I adored Batman Begins and was really looking forward to the new supes flick.
Saw it last night, and I'm sorry to say I was so disappointed.

The beginning seemed muddled and took an age to get going. The consequences of supes being away for so long were hardly touched upon (except for how Lois felt about it).
The first major action scene was indeed a hoot, but I spent the rest of the film hoping and waiting, in vain, for a finale to match it. It plodded. I got bored for goodness sake (and I didn't even get bored watching Garden State or The Straight Story).
Somehow I couldn't bring myself to care one iota about Lois Lane or her new family. Lex Luthor and his schemes never seemed like a serious threat until the tremors were hitting Metropolis, and then supes seemed to deal with all that with ridiculous ease, giving no sense of being overwhelmed nor mourning that he couldn't do more.
The closest thing to a climax, with supes undoing Luthor's work, seemed to wrap things up and restore the status quo far too easily, but worse it really made no sense that supes could even do what he did.

And yet... my girlfriend loved it. We came back home and she wanted to watch the 1978 Donner original, so we did. And it was bizarre.
All the best lines and gags from the film are pinched outright from the Donner film. The lectures about air safety and smoking, Luthor's speech about land ownership and the 'You know what my mother used to say to me? / Get out?' line. The clumsiness in the revolving door. And more.

I didn't hate it. Routh was great. The action (what little there was) was great. But it just felt like an uncomfortable compromise between being a sequel and a remake, and the pacing was, IMO, way off. This should have been a flat-out reinvention. There was altogether too much homage to Donner's film, and that I think is where it went wrong for me.

Bottom line: if you haven't seen it, then go ahead and do so. But don't get your expectations up too high. You might enjoy it more that way.

Ahhh... just seen it!

Very good movie. I only wish Lex Luthor hadn't been bidimensional in the end (early on, he's superb). This has nothing to do with Spacey (who was excellent), but with the script.

I wonder... how long until they pull a World's Finest? They have both franchises active, and a Batman vs Joker movie is almost certain. After that, you get to do another Supes movie (without Luthor, I presume), and then... World's Finest?
