...of course, if you are in the 'El Cheapo" mode there is always Steve Jackson's Cardboard Heroes ($24.95 for 400 figures + accessories from various periods). As GM I find these are very useful when you ned a lot of grunts & don't want to shell out $100s to get a sizable "army" of NPC figures and they still look better than dice, poker chips, M&Ms, or coins (though the M&Ms are quite tasty).

So now I'm back on a mini kick after just getting a rhythm down while making chainmail, thanks guys :P

So anyways I just found this company and they have some pretty spiffy stuff I haven't seen anywhere else as well as some of the more obscure lines like Thugs and Hasslefree.

I used to play DnD a LOT - Me and my buddies never took the Hex-board off the diningroom table for three solid years! - and so I've painted many figs in my time...THE best ones I've found so far have been from Rackham

It's a shame they don't have a Shadowrun line. But, it might be worth putting together some kinda petition here at Dumpshock...something to show Rackham. 'Ya know?

Rackham does make some neat stuff, but it's not what I'd call the best stuff out there. There are so many lines with so many sculptors out there that you can pretty much find anything you want, at any level of realism you want. To me, the Rackam stuff looks too cartoon/anime-ish.

For fantasy "perfection", I don't think there's much that beats the stuff that Tom Meir sculpts. https://www.thunderboltmountain.com/index.php

I know, it's all subjective. But just check out his wood elves and Arthurians. Totally whoop ass.

The figures my old group used to use were 1/72 scale military. That's an inch tall, slightly smaller than 25mm (which has gotten bigger and bigger over the years, for whatever reason). They're plastic, you can paint them, they come about 50 to a box for around 8 bucks, and they make them for any time period you can think of. They are used primarily in historical wargames, so that covers any time period with a war in it. In addition to the 1/72 scale minis, my local dollar store had baggies of the plastic Army men that were the same size, though less detailed. I picked up the four colors they had of these (green, yellow, gray and tan) to fill out the schmoe rosters.

Yup, definitely a good route to go when you're using lots of figs. I generally don't use figs for shmoes, we just throw out dice of a color that nobody is using.

For D&D, I found a site that has dl'able counters that are 1x1". They have pictures of the more common fantasy figs. For large creatures, the counter is the proper size, etc. If you've got Photoshop, he gives instructions for making your own too. http://dndcounters.tripod.com/
