But on the flip side, sometimes they have had 3-4 hours, which the hacker could have done some probing, spent more time on legwork, but didn't.  It goes both ways.

Hackers have to do legwork?

But then, all your examples seem pretty special cases. The norm should be that you ahve several days to prepare a run. everything else is bad planning by the Johnsonn and should result in much more money offered.

Norm...well that is obviously subjective and dependent on the specific GM and campaign. I understand where you are coming from, but I thing a good-planning Johnson is one that has "his" plan prepared and then close to the last minute, gets the hired runners into the loop.

In my mind, the longer the runners are out there knowing the details of the job, the more time there is to have the job compromised and the run jeopardized.

The way I view runners is they should be masters of improvisation, getting the bare minimum in detail and objectives, but still expected to get the job done. That is why they get paid so much...and for my campaigns, that is the norm, not giving the runners several days before each run to plan and prepare.

My players like that style, so that is what I continue to give them...
