I seem to remember that the CAS had a bounty on Voodoo practicioners who raised zombies during and after the Shedim scare. A very cursory look through my copy of YotC didn't result in anything, so I figured I'd just ask the collective brain here at ye olde DSF. Help a guy out? How much did the CAS want for a zombie raiser?

I recall reading about the bounty but not how much it was. It should be pretty steep though, right up there with toxic mages, though I've never seen a stated bounty on them either.

My god, the more I read about the CAS, the more I want to Ghost Dance them.

Voodoo practitioners create zombies by channeling in Shedim, at least in some cases anyway. That's not any different from summoning insect spirits or going toxic. All are very dangerous entities so why not put a bounty on them to stop the practice? The bounty would not apply to Voodoo pratictioners who don't create zombies. |

Oh, I see. Really?
I was just thinking about where in SR4 anybody can create zombies if they can summon inhabitation or possession spirits. |

I'm not aware of anyone channeling shedim to create zombies, and I'm not sure where Thane got that idea. That said, your comment comes off as, I don't know, "the more I hear about the British Government the more I want to go Final Solution on them".

That might have been in SR3 too, but the bounty was meant for the dark Voodoo people who DID channel in Shedim. If I recall, it was lifted in most areas pretty quickly because most hunters didn't take the time to tell the difference between the two. The bounty was a panic measure emplaced shortly after Ghostwalker appeared and the Shedim turned up in large numbers. So, I'm not sure that the bounty would still stand on the summoners, but there could be one on the Shedim themselves, though how to prove you killed one is another matter. Still, if anyone else has more solid info on this, I'd be interested in hearing it. |

Street Magic, pg. 86 mentions that MOST world governments outlaw the practice of making zombies, and pg. 139 puts bocors/petro houngans in the dark paths.

The voudoun bounty was in Year of the Comet. pg 92.
"Until the nature of these apparent beings has been determined, the police will be enforcing restrictions on praticioners of magic and those who follow the religious system of voudoun for their own safety and the well being of the general populace. Furthermore, the CAS government is offering a :nuyen: 100,000 for the capture of anyone found to be assosciated with the summoning and control of extra-planar entities for the animation of dead bodies, be they animal or human." So, 100k for ANYONE (not just houngans) who animates corpses, and apparently this was illegal already. I'm sure it resulted in quite a few lynchings, nonetheless. |

Seeing as it's a bounty on capture, not slaughter, lynchings would not be profitable. While some of the populace may conclude that any voodooer is guilty, that would happen with or without bounty. The hard part is manufacturing the evidence so your rivals are found to be associated enough that you can get them behind wards and get a nice cash bonus. |

I'm not talking about reasonable folks, I'm talking about mobs of scared drekless mundanes, stringing up someone who merely follows the way of the lao(probably not even a magician), because obviously the government knows they're at fault for granpa Joe trying to eat junior's face last night.

The CAS outlawed Petro long before the Shedim scare. Petro Voodoo was illegal in the CAS according to Awakenings, p. 67. That book is set in 2057, several years before the first Shedim hit the scream sheets.
Interestingly, while the CAS plays itself off as fairly tolerant and democratic, the fact remains that the national religions of every single neighboring country is restricted or banned within those borders. You can get yourself shot for being a Ghost Dancer, a Nahuali, or a Houngan in CAS territory, which neatly fills the entire list of national religion of every adjacent country except the UCAS (which doesn't have a national religion). -Frank |

I'm also vaguely remembering didn't they also chuck the couple top people/leaders from the voodoo scene into prison on rather vague and spurious charges and pretty much say they were staying in for the foreseeable future?

Year of the Comet, pg 91
"The Voice of Ogoun is the loudest and best known sect calling for a united stand against this unwarranted agression. Their interim leader, Marcus Cross, had been trying to meet with various members of the CAS government until his arrest on the steps of the capital." Also, the CAS was holding all the hougouns in internment camps, according to a few posts on shadowland. Also, there is some info about how the previous Head Hougan Justin Rochefort was killed before he could claim the talon clippings left him by the big D. Some speculation exists as to whether it was the CAS, Azzies, or a rival Hougoun faction. |

Probably a rival Houngan faction, as IMHO the "Head Houngan" was a ruse by Dunkelzahn to have these people fighting against each other.
As far as I know, there's nothing like a hierarchy among practitioners of Voodoo. Cheers, Max |

Thane, the problem was the perception that the Voodouns were using the shedim, when in fact the followers of voodoo hate the shedim. Followers of Ghede were working against the Shedim. So they were doubly fucked.
And it isn't the Petro that are the problem. Petro is more of a border line. Rada (sp?) are your standard, where Petro is more walking the line, and then the Red Eye are the human sacrifice type really nastys. |

Which was obviously the whole point of the affair. Well that or Dunk wanted them distracted and looking inward so they couldn't notice or become involved in something. Now the question becomes, who had the most to gain from this and who had the most to lose by it? |

Other than finding a shedim and dangling a corpse in front of it like a worm on a hook, were there any other cannon methods for making Uncle Fester walk again?

Quickened "animate" spell.
