from my understanding, the shaped charges they're using are actually mines they acquired elsewhere. they're not, so far as i've heard, actually producing any advanced explosives. as for the technical competence of our forces, well... i can't, unfortunately, say there's anything in my experience that says you're wrong on that one.

regardless, it seems more like good guerilla warfare than advanced technology--that, and really piss-poor intel on our part. ever notice how few Iraqi bystanders get smeared when bombs go off under US hummers? that means that all the potential bystanders know when and where the bomb's going to go off. so they make sure they're not standing by it. that's really, really bad for us.

The "they killed them with WHAT?" stuff that tends to be dump trucks with 400 pounds of C4.

That's "advanced", at least according to the MOAB lovefest.

Well, it's helped in part by the fact that there's usually a US hummer between the bystanders and the bomb, but that probably doesn't explain all of it.

Kage, in your ideal world, do people fulfill their promises?

In my ideal world, people would probably make far fewer promises than they do. I know I try to avoid it.

This weekend 33 police recruits were killed when a bomb exploded while they'd waited in front of police station. 56 people were injured.
That are news I read nearly everyday, so imo the terrorists don't care too much about warning bystanders or targetting US troops only.

According to some reports I've seen on TV, big parts of the police and army forces sympathatizes with the terrorists. But in the above example you're right.

Just remember to take the TV reports with a huge grain of salt. It isnt really news anymore, its more like propoganda from a 3rd party.

Sure (hey, we all know that the TV is lying thanks to our long-time SR experience :D ), but it were different reports on CNN (ahh...ok), BBC and two german news channels. The details may vary, but I think the reports show the big picture: neither iraqi police nor army are as trustworthy as the US wants/ needs them.

i wouldn't be surprised if large portions of the police and armed forces don't like the US, which in this particular time and place equates with sympathizing with the insurgents. regardless, the organizations they're joining exist to support the government that the US is trying to set up; therefore, they'll be a target of the insurgents. you wanna feel bad for guys who die for their country, feel bad for those poor bastards. they've got a choice between letting their families starve to death, or signing on to support a government they don't want to support--and then getting blown up for their troubles, sometimes before they even swear the oath.

there's a lot to be said about Iraq, the choices that led to the current situation, and the few remaining options we have for getting out of it. but this is a board for discussing SR, so i'm going to do that for at least the next post or two.

Oh I think the situation in modern-day Iraq can be found in SR canon as well, just think of occupied Poland.

Some of the shaped charges are from pre-war stocks, others are manufactured either by terrorists out of country and brought in or the terrorists themselves have moved in country. Little of both really.

Oh and when we turn the corner into a normally crowded market and see that the only inhabitants are tumbleweeds ALL the vehicles stop and we find another route. The attacks that damage us most are iraqis planting bombs before we roll in. The ones that kill IPs and civilians are Vehicle borne bombs. Those dont give as much warning.

ANYWAY to give an idea for shadowrun! (an odd topic I know)

Terrafirst bomb manufacturers have found a small, lightweight bomb that will crack any armored car, and Ares wants it

Northern CalFree is always a big area for infighting, escort a convoy of Calhots from a smugglers den in CalFree up to Seattle. The vehicles are hit and disabled by terrorists, and you need to extract them (always the tough part, my PCs will hate me, especially anyone playing a goody-two shoes)

Normal B&E, task complete even, except the Sons of Sauron have just driven a dumptruck filled with C-12 into the compound and detonated it bringing 18 kinds of hell down on the area. Now get out alive. Oh and convince Johnsons that the damage wasnt your fault.
