Not necessarily directed to you, as a number of people have been having the multi-post problem.
I have found that the way to avoid the issue is whenever an error occurs, to check the appropriate forum first to see whether the post went through despite the error (about 95% of mine actually do go through) before hitting the refresh button or reposting. |

Ditto.
And nifty article. ;) I still don't understand the idea of using incredibly sticky stuff to climb, though. I know it works, because things do it. But what makes the distinction between "Lifting my foot to move it" and "About to fall"? How do you make it stick when you want, but release when you want? Craziness. |

Climbing walls, ceilings, whatnot... Man, the extreme-sport guys and freerunners/parkour people will love this.
As do I. :) EDIT: I also foresee a number of freak accidents featuring fat, falling people in Spider-Man suits. |

which explanation do you want? biological motions related to standard movement? or displacement of kinetic/potential energy? |

Don't know how much of the article you guys read...but there was also a brief mention of how this technology could be applied to the creation of synthetic muscle fiber...
Muscle replacements anyone? |

Both! Because I suspect that geckos and the like simply flex their bits in some way to release them. Assuming that's the case, how do you apply that to non-sentient stuff? |

Actually, the parkour people will probably hate it; parkour is about the potential of just the human body, and artificial aids would be considered taboo. Hell, people get made fun of for wearing normal gloves in parkour. Of course, few traceurs seriously suggest that people don't wear shoes, and often compare which ones are better, so maybe there's a bit of hypocrisy there. In whichever way the hypocrisy flows, I'll be getting myself a set of these gloves as soon as they are a price I can afford. |

I foresee a split in the Parkour subculture. I will definately get myself a pair of those gloves though. Preferrably some shoes and kneepads as well.
As for muscle replacement/enhancement, well, as long as it's cheap and won't require maintenance... Which will never happen... |

What, ANOTHER ONE? Damn, this will be hard to keep strait. Flips / no flips. Herbertiste generalist vs. Specialization in passing obstacles. Freerunning vs. parkour, davide belle vs. Sebastian Foucan, Parkour.net vs. urban freeflow. Now gecko gloves vs bare handed. Damn, it's only a matter of time before we start shooting each other in turf wars.
Thank god I'm the only Traceur in my city. |

Running alone is boring.
Running with some crazy guy with the opposite opinions shooting at you... I don't think I'd prefer that, actually... Anyway, long live gecko tape. |

Well, It's hard to do vaults and wallclimbing with a gun, so they probably can't follow me.

Have you seen Casino Royale? Bond doesn't need to do vaulting and wallclimbing to keep up with the guy. ;-)

Thats because he has narrative imperative. He has to catch the guy, otherwise he looks like a fuckup and the story either ends, or we lose interest because the main character sucks.
If we are going to use action movie logic, than a trio of 12 year old suburb brats with 6 months of karate classes can wipe out a whole Ninja clan and come back for the sequel. Back on topic, my wife had a great suggestion of putting a bit of this on the front of my shoe's sole, on that tip that rolls up the front. How much would you pay for those gloves and the shoes? If it works as advertised, I'd drop 200 on a pair, easy. Hell, I could be talked into five hundred. For reference, that's more than I paid for my last car. Which I wouldn't need anymore, since taking the bus just got a whole lot less expensive. Also, no more elevator to the top floor. My office would just have to leave the window open. |

I'd drop $500.
Which is far less than I'd have to pay for a car anyway... |

It makes me wonder though how well it -actually- handles surfaces though. I mean ok relatively clean flat surfaces = GO!
But what about say.. a natural rock face? How about something that has a great deal of grime and dirt? Also I'm not so sure about their idea of stick on armor plating would actually work as well as they think. Since the stuff would have to remain attached through some pretty brutal wear. I mean if it were a patch on a tank it would have to: A) Stick over an allready dirt/scorched surface. B) Be able to stay on under all sorts of weather conditions, heavy rain, heavy snow, sandstorm etc C) Remain attached while the vehicle is in motion, gets hit etc. It's of very minimal use if the tank gets pinged on the side and the plate goes flying off D) Doesnt simply get shaken loose from the vibrations caused both by the engine, and the motion of the vehicle. Also if it really does stick that well and through all those sorts of conditions it oculd be abit of a pain to pry solid metal plating off again. Either way I declare it Nifty! |
