For a while now I have seen a lot of talk about character creation. What is the best this or that. How do you do one thing or another. I would like to propose an idea. A contest to see who and what can make the best character. All rules would be in and there would be several areas. The ones I can think of the top of my head are...

Best:

Best Street Samurai (Armed)

Best Street Samurai (Unarmed)

Best Hermatic Mage

Best Shaman

Best Decker

Best Rigger

If anyone else can think of other categories go ahead and post them. The rules are simple, the point system would be used. You get 125 points, and all the standard rules from BBB and the companion apply. A separate thread will be used for the characters to keep the clutter down if there’s enough interest in this thread. So shoot away, let me know what you think if this is a good idea/bad idea.

stating what optional rules apply, and what "suggestions" for character creation are enforced matters a whole lot.

Well I would say to keep it simple, only the standard rules apply, IE character creation from the BBB and SR companion. So no optional rules.

So, you mean the Shadowrun Companion is available. So we can use the point system then if we want.

123 points then I assume?

This is a strait excersie in number crunching. But only if theres enough interest. However, to judge the character properly we will have to know what the character is, so a paragraph on what the character is will suffice.

Let me clarify something, you must use the point system and you get 125 points to make this character.

Ok thanks. You already stated those two facts though and if someone is careless enough to not read the rules all the way through, they should be disqualified.

I could understand if they were spoken, but this is text. It's already written down and doesn't need to be repeated.

Do what you can with the rules stated. If you think the "best" character means munchkin then submit it.

You'd need to be more specific than "Best Hermatic Mage" and the like, best at what? Combat (close/urban or ranged, versus mundane or magical opposition)? Investigation? Recon? Fun to play?

I'd find it difficult to create a "best" anything as judging can be so subjective.

Maybe a better idea, considering the idea came from people stating what different character types should take to be the best, is to list the needed things for each of those types. You know, like the Trauma Dampener for the Mage types, the Cyberleg for the Rigger type, the Astral spells for the Astral type, the best choice of Adept powers, etc, etc.

Anyhows, a direct answer to your question, No, I wouldn't submit my character(s).

You forgot adepts :P

There's other things that need to be considered as well, aside from the subjectivity of just saying "best". Any availability limits? Cultured bioware/bioware in general/nanotech allowed?

Personally though, I've always thought the best character was the one you had the most fun playing.

Characters appear to be restricted to just the BBB and SR3C, so no cyberware above alphaware or from anything but the main book, and no bioware at all. It's an interesting challenge, but my main question is whether the characters should be specialists or well rounded characters. They're completely different builds, after all.

Heh, this is a very cool idea Shadow. My question is, what is the best way to submit these characters? Are we all going to have a look and debate it or are you going to be the final arbiter?

Since this is so subjective, and there can be so many criteria for the different character types, maybe it shouldn't be a contest, but sort of a repository, where people could submit their characters and we could all just compare and contrast. It might be a good resource for quicky NPCs and such...

Actually I didn't. I listed two variations of the street Sam, armed and unarmed. If you feel an Adept would fit the roll then go for it. I did say I wasn't sure if this was all the catagories but it is the best ones I could think of.

Your right, best is very subjective. So I want you to submit the very best mage you can. I want you to define 'best'. If I told you to submit the best combat mage I would get 50 characters that were about the same. Use your best judgement on what you think is the best.

So I think there is enough interest here to play this out. So character submission starts now. I will start another thread so as not to clutter this one. Essentially just post your character in the thread along with a paragraph that describes him or her.

Xon2000, I say this is a contest because I want people to build the best characters possible. Think of this as a tactical excersise.

I will keep the thread open for a couple of weeks and then take the top 10 characters, put them in a poll and let the SR community judge the 'best of the best'. Continue to post sugestions and comments here. Leave the other thred just for characters.
