OH. MY. GOD.

You sound like Kenny - one of my players of old...

He'd bring his rock to the gaming table.

It had a face on it.

It was called Peter Rock!

Leave my cookie out of this! :P

The emergence of Obsidimen could give the phrase pet rocks a whole new meaning. :D

Sounds like you been playing D&D lately, and using the Psionics Hand Book too. Because in D&D psions have something like a familiar that is called a psicrystal and is often referred to as pet rock. I know this because that is what character class (ewww I said character class on dumpshock), when ever I play D&D with my group.

Hey hey hey. Psionicists are cool; I'll play in any class-based game that has a decent psionicist class. Still irked that in Shadowrun psionicists are just people with their heads up their arses.

In my opinion, Psionics is one of the worst things about D&D. They have not, do not, nor will they ever have a place in any of my games.

Among other things like how they are implimented, basically I've never thought they were necessary, or even warranted, given the two already existing Magic systems (Cleric and Mage) already included in the game.

I like them for a few reasons. First is flat-out cool factor, second is the fact that they operate off of a different system than Mages/Priests (the PSP system) allowing them greater versatility at the cost perhaps of total powers/spells per day. Then is the fact that they had a lot of potentially useful powers that could not be replicated with spells from either other system (short of doing stupid things with a Wish or Limited Wish).
Also, they seem a lot more diverse to me than mages/priests. I've found that, with certain variations, most mages/priests generally take the same routes in life, while Psionicists are all over the friggin' place.

Psionics can be cool, but I don't think they really fit into the generic D&D game... at least not in any game I've ever run or played in (which doesn't mean that they haven't been in the game anyway on a few occasions... just that they fit in like an ork ganger at a Humanis rally). On top of that, the D&D rules for psionics kinda sucked... at least up through 2nd Edition. I haven't played 3rd, and, from what I've seen of it, don't think I really want to.

Psionics would fit into Shadowrun much better, but as pointed out, the SR rules for it kinda suck, too.

The 2E rules for psionics were worthless, yes. But they actually put some effort into the 3E version. You're essentially playing a Final Fantasy mage with them now, where Power Points = MP.

Now, there used to be a Shadowrun topic here somewhere...
