starting you next campaign Dog? I just wish I was playing that character during your last Harlequin session :D God I would have loved to hunt those elves :P. |

And it especially helps for poor spellers and typists in general. One American DSer in particular comes to mind as being in desperate need of a spellchecker. How that woman does it is nothing short of amazing. |

Nah, it would have failed in a lot of places. For example, the spell checker doesn't recognize the words Shadowrun or metahumans. :)
The biggest thing to me (what I noticed right off and had to fight not to point out) is that "researches" is not the plural of "research." Simply saying "do research" is plenty. Now to scurry off and read that second Texas thread. :) |

Third person singular present tense of "searching again." "Joe searches the area, and if he doesn't find what he's after the first time, he researches it." I didn't say it was good, just pointing out the fallibility of spell check. Each word by itself is a real word. They just don't make sense together. (Edit: okay, so I missed "writting" and "biaised" and a couple of others. Mia Culpa. "i'm am hopping too right more good to." :D ) BTW, I'm visiting Quebec Light (Montreal) in a couple of weeks. Ooh, culture! Anybody wanna suggest something SRish that I might wanna see? |

"He researches alzheimer's for a living" also works without resorting to the "re" prefix whose primary use is racking up big scores at Boggle and Scrabble. ;) I wasn't saying that researches isn't a word, just that it doesn't mean what it was intended to mean.

And a lot of it could very well have been like Crimson Skies - which has a map that looks an awful lot like the SR map. "Screw logic, but this is fucking cool." I think it's rather presumptuous and, well frankly, stupid to ASSume that the devs didn't do their research in the several years they spent designing the rulebook and the first year's/year and half's worth of sourcebooks and adventures. |

Come to think of it those thrice-damned prepositions always screwed me on my French language tests. I ought to review them along with le subjonctif. Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it! Let's see if I've still got my past tenses in order. Quand j'etais AU Quebec, j'aurais fait les recherches, mais un communiste m'a arrete. (I want to say, "When I was in Quebec, I had been doing research, but a communist stopped me.") I might have made some mistakes here because I'm being more chronologically precise and at the same time my last French lesson was like 3 years ago. (Edited once for a mistake already.) Late to the discusion, maybe this has been covered but I don't really see it.
Greatly depends on what part of the province you are talking about, although it isn't a hard and fast rule going on geographic lines. This is because the PQ has a bit of a split personality. Overall yes, the PQ has quite socialist policies. But it has, similar to the NDP in Saskatchewan but for different reasons, a base that cuts deep across what is normally considered the left-right axis. There is an "urban PQ" and a "backwoods PQ", and they are indeed different aspects of the party. Less polite people might refer to it as "redneck communism". :) So dismissing the "conservative", and I'd argue to some degree the "isolationist" label, out-of-hand is itself vastly oversimplifying. |
