Hiya,

Just a quick news update that new users now have to be manually approved by the admins before they can start posting -- this is to help ward off the recent invasion of spambots.

The goal is to approve all valid-user registrations within 24 hours.

Now, it's been three years since I registered, so I don't rightly recall...

Do you guys have a Captcha activated? Might be that could help stem it off a little bit if you don't.

No, no Captcha, and every effort is being spent /not/ to modify the existing board software anymore, since it's old and either needs hugely upgrading or replacing in general anyway.

Is that the little number/letter combination thing that needs to be manually entered?

QUOTE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha)
A CAPTCHA (an acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart", trademarked by Carnegie Mellon University) is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to determine whether or not the user is human. The term was coined in 2000 by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, Nicholas J. Hopper of Carnegie Mellon University, and John Langford of IBM. A common type of CAPTCHA requires that the user type the letters of a distorted image, sometimes with the addition of an obscured sequence of letters or digits that appears on the screen. Because the test is administered by a computer, in contrast to the standard Turing test that is administered by a human, a CAPTCHA is sometimes described as a reverse Turing test. This term is ambiguous because it could also mean a Turing test in which the participants are both attempting to prove they are the computer.

It might be worthwhile to look into upgrades and migration systems, so as to not lose any posts and keep any functionality that is still here now.

Times, they are a-changin'.

At some point there is going to be a wholesale change to new or updated software, but I'm not spending my time modifying the current version.

Fair enough. I'm sure there are Captchas for this version, but if it's only as a mod, then testing et al would take up too much time as compared to having it (hopefully) included in the new version when you guys get around to upgrading.
