QUOTE (venenum)
Wording question: would the familiar ordeal cost you the karma to make the ally spirit or is that inclueded in the initation cost.

Uh bad wording on my part, stated it wrong. I meant to say it the other way around. Initiatin in cluded in ally spirit cost. Probably not. So this ordeal is only good when you have rediculese amounts of karma. or have a really high inatiation grade, like 7. it cost 8 karma to make a force one ally spirit. and the minimum cost for a rank one ination is 8 karma. What a pointless ordeal until later.

Synner explained it earlier. It's effectively a skill to take exisiting formulae and concepts and apply them to another tradition. Or something like that. Here you go:
QUOTE (Synner)
Arcana is indeed an active skill and it represents the physical and ritualistic translation of magical formula (all types of formulas) - to find out exactly what it does you'll need the book but you're on the right track. Perhaps the best parallel I can make is that it relates to Magical Theory Knowledge skill in the same way as (vehicle type) Mechanic skills relate to the Engineering Knowledge skill.

I expect that Emo will retconn our mage's backstory to correspond with the Street Magic fluff. Before SM came out, Vranton was envisioned as a "Chaos mage" - a magical practicioner who primarily uses his magic to subvert societal order. His tradition allows him to summon special "Chaos spirits," which compensate for their relatively poor attributes with some sooper-dooper abilities - they can send targets into uncontrollable panics, or permanently rearrange a target's bodily tissues.

The new fluff suggests that Vranton is in fact more of a Toxic mage than a Chaos mage: SM's Chaos Magic (p. 37) is radically different from Emo's, but the description of the Havoc (p. 141) sounds almost exactly like Vranton. The only difference between Vranton and the typical Havoc lies in the scope of their respective goals: Havocs tend to pursue "campaigns of mass murder or targeted assassination," but Vranton doesn't seem to follow any specific or organized "master plan" in his efforts to spread chaos. If the opportunity to easily screw things up presents itself, he'll take it, but it seems he'll only stick with something for as long as it amuses him.

However, I do not expect Emo will retconn the Chaos spirits out of our campaign. To his mind, they are far too awesome. :D

The name chaos mage is because they don't subscribe to an ordered set of trappings and traditions, so rather than order they use chaos. Plus calling it Chaos pisses off the straight laced occultist. Chaos magic is a RL magical practice that basically says the trappings don't matter as long as they work you, if you believe in magic in the real world and look at it sensibly you'll see that most traditions of magic seem to work equally despite many of them saying this is the right and only way. Hence the Chaos magic thing. The warhammer inspired chaos mage (more like vranton) are just silly.
