I was wondering how you would stat out a jaialai - pronounced "high-lie" - glove-basket ("xistera" in Basque, "cesta-punta" in Spanish). These baskets are worn on the wrist and used to play a game popular in Spain and Latin-American Countries. The balls (125 to 140 grams) can be launched at 300 kph (~185 mph) by an experienced player. I couldn't help but think "Exotic Ranged Weapon" for a character idea I have rolling around in my head.

Don't worry Jeremiah Legacy, it's not for your game. ;)

(Please see article here for more information if you are not familiar with the game.)

I would stat them like any other melee weapon (str/2 + something) but they are ranged. You would need to define it's effective ranges. The damage should be stun but give it a high number so it is likely to wrap around fairly quickly. Unfortunately shadowrun doesn't deal with bashing damage very well so it would be stun.

I know very little about it (so if I can remember to I'll follow that link later), but I've always found jaialai fascinating. One of the reasons is that the first time I saw it, the announcer just happened to mention how deadly the ball could be. :)

You know.. I dont know why I didnt think of this sooner, since it's sorta like Lacross... and spear launchers...

What would be the practical side effects for using something like that to toss grenades?

Reminds me of hurling. Nothing like a sport where you can hit anyone who has the ball, just had the ball, or is suspected of having the ball in the near future.

...yeah there was a brief writeup of Hurling in the old TT sourcebook. Was pretty much the national pastime there. One of the few redeeming qualities of that misbegotten nation.

Actually have watched some Irish matches on FS International. Incredibly brutal sport, makes the NFL look like flag football. Then there is Aussie Rules Football - full contact, tackling & all without helmets or pads or apparent rules. I could see how both of these might have an attraction in the SR world. Jaialai is also pretty wicked from what I've seen. I understand people have been seriously injured and even died from being hit by the ball.

There was actually a GI Joe action figure (well, he was a Cobra operative, but released under the brand name) that used a high-tech version of the jailai launcher to throw both kinetic energy weapons and grenades to great effect and at great range. Can't remeber his name, but cool gold and black armor and a full helmet with all sorts of ranging equipment. Like the smartball thing from Shadowbeat probably.

And Hell, there's jailai joints all over Florida too. Generally close to the dog tracks.

It is Jai-Lai on 17-92 in Seminole County at the 436 (Semoran Blvd).

How does this strike everyone?

Jaialai (Exotic Ranged Weapon)

This weapon is derived from the game of the same name. Designed for stealth it makes no noise until the shot hits its target.

Firing Mode: SS
May ready AGILITY/2 additional shots with a successful AGILITY test during one Ready Weapon action.

Standard Shot
Damage: STR/2+3 (P)
AP: --
Armor used: I

Gel Shot
Damage: STR/2+3 (S)
AP: +2
Armor used: I

NOTE: I jacked up the damage because getting hit with anyting traveling over 100 mph (160 kph) will likely kill you.

Your comments and tweaks are appreciated.

I would treat the gel shot more like a standard Gel Round for DV with the increased knockdown potential.

Basically you've got 3 more balls in your offhand, and you are tossing them in one right after the other.

You do realize the natural evolution of this, right?

A cyberimplanted version. Just like cyberspurs, but rather than 3 spurs, you get the frame that slides out, and locks together.

I can completely see this including grenades, ceramic balls full of chemicals or acid, and even weird glowy energy thingies. Nifty.

Wouldn't that be some sort of Exotic Throwing Weapon, with range based on strength x some wicked multiplier that someone who knows his Jaialai may come up with?

We've been using one of these in our game for a long time now. I had the idea (fond memories of watching Jai-Alai matches in Vegas back when they had it there, and remembering just how fast and lethal those balls could be) and thought it would make a nice weapon for our STR-14 Troll whose favorite weapon is throwing rocks at things. :)

I don't know what the stats for it are, though--our GM made something up and the Troll's player doesn't use it too often so I never got a look. But given his strength and the weight of the things he could throw with it, I sure wouldn't want to be in its way!
